For our ninth feature of the Members Achievement series, we caught up last week with the Chief Digital Officer of Allo Bank (IDX: BBHI). Sajal Bhatnagar has played a key role in rapidly growing the Indonesian digital bank: revenue in 2023 was up by 65.2% and profit by 64.6% vs. the previous year.

Since Sajal has lived in Jakarta since May 2022, our conversations were in English and Bahasa Indonesia, which pleasantly surprised the author. This polyglot also speaks Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. Sajal also shared how he experienced a steep learning curve since the Indonesian banking industry is well-regulated, for good reasons. He is indeed a true believer in democratizing the financial services industry for all Indonesians and for that, we salute you!

Going back to his school days, Sajal studied at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad and the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Both renowned schools are extremely competitive and only around 1% are accepted from the hundreds of thousand applicants. During his IIM days, Sajal received numerous awards and scholarships to prove his mettle: T.T. Krishnamachari Prize, Balmer Lawrie Award, OPJEM scholarship, and the DAAD program in Germany to name a few.

After brief stints in Morgan Stanley in London and Accenture in New Delhi, Sajal found his calling when he joined Paytm, the largest fintech start-up in India. His proudest achievement there was when he helped launched the Paytm Soundbox, a revolutionary payments device that has enormous impact on the SMEs of India. As of today, >10 million Soundboxes have been sold. Sajal’s last position within the Paytm world was the Chief Business Officer of the Paytm Payments Bank, a company that became profitable under his care.

For fun, Sajal likes football, reading, and video games with the God of War as his favourite game. Also, the best Indian restaurant in Indonesia in his humble opinion is Handi by Brasserie at the Le Méridien Jakarta. Sajal’s parting words to Mensans: “Being smart doesn’t mean that you always must solve all problems. Being smart sometimes mean that you don’t have to.”

On the 27th of July 2024, Mensa Indonesia and YouthDozer collaborated in hosting the “Unlocking Youth Potential: Empowering the Next Generation through Intelligence & Healthy Lifestyle” event in NutriHub Serpong.

Mensa Indonesia was proudly represented by 3 of our members who shared their knowledge to the audience: Marcellino Indrawan, FCCA, Daniel Purwandi, and Radita Sonix.

In a collaborative effort to prepare Indonesian youth for the future, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenpora) and Mensa Indonesia hosted an enlightening talk show titled “Navigating Tomorrow: Key Skills for Indonesians in the AI Era.” This event, part of the “Klub Berkawan” (Klub Bersama Cendekiawan) program, took place at the Media Center, Wisma Kemenpora, Jakarta, and brought together some of Indonesia’s brightest minds to discuss the essential skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world.

This event marked the third collaboration between Mensa Indonesia and Kemenpora. Our previous joint efforts included a talk show supporting the manufacturing sector and an Instagram Live session introducing Mensa to a broader online audience.

The talk show featured four distinguished speakers, each an expert in their field, who shared their insights and experiences. Three of the four speakers, Radita Sonix, Ray Frederick, and Thor Yumna, are members of Mensa Indonesia, a high IQ society that is part of Mensa International. Their membership underscores their intellectual prowess and commitment to lifelong learning.

This collaboration with Mensa Indonesia was made possible through Mensa’s “1 Hari Bersama Mensa” (One Day with Mensa) program, which offers pro-bono expert speakers to share their knowledge and industry insights with the broader community.

The event successfully provided valuable insights into the future of work, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in an AI-dominated era. Kemenpora and Mensa Indonesia look forward to organizing more such events to inspire and educate Indonesia’s youth.

Exclusive event for Mensans and their guests!

In collaboration with the Noble Academy, Mensa Indonesia will be jointly hosting a discussion on the recently released “Apakah saya juga gifted?” book next Saturday (Aug 10th).

We are pleased to have the author herself, Bu Nancy Dinar, to participate in this interactive session. Stavin Deeswe will be the moderator for this book talk, followed by the “Building CV and Career” M-Chat by the Chairperson of Mensa Indonesia, Satriadi Gunawan.

On the 3rd of August 2024, Mensa Indonesia celebrated the next chapter of the Friends of Mensa Indonesia (FoMI) program.

As of today, we can proudly share that Dr. Jacky Mussry is now a Friend of Mensa Indonesia. He is a renowned marketing expert that currently serves as CEO of MARKPLUS CORP., a leading Southeast Asian professional services firm that serves companies and individuals in the areas of consulting, marketing research, education and media community since 1990.

In addition to his work as a consultant, Jacky is also a co-author of the book Entrepreneurial Marketing and a lecturer at the School of Business and Management (SBM) of Institut Teknologi Bandung and University of Indonesia.

