Smart cities 🏢📱👍

What is a smart city?

We hear all the time that technology changes our lives, including our environment. The developments not only improve the life of
individuals, but benefit the whole society as well, such as smart city initiatives. A well-known example is Rio de Janeiro, that won
the ’World Smart City Award’ in 2013 for services like Digital Traffic (monitoring the main routes’ traffic in real time), integration of
agencies and utilities, MonitorAr-Rio (for air quality improvement) and the enhancement of the municipal guard system. Smart city
systems might include green energy management, transportation and building optimization as well as security related innovations.
These methods require a city-wide system of smart devices to start with, but also an understanding and collaborating society.
These initiatives could improve the quality of life but have their drawbacks as well.

Step into a smart city!

Join to our Smart Cities section, where we will overview the history and the notion of the term smart city, and get an understanding of the technological background of such systems, We will get an insight into four major subsystems of smart cities: education, mobility, e-governance and healthcare. Of course, technical developments of such volume pose several ethical questions like digital exclusion or surveillance.
At the end of the sections we will investigate these potencial drawbacks and futher possibilites with the analysis of movies or tv series chosen by the participants.

For futher details watch our video below or check our website here: http://cec.rajk.eu/smart-cities/!

One more thing!

We extended our registration deadline till the 24th of May!
So take your time ... but don't wait too long!

💻MACHINE LEARNING💻

Why should you apply?
The terms Deep Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (ML) became buzzwords in the past 10 years but only a few have solid grasp of the concepts behind it. In several news and articles, they are mistakenly used interchangeably however they have different meaning and assumes different knowledge for the users to deeply understand their methods. ML techniques were originally used in different fields of academia but quickly became a powerful tool for companies to improve business, provide for better customer experience and generate operational efficiencies. This section is designed to introduce participants to basic ML techniques and provide them with useful insights into how companies capitalize on them.

Why should you participate?
In a nutshell: you’ll have a very exciting vacation in Budapest, where you’ll get to explore the city while uncovering the future of Business with excellent presenters and fellow students.

Don’t miss out on your chance to participate in one of Europe’s greatest summer schools. Don’t wait too long, REGISTER NOW!

CYBER DIPLOMACY📡👀

The premise of the section would be Ben Buchanan’s theory called the “Cybersecurity dilemma”, which looks at Technology as a new type of weapon at a country’s disposal for both intelligence and counter-intelligence purposes. With new types of technologies emerging, certain superpowers now have the ability to interfere in other countries’ domestic affairs. This forces superpowers to adopt new strategies. During our week-long course we would like to go through the cases of all countries relevant to the “Cybersecurity dilemma” theory, countries like Russia, China, the USA or UK. Furthermore, we would like study other relevant non-state actors, such as Facebook whose platform is regularly used for cyber-warfare.

• How can countries resolve the issue of creating a supranational legal system to efficiently address cybersecurity issues while at the same time respecting each nation’s sovereignty?
• What kind of controversies can be found in the comparison of the cyber-diplomatic strategies of the USA and Russia?
• What could be the drawbacks of the so called “naming and shaming” of certain countries?

The four-day-long course would take a block seminar format, where invited professors and experts would give talks and facilitate discussions in order to advance the participants’ knowledge on this topic. We would like to ask the participants to get somewhat familiar with their country’s (or regions) cybersecurity measures in place in preceding the summer university. Region and country specific knowledge will serve as a good basis for discussions and debates throughout the conference. The final stage of the course will consist of a simulation where students will have the chance to apply their acquired theoretical knowledge in scenarios mimicking real life events of cyber alerts and emergency responces.

Don’t miss out on your chance to participate in one of Europe’s greatest summer schools. Don’t wait too long, REGISTER NOW!

Besides Rajk College, the CEC 2017 takes place at Andrássy Universität Budapest as well. This young university puts the focus on European integration with a main topic of Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Danube region. Goals of the university are the development and advancement of experts on Europe as well as interdisciplinarity in instruction and research.

In intensive master's and doctoral programmes, topics of European integration are analysed and conveyed – and Europe experienced at the same time. The disciplines represented – history, law, political science and economics – work closely together. “The fundamental question of our time is whether the west has the will to survive.” - asked Donald Trump yesterday in Warsaw. To that we received an answer from professor Ignatieff. Thank you again for the inspiring lecture!

"‘Live dangerously’ is what I say to students. Students who come to CEU will not have one career for the rest of their lives. They may have four or five or six. And the challenge for us is to educate them so they are at ease with this idea. They are excited about it, not frightened by it. The line out there is that the world is a terrible place, there aren’t any jobs and so on, but it is wrong. You’ve got to find your place and fight for it. And you’ve got to take risks.

We have an opportunity to rethink graduate education for the 21st century. Right across the fields, the one skill we all need is to know what knowledge is. To be able to have respect for knowledge and understand why it differs from opinion, and to learn that knowledge is the basis of all judgment. And this is what universities do. We don’t change the world, we turn out people who know what knowledge is and then they will use it to change the world."

We are honored to have Michael Ignatieff, president and rector of Central European University open the 11th CEC today. He will present us his vision on the Future of the Western World.

We are most delighted to welcome both international and Hungarian participants and lecturers throughout the course of the conference!

1/2
"What am I most proud of? Living dangerously, not having my life driven by fear. Nobody knows what future we’re going into. When I graduated from college in the dinosaur age, I wouldn’t have believed that I would be running a university in Budapest one day. That’s life. We have to have an education that makes people unafraid of the future and ready for whatever the future holds. See things as opportunities, not as threats. Fear has the most terrible effect on human life: it divides people from each other and prevents them from realizing their potential."
