DESIGN FOR : O F F I C E #1
The Collaborative Office:
What makes an effective office that can last in our ever changing fast-paced world? Collaboration - it is the concept that is making waves in how we perceive and design offices. Gone are the days of static, single-occupancy, grid-like office cubicles with minimal means for interactions between employers, management and employees alike. Today, open plan, communal spaces are the key design features of the modern day office, encouraging organic encounters, diverse dialogue and limitless free flowing ideas. With a focus on devising a sustainable work environment conducive to happy, healthy, more productive staff - creative design characteristics must be cleverly thought out and implemented such as flexible layouts that can be easily interchanged depending on the project, team or function - why not have a board room double as a yoga studio? Fundamentally, collaboration is about accessing the shared currency of knowledge within the office, giving every individual's input an opportunity to be heard, explored and expanded on through casual conversation, brainstorming and uniting to achieve a goal.

LOOK OUT!
By Urban Agency Architects
Look out! touches on our relationship with the landscape and, more specifically, the urban landscape.
The birth of the new Irish state inspired Irish painters to use the landscape of town and country to promote both modernity and the ‘Celtic’ identity of the new Ireland. The landscape depictions were often imbued with a strong sense of nostalgia, melancholia and emptiness. They were the landscapes of a virtual reality, frozen in time, to look at within a frame but not to engage with physically. This romantic notion of the landscape as a pure, natural, pristine, unchanging space prevailed in the new Irish nation’s sense of itself. Meanwhile, there was little identification with urban Ireland, in so far as it was not seen as being an intrinsic part of an extreme and limited definition of the Irish identity. The result, in the Irish urban context, is a kind of perverse policy of ‘laissez faire’; a complete disengagement with the public space and public realm in general, other than as a place to be used for practical activities and transportation.
This piece, titled Look out!, consists of an antique golden frame that originally framed a still-life painting but that is now framing a film. The film shows the ‘before and after’ life of a man-made urban landscape designed by Urban Agency architects for Copenhagen's new harbour front in Denmark. Look out! seeks to create awareness about the importance of ‘looking out’ at our public space and urban landscape not solely as a place for contemplation, but also as an active place for recreation, exchange, interaction and, to a greater extent, an engine for social and economic regeneration.
Today, more than ever, the urban landscape needs to respond to the challenges of modern urban living. It can no longer just be looked at like a ‘still-life’ painting or used as a service network, but needs rather to be rethought, reworked, reorganized and re-sculpted to celebrate ‘life’, and availed of as a true democratic space for all citizens.

URBAN AGENCY HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR THE DESIGN OF A NEW PUBLIC SPACE IN DUBLIN
URBAN AGENCY to develop a Public Realm design for Newmarket and its environs in Dublin 8.
Newmarket is a planned and purpose built market space dating from 1670's. Its historic importance has been overlooked in recent times, and Newmarket is dislocated from the commercial area of the Liberties and the rest of the city. The ambition is to develop a new urban destination accommodating new development around the fringes of the space and wider range of new uses including markets, events, performance and outdoor seating for cafes and restaurants.
Urban Agency was part of the Irish architects represented in the London Festival of Architecture brought together by Dublin-based architect, Emmett Scanlon in an installation called: The Tank.
Urban Agency's contribution shows the concrete artist studio:"Formwork" responding to Emmett Scanlon's theme: workspace.
HYDE & SEEK
Here is our latest project for a new Creche in Dublin!
The awkward shape of the site, the adjacent traffic noise and the need for minimising windows at ground-floor level to prevent overlooking result from the site strategy. The building is placed at the centre of the site to create 3 gardens of various scale at its corners, serving as individualised amenities for the respective age group.
The creche is introverted at ground-floor level, opening into private landscaped courtyards; at first-floor level, windows are created to allow for distant views. The building is organised as a series of 4 small oval volumes that accommodate the various age groups, the administration and ancillaries. A large circular roof caps and unifies the building overall, serving as a vast external playground at first-floor level and also providing a covered multipurpose space at ground-floor level, acting as entrance foyer, event space, dining hall, play area, etc.
The roof playground is designed with a full storey (3 meter) high parapet all around, punctuated with carefully placed windows serving as windscreens, while allowing for a future extension to the creche to be inserted without altering the elevations or appearance of the building. The building and the site boundary wall are finished with red terracotta concrete panels to maintain a visual and architectural dialogue with the surrounding red-brick buildings.

URBAN AGENCY PROPOSAL FOR POOLBEG CHIMNEYS TO BECOME
DUBLIN OBSERVATION TWIN TOWERS:
The recent controversial suggesting to demolish the redundant but iconic Poolbeg chimneys by the ESB have seen large protests opposition including the Dublin City Councillor and historian Dermot Lacey to try to preserve them and rightfully.
International observation towers precedents:
There are numerous observations towers around the globe promoting the greatness of the cities where they stand with often much more success that the historical buildings. From modern Toranto’s CN tower to London’s EDF Eye wheel via historical Paris’ Eiffel tower, those city pins all rely on one thing: incredible height to offer breathtaking views. (Toranto CN tower: 457m, Eiffel tower: 324m, London wheel: 135m, Vancouver look out tower: 170m and our Poolbeg twins standing proudly from their 207m.)
All around the world, these city landmarks have proven to be very successful and profitable tourist attractions. (Toranto CN tTower €36 Millions with 1.2M visitors , London eye €50 Millions 3.5M Visitors, Eiffel Tower €5 Billions for 250 Millions while Guinness storehouse cashes €59 for 1.2M visitors).
Urban Agency proposal:
Urban Agency’s proposal wants to celebrate the unique identity and character of the Poolbeg Chimneys as one of Dublin important historical landmark by giving it a new life and converting the chimney into a new city active symbol and destination: Twin Observation Towers.
The proposal consist in adding a light glass “bubble like” structure to each of the existing tower at slightly different height (so they don’t obstruct each other) to create breathtaking views and experience while keeping the chimney’s architectural integrity.
This could include a 180m high observation deck in one and in the other a 160m high restaurant and rental venue for fundraising events, product launches, meetings, press conferences, cocktail receptions, and corporate parties. At the foot of the towers, we propose to have a publically accessible building including an energy museum /education centre, a shop, a cafe and toilet facilities.
This could be one of the most important city attraction with a potential annual visitors of 500 000 to 750 000 people, generating a potential annual turn over of €20 Million and all this for an estimate construction cost of circa 5-7 Millions Euros. The proposal would be commercially and financially sustainable as it would pay for itself in no time! So the chimneys are definitively worth sweeping…
God save the Twins!
