I do not see patients who have active coldsores, especially with a scale and polish. Our environment is full of aerosols and particles flying in the air.

If you have an active coldsore it can disperse and latch to another parts of the face including the eye and the nose.

The above picture shows a friend of mine who unfortunately got a coldsore around their eye.

While some practices may still go ahead with treatment I was trained in dental school not to treat anybody with an active coldsore.

If you are ever concerned about having a coldsore it’s best to ring ahead of your appointment. If the coldsore is dead and inactive we can of course still treat you

Today marks World Oral Health Day

Oral health is the foundation to overall health ❤️ by removing the bacteria in our mouths we illuminate the possibility of it causing destruction to the soft and hard oral tissues as well as systemic harm.

In our life time we spend a lot of time brushing our teeth so make sure you get the right advice from your dental professional to make sure you’re doing it right

You can really take advantage of brushing your teeth to focus on your mindfulness because you can’t really talk. It can be an opportunity to take time for yourself.

Mindfulness Toothbrushing consists of using your five senses
Sight-what can you see around you?
Taste-mostly the toothpaste in your mouth
Feel-feeling the brush in your mouth or the brush in your hand
Hear-sometimes we can hear the toothbrush in the mouth or maybe the extractor fan the bathroom
Smell-smells of the toothpaste and maybe any candles/air fresheners in the bathroom.

Anyways let’s get to the point, when we floss and move the floss string around our hands, we are transferring the bacteria from our mouths to our hands.

Bacteria can transfer from surfaces and in the air we breathe

Did you know that it is better and recommended to brush your teeth before your breakfast rather than after?

The reasons for this is, a lot of our foods contain acids and therefore the mechanical action of brushing can aid to erosion to the enamel.
When we brush before breakfast we remove bacteria that has been growing all night (🤮) and we also apply a topical coat of protection to the teeth with our toothpaste.

Rule of thumb is

Fizzy water can cause cavities

Carbonated water is acidic and acid in the mouth can cause cavities

While water is healthy for us to drink be careful if it is just fizzy water you are drinking

Changing your toothbrush or toothbrush head is 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 important.

Our toothbrush mechanically removes bacteria from the mouth and has a lot of surface area as well as being a moist place so it is the perfect place for bacteria to grow 🤮🤮

A snails mouth is tiny tiny and they have up to 25000 teeth!!!!!! I honestly never thought of a snails mouth before lol I just assumed it was enzymes that digested their foods 😦😦

Age is only a number when it comes to looking after your oral health. ✨

It is important to see your dentist and dental hygienist if you have implants, dentures, braces, retainers or even if you just have one tooth.
You don’t need to have a full set of teeth to see us and it doesn’t matter if your first time on the dental chair is later in life

“I had been running my other business Fab Fillies selling ladies accessories. Slowly but surely people I knew started asking me for a special piece for their hair for their wedding or maybe some earrings. Little by little I grew the stock and after a few months I could see there was a gap in the market for a place to go to get ALL of your bridal accessories. So I took the giant leap and secured a premises in Castlemartyr over the florist. I started with one floor and now have 2 floors packed to the rafters!!

My fav part:
Is honestly the people that come through the door of Wedding Belles. I meet the loveliest people, brides, Mums of the Bride/Groom and some soon to be hubbies!! Last weekend I had 2 brides that travelled from Dublin. And today a Mother of the Groom from Limerick for hat hire. So the word is spreading..slowly but surely.

What is fav product...
I love all of the bridal shoes I stock...particularly Clara
Uber cool pearl sandal and also Maya, ivory block heel with pearl detail.

Most challenging aspect:
Getting the word out there about Wedding Belles...it's like a big secret...when people visit they are like 'I can't believe all of this array of bridal accessories are in Castlemartyr!!'

Hopes for the future...
I have a vision of building the online store www.weddingbelles.ie a lot bigger than it is now. It's a work in progress but so far so good. Also I plan on changing the shop around a lot over the coming months to display our gorgeous accessories in a better way making customer shopping a better experience.”

A smile is not only a beautiful thing but a psychological power tool.
This patient came to see me a few weeks ago! They were 14!!!!! Poor thing didn’t know how to brush correctly nor did they understand the importance of doing so.
Hats off to their parents for saying “this isn’t right” and taking them to a private dental clinic.
We have set a healthy oral hygiene programme for this young soul and I will see them again in a few weeks.
And hopefully they’ll be beaming 😁

Here’s a pic of me, a woman, in a profession I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to do if I were alive in a different life time or in a different country.

As a child, the dental chair is extremely terrifying.

Sometimes that can stem from past trauma, and sometimes it can be from parents actions and reactions towards the dental environment.

And sometimes it can just be down to completely not understanding what’s going on.

Using props like poppets, funky glasses and explaining what you’re going to do will really help with the trust barrier that needs to be built up.

If you think about it. Us dental care professionals, are literally in your body! In a part where you cannot move or talk or even breathe properly. You do almost loose control of your 5 senses.

Dealing with patients with sensory issues can be quite challenging for both patient and clinician but dentistry is ever changing and always evolving for the better. So don’t be afraid to mention your own fears or worries as well as for children.

I popped this image up on my stories a few days ago and 93% of you said “no way would I get this done”

A few things that bother me about this snap I took from another social media page are :
•This is not preformed by a dental professional
•The patient clearly needs some oral hygiene instructions
•The patients teeth were not cleaned sufficiently enough before applying foreign objects to the tooth’s surface.
•These studs will cause more surface area for bacteria to grow
•You are putting yourself at risk of both infection and decay forming underneath and around the studs
•The patient will leave with no professional help on their gums - which are quite inflamed.
•It doesn’t really look aesthetically pleasing
•What are the standards of infection control?
•I’m pretty sure from this photo I can see some plaque and calculus lurking.
•There is some type of trauma on the soft tissues possibly caused by ill correct techniques.

Basically DONT DO IT.

We have a thumb sucker in our house!

As you can see Corey’s teeth are already protruding during to sucking his thumb. But this is not the only problem thumbing sucking can cause.
This thumb sucking has only started the past 6 months. We are putting it down to Corey becoming not only a big brother but also a big cousin all in the space of a few weeks.

Some tips to help your child stop are:
-Talk to them about the problem and do not turn it into a confrontation
-Apply nail biting varnish to the nails (I know, it’s cruel)
-Keep taking the thumb out which will be easier during sleep
-Give them something else to fidget with
-Thumb sucking can be a comfort or done for anxiety reasons so talk to your child, let them know they’re safe

Communication is key 🔑
