⭐️ Meet the Carrigaline team

First up is, Shannon

Shannon graduated from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh in 2019 after completing a Masters in Physiotherapy. Prior to this, she completed a BSc in Sports Rehabilitation and Athletic Therapy from IT Carlow.

Since graduating, Shannon has gained extensive experience working for the NHS in a variety of clinical settings including MSK outpatients, orthopaedics, stroke, intensive care and acute ward settings. From this experience she has shown a particular interest in musculoskeletal injuries and orthopaedic rehab.

Whilst living in Edinburgh she also gained invaluable experience in elite sport working for Scottish premiership side Hearts FC from 2020-2022. During this time she worked for Hearts Academy managing acute and chronic sport related injuries with adolescent and youth ages groups. She later progressed to Hearts Women’s First Team Physiotherapist for the 2021/22 season and has a great interest in the development of women's sports.

Since returning back to Ireland, Shannon has been working as a Physiotherapist in the Mater Private Cork. This has given her great knowledge in the management of pre and post operative orthopaedic surgeries. Living in a constant cycle of pain can be overwhelming and draining, but it doesn't have to be your reality. Remember, if nothing changes, nothing changes. Repetition becomes habit and poor habits can drive pain.

One thing we do with all our clients is identify risk factors or drivers of pain. Things like stress, sleep, worry, beliefs and other lifestyle factors can prime the body to produce a painful response to a small stimulus leaving us frustrated.

Think of it like a really sensitive car alarm that keeps going off unnecessarily.

If this sounds like you - we can help!

Do your joints SNAP, CRACKLE and POP?

And if so, is this something to worry about?

Well first of all, it’s completely normal for our joints to make noises. The majority of the time this is just due to gas escaping from the liquid within a joint.

So if your joints are making noises without any other symptoms then there’s nothing to worry about.

BUT if the snaps, crackles and pops are accompanied by pain and/or swelling then there might be something worth looking at.

DON’T jump to any conclusions without seeing a physio though!

BONUS MYTH BUST: Cracking your neck, fingers, etc will not lead to the onset of arthritis, so don't worry!

HAMSTRING INJURIES - What you need to know

SAVE this post to view again later!
TAG an athlete who needs to see this

The hamstrings are some of the most common muscles injured, especially in sports that involve sprinting and kicking.

The thing about hamstring injuries is that their recurrence rate is CRAZY high. Once picking up an initial hamstring strain you are 2-6 times more likely to pick up a subsequent strain in the future!

SO, this means that athletes really do have to put a big effort into reducing their chance of picking up an initial hamstring strain!

Our top hamstring INJURY PREVENTION TIPS ARE;
-Increase hamstring strength through exercises like; Nordic hamstring curl, Romanian deadlift, hamstring curl, etc.
-Practise high speed running at least once per week (This builds up your hamstrings tolerance to sprinting)
-Build your aerobic fitness (Hamstring injuries are more likely to occur in the latter half of games when fatigue set in)

If you’re currently in pain, READ THIS.

It’s not only pain that is limiting you right now, but your FEAR of pain.

If we say for example you were picking up a heavy box from the floor. This was maybe a little heavier than what your body is used to so it set off a bit of Back Pain. You naturally become more cautious about bending down to pick up a box off the floor again.

This is a TOTALLY normal response - you are just trying to protect yourself from injuring yourself again.

Where we start to run into issues is when pain begins to persist beyond the point of “tissue healing”. Our thoughts, beliefs and emotions around pain can be responsible for pain lasting longer than it has to.

When this happens it is not pain that’s limiting you, but the FEAR of doing something that will instigate pain again. So, the fear of pain can actually be more disabling than pain itself.

If you are currently in pain, don’t suffer in silence. Our expert Physiotherapists are trained in managing all kinds of pain conditions. We will take the worry and anxiety out of your recovery process.

How to PREVENT injury.

SAVE this post to view again later!
TAG a gym-goer/athlete who needs to see this!

Well, first of all I have to say that it’s impossible to 100% prevent injury.

BUT there are a few things you can do to significantly reduce your chance of picking up an injury.

-BUILD YOUR TOLERANCE to exercise. A good rule to keep in mind is to only increase your training intensity/volume by a maximum of 10% per week.

-AVOID OVERTRAINING;. IYour body NEEDS to rest and recover between exercise sessions so make sure to include regular rest days!

-GET ENOUGH SLEEP; Sleeping

Is it BAD to bend your back?

This is a myth that has to be BUSTED.

Let me begin by saying there is absolutely nothing wrong with bending your back!

In fact, it’s actually impossible to avoid bending your back hundreds of times throughout the day - putting on socks, tying your shoelaces, sweeping the floor, sitting in a chair, etc, etc, etc.

The idea that repetitive back bending is harmful was propagated by research that was carried out on pig spines - while pigs’ bodies may not be able to tolerate sitting in a chair, putting on socks and tying shoes, thankfully our bodies are lol!

Are you currently experiencing back pain? Let our expert Physiotherapists take the uncertainty and anxiety out of your recovery and guide you smoothly through the rehab process!

How to deal with FLARE-UPS during injury rehab.

If you’re rehabbing from pain or injury it be very extremely worrying and disheartening to have a pain flare-up. It’s important to note, however, that these are a completely normal part of the rehab process.

Here’s some tips to help manage these flare-ups when they arise:
-DON’T PANIC! I know that this is easier said than done but just trust that flare-ups are a NORMAL part of the rehab process.
-LEARN FROM IT; When a flare-up happens, try to think back to identify the factors which may have caused it (e.g were you going through a stressful period, did you do more activity than usual, etc) Once you have identified what lead to the flare-up, try to take steps to avoid this happening again.
-SEEK SUPPORT; Reach out to your Physiotherapist for guidance for how you can best manage your flare-up. We’ll be only too happy to help

Do you ever feel “stiff” or “tight”?

If you do, you’re absolutely not alone.

Interestingly, just because we feel like our muscles are “stiff” or “tight”, it does not mean that they have any structural changes. This feeling of stiffness and tightness is just that, a feeling!

BUT what does this mean for you?

Well the good news is that if this tightness is just a “feeling” or “sensation”, then there are lots of stuff we can do to change it.

For SHORT-TERM RELIEF you can;
-Stretch the muscle
-Foam roll the muscle
-Massage the muscle

BUT, more importantly, for LONG-TERM relief you should try to;
-Improve your sleep quality
-Move more throughout the day
-Use a standing desk
-Strengthen the affected muscles

You don’t have to be a victim of persistent muscle stiffness, let our expert Physiotherapists show you the path out of pain.

Should I be WORRIED about my neck pain?

If you are currently experiencing neck pain you are definitely not alone. It is one of the most common conditions we treat here in the clinic!

Knowing the main causes of neck pain can put some of the worries you may have surrounding your condition to bed.

Thankfully, ~90% of neck pain does NOT have a sinister or scary cause, it is just due to normal irritations in the cervical spine.

The main causes of these irritations are;
-Lack of movement
-Muscle stiffness (has more to do with psychological stress than with actual muscle “tightness”)
-Nerve irritation

Less than 1% of neck pain is due to more sinister things like infection, cancer, spinal cord damage, etc.

If you are currently experiencing neck pain, don’t suffer in silence, let our expert Physiotherapists guide you through the recovery process so you are PAIN-FREE as soon as possible.
