Ireland is actually the only country in the world to have a musical instrument as its national emblem....
No musical instrument has ever had to carry so much baggage - The Story of the Irish Harp is integral to Ireland and Irish culture. Based on the ancient lyre, the Irish harp is one of the world’s oldest instruments. The ancient Irish kings employed harpists to entertain them, so harpists held great prestige in society. Gaelic society was the dominant social structure across Ireland and the Scottish Highlands up until the 1600s. These two territories were intimately connected. At one sad point in Irish history, British invaders made it illegal to possess an Irish harp and set out to burn every Irish harp in a failed attempt to kill the “Irish spirit.” Then, the preservation of ancient Irish harpists’ music became a challenge.
- Leading harp maker, John Egan, who worked in Dublin from 1801-1841 - During his illustrious career, he made more than two thousand harps including this beauty!!

C O L C A N N O N
a very long time ago, bowls of Colcannon were left on the front doorsteps of Irish homes for wandering spirits in search of their earthly abode. It was also used for games of marriage divination, whereby charms (namely a ring for marriage and a thimble for spinsterhood) were hidden inside the fluffy mixture and bowls were then served to the young women living at home to foretell their future. And finally, Irish colleens sometimes hung socks, partially filled with Colcannon, on their front door on Halloween night in the belief that the first man through the door would be their future husband.
"Did you ever eat Colcannon, made from lovely pickled cream?
With the greens and scallions mingled like a picture in a dream.
Did you ever make a hole on top to hold the melting flake
Of the creamy, flavoured butter that your mother used to make?
The chorus:
Yes you did, so you did, so did he and so did I.
And the more I think about it sure the nearer I'm to cry.
Oh, wasn't it the happy days when troubles we had not,
And our mothers made Colcannon in the little skillet pot."

Bantry | County Cork
The Irish coastline is dotted with some of the very charming towns and villages that are often a little off the beaten path and are therefore able to retain their unique charm and slow-paced lifestyle. Truer in all sense in the case of Bantry, this coastal town in Cork is a little gem that can be easily missed out, this little village has some spectacular natural scenery Ireland has to offer. Bantry didn’t escape our eyes and we’ve been returning every year. Bantry is actually a beautiful fishing town.
Be it an escape to the coast for an idyllic break in a haven by the sea. with Ireland’s most charming fishing villages to visit then by all means Bantry will be a good stopping point and gateway to the handful of charming towns and villages of beautiful West Cork. Explore the wonderful beaches and rugged heathlands, not to mention its seemingly endless period house, gardens, and heritage. By the time That we can travel, I am sure that the sea, warmed by months of summer is at its most inviting here.
While here in Bantry we encourage you to visit the Bantry house to see the house museum and gardens, Kealkill Megalithic Stone Circle, and Standing Stones and Béicín Loop.