During today’s event, Mensa Indonesia was delighted to renew our partnership with Mischka and Devon, the first Friends of Mensa Indonesia. The siblings have won more than 100 medals in math and science Olympiads, both at the national and the international levels. Their achievements reflect the high intellectual abilities and extraordinary talents of Indonesia’s young generation.

The FoMI program, launched by Mensa Indonesia in 2023, is designed to show appreciations to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated intelligence and positive contributions in their respective fields. In addition, the FoMI’s are also expected to become ambassadors for Mensa Indonesia in introducing the importance of intellectual intelligence to a wider community.

For our 8th profile of the 2024 Members Achievement series, we caught up with one of our patriarchs, Pak Ariadi Satyaputra. A Mensan since 1991, he is now serving as our Ombudsman and frequently, our event venue host.

Born Yap Ci Kiat in Sukabumi back in 1955, Pak Ariadi has experienced the ups and downs of Indonesia as a second-generation immigrant. After the 1965-1966 political crisis, he was left out of school for 2 years when Chung Hwa Sukabumi school was suddenly ordered to close by the new government. Nevertheless, Pak Ariadi’s determination led him to obtain a Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universitas Trisakti in 1982. One of his proudest moments in life was when he finally became an Indonesian citizen after 2 years of naturalization process.

After a brief stint working in Guna Elektro during college, Pak Ariadi started his 35-year tenure with PT Jabar Mulia Engineering (JME) in 1986, eventually becoming the President Director of the company in the early 2000’s. JME is primarily involved in Textile and Synthetic Fiber industries and represents some of the world’s leading textile engineering and machinery manufacturers from Europe and the USA. As the Indonesian subsidiary of Tri-Union Group, Pak Ariadi worked closely with the Chuang and the Kao families of Hong Kong. In 2021, he eventually passed the leadership torch to Pak Tony Teluk Giat, his partner of 30 years at JME.

Upon retiring at the age of 66, Pak Ariadi has been enjoying life without financial stress due to the wise decisions he made early in 1983: passive income streams! In addition to financial securities that he has held for decades, Pak Ariadi currently owns 8 residences that are mostly being rented out. He is also a proud owner of Inul Vizta family karaoke Thamrin (now in Menara Cakrawala) when he teamed up with several acquaintances back in 2008. They are now friends for life due to this unique partnership. Pak Ariadi’s message to all Mensans: “If there’s an opportunity in front of you, be bold and do it!”

Ilusi tentang market value maupun market validation memang umum yah kalau dalam networking kerja atau bisnis, tapi kalau dalam hubungan personal lebih jarang terdengar nih. Menurut netizen, bikin ilusi semacam itu dalam hubungan personal termasuk manipulatif atau strategis nih?

On the 6th of July 2024, Mensa Indonesia held its first ever MENSA Kids event in collaboration with SIG MAGE: board game day!!!

This event was intended to nurture our growing community of gifted children and their respective parents. We hope such interactions will further enhance their critical thinking and communication skills.

FYI: SIG stands for Special Interest Group. Meanwhile, MAGE means Movie Anime Game Enthusiast. SIG MAGE is one of our most active SIGs, along with SIG Culinary and SIG Money Making.

For our seventh Members Achievement profile, we present Nitish Adnani, our very own pediatrician. Since Aug’23, Nitish has been caring for his young patients in RSPI Bintaro Jaya (part of the Rumah Sakit Pondok Indah Group).

Growing up as a 3rd generation Indian-Indonesian, Nitish was expected to join the family’s textile business. However, his passion led him to pursue a double degree in medicine from University of Indonesia and the University of Melbourne, becoming the first medical doctor in the Adnani family. After a year-long internship in RSUD Koja and Puskesmas Kemayoran, Nitish ended up assisting Professor Dr. dr. Pustika Amalia Wahidiyat, SpA(K), a renowned pediatric hematologist-oncologist in RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo. She was the inspiration for Nitish to pursue further studies and become a pediatrician, especially by the way she treated her patients like family.

His thirst of knowledge eventually motivated him to obtain a Master of Science in Paediatrics and Child Health from UCL. During his study in the UK, there were temptations to continue his career there. However, the calling to return back to Indonesia ultimately prevailed and Nitish enrolled in the Pediatric Specialty Training program at Universitas Indonesia. Throughout his studies, Nitish had many mentors, one that stood out for him was dr. Alatas Fatima Safira, SpA(K), Ph.D, who he felt really embodied the personality of a genuine pediatrician and leader.

Nitish’s higher studies were marked by several major achievements, including receiving the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Medical Science from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences of the University of Melbourne, as well as the Prof. Sofyan Ismael Award in 2023 for Outstanding Achievement in the Pediatric National Board Examination from the Indonesian College of Pediatrics.
