Happy International Flamingo Day!

As many of Jaa Bar’s friends, family and fans know - we have a penchant for flamingos as you’ll find a few of these striking and elegant feathered friends around our speakeasy.

In celebration we have created a flamboyantly zingy cocktail consisting of vodka, fresh rhubarb coulis, Rhuby Rhubarb Liqueur, a squeeze of fresh lemon and a dash of sugar syrup all shaken with ice and served in a rocks glass garnished with a sprig of mint and a cute flamingo gummy… and it’s absolutely yummy!

Fun Facts about Flamingos…

1. The word ‘flamingo’ comes from the Latin and Spanish for ‘fire’ referring of course to their bright pink feathers.

2. The backward bending knee of a flamingo isn’t a knee at all, it’s actually its ankle. Its knee is much higher and hidden underneath its feathers.

3. A group of Flamingos is called a Flamboyance!

What is World Gin Day?
Simple, it’s a day for everyone and anyone (over the legal drinking age of course…!) to celebrate and enjoy gin! Whether you’re already a fan of the juniper spirit, or looking for an intro, World Gin Day is the perfect opportunity to get involved.

Jaa Bar has a selection of Gins and Gin-based cocktails - and on special this evening we have the classic Gibson Cocktail we are calling the "Double G" at HK$98 all night!

The Gibson is made with gin and dry vermouth and garnished with a pickled onion—not an olive, nor a lemon twist. It’s only a Gibson when that savoury onion adorns the glass, adding its umami undertone to the classic cocktail.

The origin behind this drink isn’t entirely clear, but it’s possible that the Gibson was created by San Francisco businessman Walter D.K. Gibson in the late 1800s at the Bohemian Club.

BELVEDERE – DID YOU KNOW…?

The distillers of this fine beverage are located in Warsaw, Poland and are reputed for their creation of the finest vodka in the world. Belvedere means “beautiful to see.” It is also the name of one of Poland’s most historic landmarks, the Presidential Palace.

The distillers have steadfastly followed the distilling traditions for handcrafting vodka from 100% Polish rye. They follow the process of distilling it four times in a system that has been handed down from generation to generation for 600 years. The distillery was established in 1910.

At Jaa Bar we have a multitude of options to serve up this premier vodka… why not try a martini? We make them as dry as our humour!

Amaretto originated in Saronno, Italy, a town in Lombardy, in the province of Varese. Legend has it that in 1525, artist Bernardino Luini, a student of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned by a church in Saronno to paint frescoes on their sanctuary. Luini needed a model to help him paint the Madonna. A local young widow agreed to pose for him, and they soon fell in love. As a token of her love, she made him a batch of liqueur made from apricot pits steeped in brandy.

The name Amaretto literally translates as “little bitter” and comes from mandorla amara, or bitter almond, which is its primary flavour. Despite its name, Amaretto is sweet and smooth, and stands on its own easily.

A total lunar eclipse is taking tonight and will be visible in Hong Kong… this celestial phenomenon begins before moonrise at 6:56 pm and the total eclipse phase kicking in at 7:11 pm when the moon enters the Earth's shadow completely with the peak occurring at 7:19 pm. The whole eclipse will last for about 15 minutes. . As the eclipse coincides with the Super Moon, the biggest full moon of the year, you can expect the diameter of the moon to be about seven per cent larger than the ordinary full moon!

It is strongly advised that all celestial celebrations, that include Total Eclipses of the Heart are best washed down with a heavenly cocktail… and Jaa Bar has the best cocktails for this purpose… of course!
