GREAT work by the A-Team at the Epilepsy Care Malahide Allotments today where some much needed remedial drainage and road surface upgrading has taken place,

Gardeners World advice ...
Best summer bedding plants to grow Advice on growing and caring for bedding plants, from begonias to cosmos.
Dumping issue needs to stop IMMEDIATELY!
Here's a few images of the type of material that is being illegally dumped in Malahide Allotments
Also the illegal dumping on organic waste on the side of the road must also STOP!!!
IT has to STOP!!!
Major issue of dumping of organic and domestic waste must be addressed immediately
Dumping of organic and domestic rubbish is now a major concern at Malahide Allotments and CEO Brian Geraghty is not a happy man - in fact he's livid!
The dumping is being carried out by Allotment holders and non allotment holders and Brian is unequivocal in his determination to put an end to it.
Allotment holders are creating linear dumps instead of creating mounds and that is brought about by simply emptying wheelbarrow loads at the 'last' illegal dumping.
There are designated points to dump organic waste (indicated by signs) and it is ONLY at these point that mounds are to be created.
The separate issue of domestic and household waste being dumped is an INSTANT RED CARD if you are an allotment holder.
Your lease will be terminated IMMEDIATELY and there will be no second chance.
Car batteries, children's scooters, bags of empty alcohol bottles, TV stands are just come of the items found on the skips and this is simply adding to the waste bill which currently runs at approximately €15000 per annum.
Brian is eager that Allotment Holders self-police their own community and if you spot or see 'illegal dumping' to either challenge the individual(s) or report to Brian what you have witnessed. (Your name will not be mentioned and your identity protected)
If it carries on, the only course of action is to increase the annual Allotment Fees!
This is your Allotment and this is your community and it's important not to turn a blind eye and to help address this problem that has simply escalated beyond all imagination.
Frustrated and hopping mad to put it mildly, Brian asks for everyone's co-operation and also if you see 'strangers' coming on to the site to either ask them what they are doing or, if you can, get a car registration, please do so.
One way or another, this absolute blight on life in Malahide Allotments has got to stop - or EVERYONE will face a hike in annual fees!
Brian fully appreciates that the vast majority of allotment holders fully abide by the regulations and this message is targeted at those who transgress - if identified, YOU WILL BE REMOVED AND YOUR LEASE CANCELLED IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!

Frank Nolan is one of the volunteers who helped with the rotovating and preparation of the meadow that will be planted to assist the recent arrival of 'wild seeds' from Mr Middleton.
He explains what is going on ....some noise in the background ok - but anyone wanting to make a contribution or help with some sponsorship of the meadow - please feel free to contact Brian at the allotments. The seeds cost €400 and you also have the hire of the rotovators too, so any financial assistance would be most welcome.

Enjoying the last of my potatoes and realising why they call the months of March to May the hungry gap 😬
Our ancestors had such wonderful knowledge getting them through the winter by canning and preserving their food.
The first supermarket didn't come to fruition until the early 1900s, and since then, convenience took society by the neck and has stangled patience, sustainability and skill right out of our hands. Quite shocking that 90% of food in supermarkets didn't exist 100 years ago and neither did the majority of disease and illness present nowadays. They now cram health into pill bottles and disregard any form of holistic wellbeing. Time to get back to our roots and take control of our health.
Out of this world paprika roasted small potatoes. Quick and easy to make, gluten free and so delicious! ☺️

Where would the GIYer be without the humble spud? Potatoes can be grown pretty much anywhere, produce a high yield from a relatively small space and store well. No wonder they have been a staple diet for Irish families for centuries. Potatoes are grown from last year’s potatoes, known as seed potatoes. These can be potatoes you save yourself or purchased certified seed potatoes. Buying certified seed potatoes guarantees the potatoes are virus free – these can be found in garden centres and hardware shops from January-April.
There are two types of potato variety: earlies and maincrop. Earlies are for harvesting in the summer and maincrop varieties are for use in the autumn and winter. If you are growing earlies, then it is recommended you start chitting them in February (you can also do this with your maincrop, but it is particularly beneficial with earlies).
“Chitting” the seed potatoes is allowing them to sprout to give them a head start before sowing. Lay the seed potatoes out in a shallow tray or used egg carton and leave them in a cool but frost free, reasonably light place. By March they will have developed green sprouts. Ideally these should be no longer than 2cm when planted, longer sprouts need very careful handling when planted out.
For a step by step guide to growing your own potatoes (or any veg!) check out GIY's Veg Directory: http://ow.ly/I5zt50N0tE1
