The Best Exercise for Maintaining Muscle Mass as We Age

As we age, maintaining muscle mass becomes increasingly important for overall health and well-being. While any exercise is beneficial for keeping your body active and strong, incorporating resistance training into your weekly routine can have significant advantages in preserving muscle mass.

Resistance training, which includes activities such as weight lifting, resistance band exercises, or bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats, works by challenging your muscles to adapt and grow stronger. This type of exercise is particularly effective in maintaining and even increasing muscle bulk, which can decline naturally as we age.

At APC Physio, we’ve been helping people maintain their muscle mass and overall function for years, particularly through the integration of resistance training. Our clinics in Fermoy and Cork have supported countless individuals in their journey to stay strong and healthy as they age, even when dealing with common aches and pains.

Engaging in regular resistance training can help prevent muscle loss, improve balance, enhance metabolism, and support joint health. It’s not just about lifting heavy weights; even moderate resistance can make a big difference. The key is consistency—making resistance training a regular part of your exercise regimen.
At APC Physio, we understand the importance of tailored exercise programs that meet your individual needs. Whether you’re working out at home or at a gym, we’ve been supporting our clients in Fermoy and Cork with effective resistance training strategies that are safe and effective. This ongoing support has been central to maintaining our clients’ health and function over the years.

If you’re unsure where to start or need guidance on creating a resistance training program that suits your lifestyle, we encourage you to consult with one of our experienced physiotherapists at APC Physio. Our team specializes in helping individuals maintain optimal health and function as they age, and we’re here to assist you in achieving your fitness goals.

Reach out to us today to learn more about how we can support your journey to staying strong and healthy.

Choosing the right Physiotherapist for you

Finding a Physiotherapist who can truly help you requires more than just checking their qualifications or looking at online reviews. It’s about finding someone who takes the time to understand your unique situation, who can explain complex issues in a way that makes sense to you, and who fosters open communication throughout your recovery journey.

A Physiotherapist who asks the right questions, communicates clearly and empathetically, and encourages your involvement in the process is one who is likely to help you achieve the best possible outcome. Your recovery is a partnership, and having a physio who is committed to your long-term well-being can make all the difference.

So, when choosing a physiotherapist, pay attention to these signs. They’re the indicators that your physio has the skills, the knowledge, and the commitment to help you not only recover but thrive.

Elbow pain often develops gradually, becoming worse over time. You might notice discomfort when picking up objects or turning a key, leading you to avoid these movements or use your other hand. The area around the bony point on the side of your elbow may become tender to the touch. Some days might be better than others, but the pain usually persists and worsens if left untreated.

This condition is commonly known as tennis elbow, but the correct term is Lateral Elbow Tendinopathy. Tendons, which connect muscles to bones, can develop micro-tears through overuse, leading to pain. Tendinopathy typically results from exceeding the tendon's load tolerance, often after an unusual physical task or over time.

Tendons take longer to heal than muscles, which is why pain persists in the tendon rather than the muscle. To address elbow pain, it's crucial to avoid aggravating the tendon, which may vary depending on the tendon affected and the severity. Treatment techniques that release muscle tension can reduce pain and help you begin strengthening the muscle-tendon unit.

The key to recovery is gradually increasing the strength of the affected muscle and tendon through progressive exercises. These exercises must be done correctly and at the right times to promote recovery without overloading the tendon. The longer the condition persists, the longer the recovery process can take.

If you're struggling with elbow pain, consider booking a free physiotherapy consultation to get a tailored approach to your recovery.

Are you looking for a Physio led exercise class with a difference? Movement Revolution may be what you're looking for. Try this free video class and see for yourself what its all about.

Movement Revolution targets multiple body parts at the one time and use a particular combination of breathing and movements to get the best results from your body.

Movement Revolution is perfect for those who may not have a high level of fitness, but have done some type of exercise class before. It is also extremely beneficial for those who are at elite level fitness. Our classes will improve your:

Body & Breath Awareness – we will not just tell you to copy our movements but we will teach you how to be aware of your body positions, your muscle activation and control of your movements & your breathing.

