We are thrilled to announce the publication of A COLD EYE by Carlo Gébler, featuring stunning photographs by David Barker.
Drawing from journals he has kept for over four decades, Gébler stitches together days of his life into something bigger than his own lived experiences – a vivid patchwork history of the island over thirty-five years, capturing those sweeping changes in sharp, funny, slantwise pieces that will prompt readers to reflect on the strange process of how we got here.
Great to see the inclusion of Unladylike by among Aoife Barry's top non-fiction titles for this autumn in the Irish Independent. Pre order available via , link in bio ✨️
Just in the door and a recommend from Jo. Gebler is always a thoughtful writer and, whilst I didn’t always agree with his observations, this is an important book in the post-Troubles canon
An exciting few months ahead here ☺
Publishing on October 4th, bestselling ecology writer Richard Nairn presents an inspiring and practical call to restore nature.
By turns shocking, hopeful and finally positive, Future Wild shows that the damage we have done to nature can also be undone by us, and that, with nature restoration, we can create a richer and more diverse environment for generations to come.
Ahead of the upcoming publication of his 15th(!!) novel, Hide Away which is out on September 27th, we wanted to take a moment to appreciate the exceptional career of one of Ireland's best-loved writers, Dermot Bolger 🎉
Born in Dublin in 1959, the novelist, playwright and poet Dermot Bolger is one of Ireland’s best-known writers. His fourteen novels include The Journey Home, A Second Life, Tanglewood, The Lonely Sea and Sky and An Ark of Light. In 2020 he published his first collection of short stories, Secrets Never Told. His debut play, The Lament for Arthur Cleary, received the Samuel Beckett Award. His numerous other plays include The Ballymun Trilogy, charting forty years of life in a Dublin working-class suburb; and most recently, Last Orders at the Dockside and an adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses, both staged by the Abbey Theatre. His ninth poetry collection, The Venice Suite: A Voyage Through Loss, appeared in 2012. He devised the best-selling collaborative novels Finbar’s Hotel and Ladies Night at Finbar’s Hotel, and edited numerous anthologies, including The Picador Book of Contemporary Irish Fiction. A former Writer Fellow at Trinity College Dublin, Bolger writes for Ireland’s leading newspapers, and in 2012 was named Commentator of the Year at the NNI Journalism Awards. In 2021 he received The Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award for Poetry.
August is an busy month as we do most of our selecting and ordering of the autumn/winter books - but it’s lovely!
We also get some sneak previews and I’m really enjoying this by Carlo Gebler - ‘A Cold Eye’ diary entries of life in Ireland and Northern Ireland between 1989 to 2024. I think it will be popular.
Other Irish highlights include the most delightful kids board book by Manchán Magan, beautifully illustrated, introducing the Irish and English names for animals.
And the rugby fans will be well catered for with not one, but two, books about the Six nations, including a nice gift-priced one, and Johnny Sexton’s autobiography.
Now, back to raking through a few thousand books to see what looks most lovely!
