From the Pharos Archives: Euripides in Modern Europe.
This is the second installment of ‘From the Pharos Archives’, where our editorial secretary dives into the to bring you hidden treasures that deserve the spotlight.
In 2009, the NIA hosted an international conference on the role of classics in the formation of European and National Identities, centering around the work of Greek tragedian Euripides (ca. 480-406 BCE). Its proceedings were subsequently published in Pharos 17(1), the first Pharos to be published with current publisher Peeters. The volume contains contributions in English, German, and French about such far-flung topics such as the rediscovery of Euripides in France in the 16th century, German-language reception of Euripides through the lens of Friedrich Schiller’s “Die Braut von Messina” and even the role of Greek theatre in China in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Curious about the role of Euripides in Modern Europe and beyond? You can find it fully available open access via https://poj.peeters-leuven.be/content.php?url=issue&journal_code=PHA&issue=1&vol=17

Documentary and Multimodal Ethnographic Approaches
Applicants: Outstanding last year BA, Master & PhD students in Social/Political Sciences & Fine Arts
ATTENTION DEADLINE 24 MAY
The Netherlands Institute at Athens (NIA) in collaboration with staff from the University of Leiden & Free University Amsterdam (VU) present the international 2024 Summer School:
Specializations and courses on audiovisual and multimodal methodologies have become widely available in recent years. This process has transformed cultural anthropology and its relationship with other disciplines, forms of expression, visual and fine arts. The students will be offered the opportunity to learn various available methodological tools and up-to-date theoretical approaches. As this course is a research-based school, students will also produce small collaborative projects that will be presented at the Netherlands Institute at Athens and various venues in the Netherlands. Possible assignments include media projects such as documentary films, photo-essays, web documentaries, transmedia narratives, social media open fieldnotes, podcasts, vlogs, media-walks, installations, graffiti etc.
This course is the ideal starting point for all students who would like to combine anthropological fieldwork with audio and video making, multimodal methodology and ethnographic documentary. Our aim is to provide a basis for new and developing ethnographic skills, introduce our students to Athenian cityscapes to develop new projects and offer all the support, supervision and knowledge needed.
By bringing together experienced academic staff and long-standing university collaborations, the summer school, carries on the tradition of the NIA in promoting cutting-edge scholarship and building a student community for those who would like to continue their studies in these fields. Finally, the students are offered free accommodation in the historic neoclassical building of the institute next to the Acropolis of Athens, in one of the most vibrant parts of the city, in the areas of Koukaki/Plaka.

Visit of post-graduate students of Law School of NKUA
On Tuesday 2nd of April 2024, we had the pleasure of a group of post-graduate students from Law of School of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens visiting us. NIA’s Librarian, Ms. Sotiria Nikolou, gave the students a tour through the Institute and the Library’s studying rooms. She told them about the history of the Institute and the Library. Furthermore, she informed them about the Library’s material, the ‘Troianos Collection’ and the new series of lectures entitled ‘Byzantine Talks NIA’ that will start on May 2024.
The tour was followed by the regular class, but instead of attending it in their usual campus classroom, the professors preferred to do it at the premises of the NIA. The students really enjoyed it so much that they want to repeat it!
We want to thank professors Mrs. Eleftheria Papagianni and Mr. Marios Tantalos for the collaboration and for having chosen premises of the Institute for their course!

The Institute
Six Dutch universities co-operate to make the NIA possible: The Universities of Amsterdam, Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht, Nijmegen and the VU University Amsterdam. What they ask us to do is to be a bridge between the Dutch and the Greek academic world and enable our scholars and students to pursue their studies in Greece.
As one of the seventeen foreign "archaeological" schools in Athens, the NIA enables Dutch teams to conduct archaeological research in Greece. But the activities of the NIA are not limited to archaeology. In our historic building at Makri 11, at the foot of the Akropolis, we organize courses about such diverse subjects as migration, visual ethnography, the archaeology and anthropology of death, epigraphy, the Modern Greek language, cultural heritage and Byzantine pottery. In our library, we offer lectures and conferences on a broad spectrum of subjects pertaining to Greece.
Our building comprises six guest rooms for students and scholars, and we offer grants to give students the opportunity to enrich their research and education with a stay in Athens. We a also give advise to Greek students wanting to study in the Netherlands.
