BARLOW ENGLISH

Native English teacher (British,) with over ten years of teaching experience in schools, language centers, private tutoring, in-person and online.

Now back in Hong Kong and with Covid cases dropping, in-person classes are once again available (Hong Kong only.) All new students will be given a basic assessment, free of charge, to ascertain strengths and weaknesses which will then be used to help direct the classes to maximise improvement. Private English tuition classes, from as little as $150/hr.*
Classes are available in-person or online. P

*NOTICE* I've decided to shut down the Barlow English website and focus more on social media. The traffic I get from it isn't worth the rising costs. I'll also lose access to my email: [email protected], so please transition to: [email protected]. Thank you.

With vast experience in Blender, Renpy, and now Roblox, Unity, and Unreal Engine, as well as computers in general, I'm pleased to offer capable students guidance and training on creative computing projects of their own choosing, providing them with real skills they can take into the classroom and workplace. In September, K3 students will need to start getting ready for their Primary School interviews. As both an in-school teacher and home tutor, and an experienced online teacher, I'm well-prepared to help nervous students shine through their interviews.

I've often been annoyed by Hong Kong secondary schools teaching students to write well over the word count for essays, as this is the opposite protocol at university level, where it's 10% under or over, maximum. Form 5 students going into Form 6 in September will now have included an academic writing curriculum to prepare them for writing and editing essays at university level.

If any of my students, or anyone at all, is the victim of bullying, remember this: They don't attack you because there's something wrong with you, they attack you because there's something wrong with them.
I'm always ready to listen and hear you if you need to talk.

Pronunciation is important. At best it can change the meaning of a word. At worst it can make you look foolish.

Strong phonetic knowledge is required. Link in comments.

To all my students who achieved 90%+ in their English exams, well done. One student sent me a message thanking me and saying it was all thanks to me that he got a high score. That's lovely, but as I told him, it's a team effort. I might be steering, but he's the one doing the work.

Happy Mid-autumn Festival to all my Chinese friends, students, and family in Hong Kong!

18/09/2023

The Hong Kong Annual Speech Festival is coming up, and this year it's not video submission! Remember:
1 - Slow down! You'll be nervous on-stage and that will cause you to speed through your reading. DON'T. Slow down, and pace yourself.
2 - Rhythm. English has a steady rhythm like a drum. Use pauses and gaps to emphasise and punctuate clauses.
3 - Tone. English rises and falls along with its rhythm, like a flowing river.
4 - Volume. Be mindful especially when your tone drops that you maintain the same consistent volume—not too quiet, not too loud.
5 - Clarity. Annunciate clearly, pronounce each phoneme clearly, using wide and open mouth positions when necessary.

6 - Practrise, practise, practise! The best thing is to do it in a mirror so you can also see your body language and expression, it is after all, a performance! Also record yourself doing your reading and listen to it, consider how it will sound in a crowded auditorium.

Finally, enjoy it! Performing arts is a fun experience and everyone gets nervous, so don't worry about it too much. I used to be a singer in a rock band and I was always nervous before a show!

Students can improve online learning with typing skills. It will also serve them in the future if they want to take advanced English exams like IELTS or C1/C2 Proficiency, as they're computer-based and will not allow tablets with auto-correct.

If you've messaged me, please ensure that you're able to receive messages back.

Here's an update on current scheduling and fees:

I currently only have space on Monday, and Thursday afternoons. I charge $300/hour or $150/hour if more than one student in a group. Initially I conduct a free assessment to find a student's strengths and weaknesses. For Primary students I usually blend several materials from Cambridge English to practise the four key language skills plus grammar, but also lean more into writing, grammar, and oral skills as the student requires. Please be aware that I'm currently out of Hong Kong and so only offer online classes at the moment, via Zoom/Skype etc.
Best regards, Mr Paul.
