Sinn Féin TD expresses continued concern at water discolouration in Cork city
Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central, Thomas Gould, has this week expressed his concern at the continued water discolouration in Cork city and particularly on the Northside. He raised these concerns with Uisce Eireann at the Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Speaking after the meeting, Teachta Gould said:
“Irish Water are now saying it will be November before they even know if their interventions have worked. In the meantime, my constituents have dirty brown water coming from their taps. I brought a bottle of water into the Committee. It came from a house in Gurranabraher. While the water looked clear, there was rust and dirt settled at the bottom. Irish Water are telling people that the water is safe when it runs clear but this water clearly isn’t safe. I am really concerned that people are drinking this kind of water.
“I raised particular concern at the level of manganese in the water. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry have said that a number of reports indicate that oral exposure to manganese, especially from contaminated water sources, can produce significant health effects. These effects have been most prominently observed in children and are similar to those observed from inhalation exposure. An actual threshold level at which manganese exposure produces neurological effects in humans has not been established. How is manganese being tested and are we certain that there won’t be longterm consequences for Cork citizens?
“I asked Uisce Eireann to explain what has happened that has allowed these issues to happen. They admitted that there were issues with the water treatment plant and that they were investing further to resolve these. It is clear that these issues are somebody’s fault but it is my constituents who have to pay for bottled water and new household appliances. This is water charges by another means.
“I formally requested that Irish Water provide bottled water, through community organisations and GAA clubs. People need access to clean, safe water. They shouldn’t have to pay in shops for this, they should be able to get this from their taps and if they can’t, then Uisce Eireann must provide an alternative. Dirty, brown and orange water is not acceptable - Tanora should come in a bottle, not from people’s taps!”
