ATV - All Terrain Vehicle
What it is ?
As you can see in the photos, our ATV is similar to a quad bike just built more like a car. It has off road capabilities which means we can drive it off road, on beaches or on the mountains to aid us in a search and rescue operations.
What capabilities does it have ?
Our ATV offers our team the capability to move equipment quicker and safely from different locations. It also offers us the ability to complete a search of a large area quickly but also transport our team to a remote locations if needed.
π Remember if you see anyone in difficulty in or near tdhe water, π dial 112 π immediately and ask for the Coast Guard.
Last week our team attended the BT Young Scientist event in the RDS. On display at the Irish Coast Guard stand was an ATV π(All Terrain Vehicle), inflatable boat π€ (D-Class) and also a drone.
Our main aim was to discuss water safety with all the students who came to our stand.
We gave them the opportunity to get into the boat with a helmet and lifejacket, showing them the safety measures our teams take when they are on the water and the importance of wearing a lifejacket.
We also gave them the opportunity to get inside the ATV to experience what itβs like inside.
Big thank you to BT for inviting us along to the event to promote water safety. π
Until next year π
Over the past few weeks and months our drone team have been doing extra training to familiarise themselves with the drone technology to ensure that when we are called into action to complete a search with our drone, we can be as efficient and effective as possible.
Last weekend we took the opportunity to fly over Sandymount strand to view the sandbanks and get used to flying the drone in that area.
Reminder if you ever see our unit out flying the drone please stay back and do not distract our members as it is crucial they stay focused while the drone is operational.
Busy start to the year for our team with 2 incidents on January 1st.

Recently we did a joint training session with our flank station, Greystones/Wicklow Coast Guard Unit. We invited them up to our station to show how our drone works and also its capabilities. We also showed them our salvage pump, which would be most commonly used for boats that are taking on water.
These training exercises are excellent for our teams, as we gain invaluable experience and time together to brush up on our techniques.
We look forward to our next joint training session with them and also to welcoming Irish Coast Guard - Howth team to our station in the New Year.

As we get further into the Autumn & Winter season, please consider the elements when you decide to go walking in the evening or at night along the coast line.
Please consider the following:
1. Where you will be walking? Is the terrain safe? Rocky? Uneven?
2. The weather conditions? Slippery terrain or rough seas going to put you at risk?
3. What time will it be getting dark? Sufficient light to see your way back safely from the coast line?
4. Do you have a torch or flashlight, which could help? Sufficient battery level on your mobile phone?
Also, please make sure you tell someone that you are going walking and where so someone will be able to inform our emergency services if something went wrong. And remember, donβt take risks!
