What do you think this 1945 sculpture represents?

Crafted by the artist I Nyoman Nuarta, this compact yet impactful sculpture represents a captivating ambiguity—it could portray either a duet or a single figure captured in two poses, reminiscent of a double-exposed photograph. Within the swirling bronze, two female figures elegantly dance together, evoking a sense of spontaneous motion akin to a blurred photograph, a feat that poses technical challenges in this medium (bronze and stone). Notice how the dynamic movements are reflected in the flowing hair and billowing dresses of the dancers, further enhancing the sculpture’s allure.

I Nyoman Nuarta, an Indonesian sculptor renowned for his large-scale public artworks, gained global recognition for monumental pieces such as the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) statue in Bali, Indonesia—one of the world’s tallest statues. His creations often depict themes from Indonesian culture and history, showcasing his mastery in seamlessly blending traditional and modern artistic techniques. His other masterpieces includes the Fatmawati Soekarno Statue, the Jalesveva Jayamahe Monument (Surabaya), and the Indonesian Proclamation Monument (Jakarta).

Today, we honor Hendra Gunawan, an Indonesian maestro whose impact extends beyond the realm of art, influencing culture and politics alike.

Renowned for his dynamic paintings, Gunawan’s art vividly captured the essence of Indonesian life, pulsating with vibrant colors and spirited compositions.

Yet, this self-taught artist’s impact extended far beyond the canvas.

Gunawan was a fervent advocate for Indonesian people’s rights and democracy under the rule of President Soekarno, even if it meant affiliating with politically charged left-winged art groups. His activism led to his imprisonment for 13 years during the nation’s struggle against colonial rule.

Despite adversity, his commitment to artistic expression and national liberation persevered, solidifying him as a pivotal figure in Indonesian art history and a beacon of resilience and creativity.

⮕ This photograph depicts Hendra Gunawan standing before his 1981 masterpiece, “Going to the Market (Pergi ke Pasar),” which is exhibited at the Neka Art Museum (NAM).

Luh Komang, the third-born Balinese woman, exudes charm in her lace kebaya and frangipani-adorned gelung, ready for the playful joged dance. Positioned against a dark backdrop, she stands amidst offerings placed on a shrine, shaded by a parasol. The restrained color scheme creates a striking contrast, directing the viewer’s gaze towards the dancer depicted in a realist portrait technique.

Guess how many people created this 1990 painting?

Crafted with fervor and unity, “Long Live Indonesia (Dirgahayu Indonesia)” stands as a testament to collective artistry by seven Balinese contemporary artists who were members of the Sanggar Dewata Indonesia group.

To close their group exhibition at the Neka Art Museum (NAM), these seven artists seized the moment, dipping their brush into colors that echoed the emotions of the event, capturing the essence of the closing ceremony on canvas right then and there.

Furthermore, the title of this painting served as a vibrant tribute to Indonesia’s 45th independence anniversary on August 17th.

These seven artists were : I Made Budhiana , I Made Bendi Yudha, I Nyoman Wibawa, I Nyoman Erawan, I Made Sudibya, I Made Djirna, and I Made Rutha.

Among the uses for keris are a weapon to defend oneself in a battle, a magical object to ward off evil spirits and otherworldly beings, and a charm that bring good fortune.

Keris are also used in religious rituals to carry out Panca Yadnya ceremonies (Dewa, Pitra, Rsi, Manusa, and Bhuta Yadnya), an addition in certain Balinese dances, and a necessary piece of jewelry for men on special occasions - particularly traditional Balinese weddings.

Based on Balinese beliefs, Keris is a symbol of male virility or masculinity, commonly referred to as “purusa.” Thus, in Bali, keris is an essential component of a man’s formal attire, particularly for the grooms in Balinese weddings. And in situation where the groom is unable to attend the wedding ceremony, a Keris may act as a representation of the groom.

This 1975 photograph captured JMK Suteja Neka wearing formal Balinese clothing, complete with a keris behind his back. He was posing as a model for Affandi’s portrait painting of the Neka Art Museum (NAM) founder.

JMK Suteja Neka was never new to Keris as he is the descendent of the Pande blacksmiths - Pande Pan Nedeng, Pande Sedeng, and Pande Riyut - who were trusted to serve as the keris-makers and guardians in the Royal Court of Peliatan ( located in the South of Ubud) during the 19th century.

Even though JMK Suteja Neka’s has been interested in actively collecting keris since the 1970s when he owned the Neka Art Gallery ( ) , his passion to collect Keris as a permanent collection for the Keris Pavilion of the Neka Art Museum (NAM) in October 2006 after participating in the rededication ceremony of the Pura Penataran Pande temple in Ubud. The last rededication ceremony of the temple was on April 1952.

There was a new ritual added during the 2006 ceremony that differ from the 1952 ceremony - the ritual was the dagger ritual.

In this dagger ritual, male members of the Pura Penataran Pande temple took turns to ritually pound on a Keris. This activity sparks JMK Suteja Neka’s curiosity on this traditional asymmetrical dagger, in which led to his interest in preserving and sharing the beauty of Keris to the world

Do you know what these elderly men are drinking?

In this 1964 painting by Agus Djaya (1913-1994), he depicts three old men drinking after a day in the field. These old men are savouring an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of coconut sap, palm sap, or palm flower nectar - known as “Tuak”.

Drinking Tuak is not only a popular pastime for Balinese men, but also men in other parts of Indonesia. Drinking Tuak is known to be strongly associated with the native Indonesian culture, and this tradition has been around long before the Dutch colonization.

