In this literature review, carried out by Eötvös Loránd University, we aim to introduce relevant literature on the adaptation of international students and intercultural competence.
Chapter 1 provides a background on international students and discusses the necessity of pre-mobility preparation and post-mobility intervention.
Chapter 2 introduces the literature on acculturation and the adaptation of international students, including their experiences upon returning home after studying abroad. This chapter explores the processes and factors that influence their mobility outcomes across various domains, laying the groundwork for understanding the role of intercultural competence.
Chapter 3 focuses on intercultural competence, examining its components, main theoretical frameworks, development, measurements, and programs aimed at promoting its development among international students.
Chapter 4 presents recommendations for planning and implementing intercultural interventions based on our literature review.

Faranak Gholampour, former student of IIPE, at ELTE PPK was back to Budapest in the end of March, 2024 to submit her Doctoral thesis as titled as 'From Iran to Europe: Investigating the Motivations for Leaving and Seeking Asylum among Iranian Irregular Migrants' on the main trends of irregular migration arriving from Iran to Europe. Faranak together with her supervisor, Borbála Simonovits published already part of her thesis in the journal of Borderland Studies https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08865655.2021.2013296 and two further publications based on her dissertation are in the pipeline as well.
Borbála Takács, a doctoral student at the ELTE PPK Doctoral School of Psychology and alumna of ELTE PPK Institute of Intercultural Psychology and Education, Social Integration Studies MA, received the Dr. Mónika Szabó Award on 25 March 2024. Congratulations on the award!
Bori's work is closely linked to the intellectual legacy of Dr. Mónika Szabó. After completing her MA degree, as a continuation of her experimental research, she and her colleagues founded the Kacsakő Association (https://kacsakoegyesulet.hu/). The association's main goal is to create a safe and inclusive environment for children coming from different social "bubbles" to meet and learn from and about each other. Bori's main research topic is related to this programme as well: she is investigating how sport and experiential education can contribute to prejudice reduction on the field.
About the award:
In 2021, the faculty, researchers and staff of the Institute of Intercultural Psychology and Pedagogy at ELTE PPK established the Dr Mónika Szabó Award in memory of Mónika Szabó, who passed away on 3 March 2020 after a serious illness, on the first anniversary of her death. The award is intended to honour an outstanding university student or an activist in the field of social inclusion and gender equality, in memory and remembrance of the eponymous person and her work.

Social trust, participation, and perceived risks associated with shared mobility services. How to promote participation in shared mobility services in Hungary?
Research Leaders: Dr. Borbála Simonovits, Habil. Associate Professor of Intercultural Psychology and Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), and Prof. Csaba Csiszár, Professor at the Department of Transportation Technology and Transportation Economics, Faculty of Transportation Engineering and Vehicle Engineering, Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME).
The main question of the research is how to promote participation in shared mobility services. The goal is to develop a framework considering psychological, sociological, and transportation perspectives. The framework includes situational analysis, service planning, and impact analysis.
In cooperation with the ELTE Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology and the BME Faculty of Transport Engineering, attitudes and demand for shared services will be assessed and modelled, taking into account attitudes and mobility patterns. Based on these empirical results and collaboration with relevant shared mobility stakeholders and municipalities during the research, an improvement in service quality and an increase in willingness to use the services are expected from the research project.
The research is being conducted within the framework of the OTKA Research Grant (Project ID: K-147169) financed by the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund.
Project Duration: January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2027.