Coordination – we will ensure your movement is fully controlled to optimise your co-ordination which will help improve any tasks you carry out, day-to-day or in sport.

Core Strength – we focus a lot on working our stabilising muscles; these include the core muscles and many more. These muscles can often become dormant and we frequently see them weakened when testing in our clinic.

Flexibility/Mobility – our classes also put a focus on flexibility/mobility; we include stretching exercises throughout the class to help relaxation and maximise the movement of all our joints.

Strength – like all good classes we will focus on the strength of all of our muscles; we will give progressions of exercises so everyone can challenge themselves to their own level.

Running Technique – yes, running technique can and should always be improved – this will definitely help your performance.

Balance – this is a very important component of physical fitness, especially as we get older. We spend time on balance exercises during every class to help you take control of your body when you feel un-balanced

Why Hands-On Treatment Isn't Always Best

Despite what we might think when we think of Physiotherapy, hands-on treatment isn't always the best path to healing.

Imagine this: You've been dealing with persistent pain or discomfort, and you decide to seek help from a physiotherapist. You've heard that hands-on treatment can work wonders, and indeed, it can! It reduces pain, improves blood flow, and can make you feel better overall.

However our experienced team at APC Physio know there is more to it than that and here's the twist: it might not be the complete solution you're looking for.

Would we need an MRI for plantar fascia?

We already know there's pain in the arch of the foot that behaves in a particular way, typical to plantar fascia problems.
This includes pain when getting out of bed in the morning, which is very uncomfortable on the first few steps and can take up to five or ten minutes to soften out as the pain subsides, if it does at all. Or even later in the day, after you sit down for an hour, you experience pain on those first few steps again.

This happens because the sensitivity in the plantar fascia structures has kicked in, and it's stiff to get going again as you stand to your feet and walk.
Other issues that we, as physios, consider or take into consideration are bone bruising, heel pad pain, and nerve entrapment problems. However, we can differentiate between the symptoms and behaviour of these and do not need an MRI for that.
So, if you think you have plantar fascia problems and need some advice, book in with us to identify the root cause of your foot pain and get started on your journey to walk without discomfort.

The Value of Pre-Surgery Physiotherapy

Over the last two months, we have seen a significant influx of referred patients for knee and hip surgeries. Through this, we've observed a notable difference in recovery rates for those who have actively engaged in pre-operative physiotherapy.
Engaging in strength work, hands-on treatment, specific exercises and increasing one's knowledge before surgery helps build muscle and familiarity with the exercise and overall confidence levels, ensuring the brain and body know what to do post-surgery.
Patients who participated in pre-surgery physiotherapy have reported lower pain levels, quicker cessation of medication, and faster improvement in the range of movement.
For instance, several knee replacement patients were walking normally without crutches within four weeks.
This pre-operative effort results in a smoother and quicker recovery, reducing the strain on the body, liver, and kidneys.

One Shoulder Exercise You Should Avoid & Why

It is time to get with the times when it comes to shoulder rehabilitation.

Thankfully there has been a lot of fantastic work done by leading shoulder specialists such as Jeremy Lewis, Lynn Watson , Jo Gibson and Bot Donatelli, which help guide clinical practice.

After attending several of these courses over the last 15 years or more, Patrick and the APC Physio team have taken the most effective components from each approach and put them together into a system that gets to the real root cause and gets long lasting results.

If you have shoulder pain and are trying to do this ' climbing the wall' exercise then you may find it beneficial to watch this video and then make an informed decision from there.

If you would like to speak to one of our physios about our treatment approach please contact us .

Could you be making your pain worse? | APC Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic 17/07/2024

When you have an injury, pain or ni**le, it’s human nature to try to do something to help it. Most people will start to do something themselves, it may be a simple movement or a stretch.

Oftentimes, people will repeat the movement that is sore expecting it to help. Most times it doesn’t.

There are certain circumstances when you do need to repeat some movements or exercises and gradually build up the tolerance. But this is only after an assessment to find out what is going on. Most of the time it won’t help, or can make it worse!
