Did you know that almost every horse develops a fever after Equine Influenza vaccination? Surprisingly, this is not reported in the literature or on product data sheets. Real-time continuous temperature monitoring offers tremendous advantages for detecting subtle fevers in horses.
‘Dips’ in horse temperature charts are not uncommon, and are usually easy to explain. The pattern below, however, was one we had not encountered before. In this case the sensor was attached to a 3YO filly in a racing stable - at 7am on the 18th December the stable took her for a swim! Great to see the sensor remained attached and kept functioning after an early morning dip in the chilly water 🐎🌡️🤿🤣
Fascinating temperature chart demonstrating a transient fever in a horse several hours after vaccination. Temperature readings recorded every 5 minutes using the VetTrue™ System from Epona Biotec Ltd.
The main reason infrared thermometers aren't an accurate way of measuring body temperature is because of the insulating property of horse hair. The VetTrue™ System from Epona Biotec Ltd measures cutaneous body temperature on the underside of the horse's tail. At this location temperature measurements have a strong correlation to re**al temperature measurements. This is the same principle as taking an underarm temperature measurement from a person!
Infrared thermometers less accurate at detecting fever, study finds - Horsetalk.co.nz Non-contact infrared thermometers have been considered as an alternative to re**al temperature taking, but their readings may not closely reflect the core body temperature in horses, researchers say.
Congratulations to Researchers at the Gluck Equine Research Centre and Waltham Petcare Science Institute on the publication of this paper in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science. Great to see Epona Biotec Ltd VetTrue™ Temperature monitoring system being used in scientific research to better understand stress in horses during transportation.

Monitoring a horse's temperature during transport is of paramount importance to ensure the animal's well-being and prevent potential health risks. Horses are sensitive creatures, and the stress associated with transportation can lead to various physiological challenges. Temperature monitoring serves as a crucial tool in safeguarding their health throughout the journey.
Transportation, especially over long distances, exposes horses to various stressors such as changes in temperature, humidity, and air quality. These stressors can contribute to dehydration, respiratory issues, and even heatstroke. Monitoring the horse's temperature helps to identify any abnormal fluctuations that might indicate distress. An elevated body temperature can signal dehydration, overheating, or the onset of illness.
Furthermore, horses are particularly prone to a condition known as shipping fever when they are transported in crowded and confined spaces. Increased stress levels during transport can weaken their immune systems, making them more susceptible to respiratory infections. Regular temperature checks can help detect early signs of fever, allowing prompt intervention and medical attention to prevent the condition from worsening.

Equine Pre-Purchase Examinations: 24 Hour Temperature Monitoring
This Two-Year-Old Thoroughbred gelding by the sire 'Time Test' underwent a 5-Stage pre-purchase examination for racing in Hong Kong. As part of the examination his temperature was monitored overnight using the VetTrue™ System from Epona Biotec. The temperature chart clearly shows a normal temperature pattern overnight. This is confirmation at a glance that the gelding is in good health. The sharp dip in the chart at exactly 7:30am corresponds to the gelding galloping at the racecourse. The dip occurs because the tail rises during exercise affecting the temperature data which is collected beneath this location. Once back in the stable the temperature data returns to normal, although as can be seen on the chart, slightly higher as the horse has now warmed up after exercise.

A well written article by Christa Lesté-Lasserre and a great initiative by the FEI. The VetTrue™ Temperature Monitoring System from Epona Biotec Ltd was developed to improve the heath and welfare monitoring of horses. The system has many uses, such as pre-competition temperature screening, however it excels in the early detection of Shipping Fever which is a major welfare issue in horses. Epona Biotec's vision is for real-time temperature monitoring to become a standard operating procedure for all horses travelling over 10 hours. This is a practical and economic way to improve the welfare of horses through the early detection of this potentially deadly condition.

A fever is usually the first indication a horse has contracted an infectious disease. If you can identify this and isolate the horse you have a good chance of preventing an infectious disease outbreak. Epona Biotec Ltd recommends placing a TailTab temperature sensor on all horses returning from competition. This is an extremely sensitive way of detecting a pyrexic horse.
