The WEEVERFISH is found in all parts of the Irish coast but only in sandy areas, usually in warm shallow waters in the hour before and after low tide. Unlike most fish, they have no swim bladder, meaning that they sink to the bottom as soon as the stop swimming. They are, therefore, difficult to see because they spend most of their time buried under the sand. The have sharp spines containing venom on their dorsal fin.

WHAT TO EXPECT
🟢 Standing on a Weeverfish results in immediate intense, burning pain.
🟢The pain is most intense in the first 2 hours and can result in swelling, numbness and warmth.

WHAT TO DO
✅ Seek assistance from a lifeguard, if available.
✅ Submerge the affected limb or wound in hot water, as hot as can be tolerated for up to 90 minutes or until pain is easing.
✅ As the sting can result in numbness, immerse the unaffected limb too, as this may prevent inadvertent scalding.
✅ Cold applications may worsen the discomfort.
✅ Paracetamol can be considered to relieve pain. Care should be taken when pain relief is given that thermal burns do not occur due to the effects of the pain killer masking the temperature of the water used.
✅ The puncture site should be examined and embedded spines removed.
✅ Seek medical attention from a doctor as a tetanus and/or antibiotics may be required.

Dr. Andreica graduated from the Dental and Medicine University in Bucharest in 2000.The first two years following her graduation she worked in the Public Healthcare System as a General Dentist in a High School Dental Surgery.

Starting 2001 until 2008 Monica worked in a Private Dental Clinic in Bucharest. During this time she attended numerous dental training courses in such disciplines as cosmetic dentistry, endodontics, dental prosthetics in order to provide a high standard of treatment to her patients.

In 2007 she opened her own Private Practice in Bucharest with the main objective of prevention and treatment with effective and long-lasting effects of all dental diseases. Providing a high level of professionalism, comfort, and maximum hygiene in a fun and friendly atmosphere led to a very quick increase in the number of returning patients.

Monica moved to Ireland in 2013 and immediately joined a clinic in West Dublin as a General Dentist where she provided high-standard dental services until she decided to open her own practice. Should pregnant women visit the dentist?

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about pregnancy and dental health, but we’ve got you covered. It’s important for your dentist and hygienist to know that you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

You may be at risk for certain dental conditions, and your pregnancy may limit the treatment options available. Always let your dental team know if you are or may be pregnant, how far along you are, and if your pregnancy is high-risk.

Pregnant women are at greater risk for certain oral health conditions. These conditions include gum disease, also known as “pregnancy gingivitis”. Some women can develop overgrowths of the gums tissue, most often during the second trimester. It is a swelling that happens most often between teeth. They may be related to excess plaque. They bleed easily and have a red, raw-looking raspberry-like appearance. Both conditions are treatable, so make sure to visit your dentist.

Everyone — and especially pregnant women — should visit the dentist. If you’re pregnant, you face a higher risk for gum disease, so make sure to visit your dentist for regular cleanings, exams, and any other treatment needed.
Skipping on dental care could affect your pregnancy, as well as your dental health. Untreated gum disease may be linked to pre-term and low-weight birth.

Should I inform my dentist if I suffer from morning sickness?

Repeated vomiting can cause serious damage to your teeth. Exposure to stomach acid dissolves tooth enamel, weakening your teeth’ defense against decay. If you suffer from morning sickness, talk to your dentist about ways to reduce the harm, such as using a mouthguard or rinsing with baking soda.

What about anesthesia?

Some studies have found a relationship between anesthesia in the first trimester and early miscarriage. If you need treatment requiring anesthesia, your dentist may be recommending postponing the procedure unless it is an emergency.

Can pregnant women have x-rays taken?

X-rays can be essential in detecting serious problems, such as hidden decay, bone loss, and inflamed tooth pulp. No research has found a link between dental x-rays and birth defects, although some studies did find an increase in low birth weight among women who had dental x-rays while pregnant. If you have any concerns, talk to your dentist, who can help evaluate your case and decide whether x-rays can be postponed.