Brewed in larged earthenware jars, this beer-like beverage has a unique traditional drinking method. Tuak is customarily consumed from a cérét, a bamboo tube with a spout; the drinker tilts back his head, raises the vessel, and tilts it to so that a thin stream of liquid flows out into his open mouth.

Have you tried it before?

Entitled “Durma Meets his Mother”, this 1961 intricate drawing by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad is based on a folktale from Bali known as Rajapala. The folktale began with a handsome young hunter named Rajapala (also known as the Nutmeg King).

By chance, Rajapala stumbled upon seven celestial nymphs bathing during one of his hunts. Then he stole one of the nymph’s selendang (shawl).

Nymphs who lost their selendang (shawl) were said to be unable to return to heaven.

The name of this unfortunate nymph is Ken Sulasih.

When Ken Sulasih realized Rajapala had taken her shawl, she asked Rajapala to give it back. Rajapala agreed to return Ken Sulasih’s selendang (shawl) in exchange for consenting to marry her and bearing him a son.

Ken Sulasih complied.

A few years later, Ken Sulasih asked Rajapala to fulfill his promise to return her selendang (shawl). Rajapala unwillingly gave back her selendang (shawl), and Ken Sulasih returned back to heaven.

Heartbroken, Rajapala retired to the forest and was never seen again.

During the absence of both parents, Durma was raised by the royal family. As he grew up, Durma hoped to find his biological parents.

He encountered numerous perils as he wandered around the forest searching for his father, one of which was an ogress who wanted to marry him.

To save him, his adopted royal family dispatched soldiers.

Durma (left) and his winged nymph mother (center) were eventually reunited with divine intervention, while another youth (right) was witnessing the joyous reunion. However, Durma had never located his father till the very end.

Did you know the museum wasn’t always called the Neka Art Museum (NAM) ?

As you can see from this picture, the initial name of the museum was actually Suteja Neka Fine Art Exhibition. At the time the exhibition had only 45 collections which are mainly
fine art paintings. The name Suteja Neka Fine Art Exhibition is derived from the founder’s name JMK Suteja Neka. And the name remained until the inauguration of NAM on 7th July 1982 by the Indonesian Prime Minister of Education and Culture, Dr. Daoed Joesoef. The inauguration of the exhibition allowed JMK Suteja Neka to officially coined the exhibition as a museum. Hence, the name Neka Art Museum was established.

Dancers (1990) - Bagong Kussudiardja

In 1990, Bagong Kussudiardja painted these faceless dancers marching across his 143x295cm canvas. The dancers were dressed in traditional Balinese baris costumes (warrior or line dance). Vivid robust strokes, recurring patterns, and elevated legs in dance-like postures are used to create rhythms and dynamics within the figures. This painting reflected the artist’s passion as a long renowned Indonesian Dance Artist.

Bagong Kussudiardja (1928-2004) was an influential artist whose accomplishments and achievements can be counted as one of the cultural turning points in contemporary Indonesian post-colonial history. His family is regarded as a member of the Yogyakarta Palace's royal circle, therefore Bagong was no stranger to the world of art.

In 1957 and 1958, Bagong studied dance choreography under the tutelage of the renowned Martha Graham, whose methods are still frequently employed in modern dances all over the world. Using this experience, Bagong combined these modern moves with traditional Indonesian dances.

Over the course of his life, Bagong choreographed more than 200 Indonesian dances including the tari layang-layang ("kite dance") in 1954, tari satria tangguh ("the strong noble"), Kebangkitan dan Kelahiran Isa Almasih ( "the Ascension and the Birth of Jesus") in 1968, and Bedaya Gendeng from the 1980s.

Due to his love and dedication to dance choreography, many of his paintings feature dancing figures. A few of his paintings can be viewed by the public at the Neka Art Museum (NAM) Indonesian Contemporary Painting Pavilion. Tomorrow we will highlight one of his popular painting at NAM.

Today we honored the birth of the passionate maestro, Bagong Kussudiardja.

The earliest paintings with Western influences in Bali were produced in Ubud after the 1920s. They are known as the Ubud Style Painting.

The Western aesthetics of light and shadow, depth, and anatomy were taught to the region by two prominent individuals. They were Walter Spies (1895-1942) and Johan Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978).

Born in Surakarta to a family of batik makers, 𝗗𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵 (1919-1996) was no stranger to the art world — he's a veteran. While he was a member of the Seniman Indonesian Moeda (SIM), 𝗗𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵 had the opportunity to study painting under 𝗦. 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗷𝗼𝗷𝗼𝗻𝗼 and 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶.

Earning the title “revolutionary painter”, 𝗗𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵 and fellow young painters depicted many episodes of struggle and battle that took place during the Dutch colonization of Yogyakarta.

Walter Spies (1895 - 1942) is a legendary painter from Germany who contributed to the art development in Bali. Painting isn’t Spies only expertise, he is also a prominent musician, choreographer, and curator.

Spies arrived in Bali in 1925, due to an invitation from the King of Ubud, Tjokorda Gede Raka Soekawati. This trip introduce Spies to the beauty and mystique of Balinese culture. This trip lured Spies to move to Bali in 1927.

During his tenure in Bali, he produced a number of notable paintings that contributed to Bali's rise to fame and attracted numerous tourists from abroad.

Walter Spies also collaborated with I Wayan Limbak to choreographed a famous dance we appreciate until today, the Kecak Dance.

We commemorate the birth of this renowned maestro, who helped Bali's artistic growth, today.
