Meet the women behind the design of Mondrian Hong Kong and Carna by Dario Cecchini: Karin Krautgartner and Joyce Wang.

Karin, Founder and Creative Director of Amsterdam-based interior design studio byKK, took inspiration of the rich history of Hong Kong and turned traditional elements into bold contemporary spaces. As the hotel's lead interior designer, Karin brings to life Hong Kong’s underwater imaginative world onto our walls and interiors, showcasing whimsical sea creatures, waves and ripples, as if gliding through magical reefs and water. Through Karin's vivid imagination, guests are treated to her take on fluid experiences and the appreciation of light, water and formations where new dimensions are revealed. Her passion for nautical accents and stimulating experiences is evident in the hotel's courageous design choices, reflecting her ability to combine space and shapes with seemingly effortless ease.

Joyce Wang, Founder and Interior Designer for Joyce Wang Studio based in London and Hong Kong, created the interiors for Carna Hong Kong, the hotel's flagship Italian steakhouse. Inspired by the renaissance period and old-world Italian family glamour, Carna's inviting space is home to a vibrant and immersive dining experience. Its celestial ambiance, crowned with marble ceilings, stained glass walls mirroring ancient wall frescoes, and velvet tapestries framing the windows and seating, provides the perfect backdrop for celebrating Italian hospitality. Joyce's innovative use of lighting emits hues of bronze, copper, blush pinks and teals to enhance the mood. The use of limestone, Roman vein-cut travertine, and Amarone burgundy marble further enriches the space, evoking the spirit of Italy and Tuscany within the heart of Hong Kong.

It’s clean, it’s seamless, but it’s also, pardon my French, boring as hell. Thankfully, the rooms at Mondrian Kong eschew Singaporeans’ bland love for “wabi-sabi” and “Scandi-anything”, opting instead for bold and unabashed hues. "
