Game on!!
Today’s office - Custom House Quay, Dublin 1 for
Bored with Culture Night already? Come and join us on Sunday for the Car Free Day event on Custom House Quay!
More great photos from the Ploughing - many thanks to the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland for the invitation to participate in three days for fun in the sun;-)
We’re really enjoying our time with the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland at the National Ploughing Competition at Ratheniska, Co. Laois. Lots of talented, smiling kids (and a few adults) joining us for interactive intercultural performances and workshops. We are there again tomorrow in the Government of Ireland section - you’ll hear us;-)
Day 2 of the Ploughing! A rare opportunity to see some mummers in action!
NO REHEARSALS THIS WEEK.
Due to a very busy schedule, we have to cancel both the adult community band rehearsal this evening (Wednesday, 18th Sept.) and the rehearsal of the Masamba Youth Project tomorrow evening.
Apologies, and we will be back as usual next week.
Let the fun and games begin! Day 1 of the National Ploughing Championships. Weather is a lot better than last year, so that’s a good start;-)
2nd stop of the day - working with some students from the Central Model School to promote Car Free Day. The event itself will happen on Custom House Quay, Sunday 22nd September.
Super happy to be returning to St. Vincent’s Junior School, for a whole year of workshops, starting on Monday. We have a long and positive relationship with this school, and ex- members Sarah Walker and Jane O’Rourke might even remember these mosaic murals;-)
Today's the day! The Masamba Youth Project resumes with drumming session this afternoon, from 4.15 - 5.45pm. Sessions are free of charge and new members are always welcome.
A great afternoon was had by all at the celebration of Brazilian independence at City Hall. Very sad to hear that Ambassador Biato is moving to a new posting, as he has been a very strong supporter of Masamba’s work. Still, at least we still have the amazing Allesandra Azeviche!
Not to be negative, but it's a beautiful morning here in Dublin's Northside, and maybe the last one for a few months. So, take advantage of the good weather, and join us at Ellenfield Park this afternoon, from 1pm. Lots of family friendly activities and a Masamba Interactive Intercultural workshop into the bargain - all for free! https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=909635771193560&set=a.485856056904869
I’m just waiting for Julie Collins to help me clear all these cobwebs! Stage improvement at the rehearsal space today.
Ten years ago tonight, we were rehearsing for 'Harp - A river Cantata' - a show designed by Ulysses Opera Company, which launched the Dublin Fringe Festival 2014. Musically, this was definitely out of our wheelhouse, as you can see by the intense concentration of all involved. The event itself was great fun though and very well received!
Here's a short clip from our adventures in the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland as part of the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm last Saturday. The last few minutes of the session saw our workshop groups (from now on, known as the best group), jamming with a group of African drummers, led by Petit Mamady Keita. Despite having no opportunity to confer beforehand, the two pieces worked really well together!
Best of luck to all our friends participating in the Notting Hill Carnival today!
Excellent fun today, delivering a workshop in the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland as part of the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm almost 30 years to the day since the original Big Bang Festival, which marked the starting point of Masamba's adventures! Also great to have the opportunity to work with 'Petit' Mamady Keita - an unbelievably talented musician from Guinea.
We've had a couple of people on to say that they are finding it hard to book places for today's Big Bang workshop at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland. This is the link for bookings - the samba workshop is the 2nd one down:
Still some places left for this workshop - book now!

Back out in Killarden today doing some workshops for the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland. Great set up out here, and the kids are brilliant!
More video footage from the archives. This time, we are at the Special Olympics World Games opening ceremony in Croke Park, June 21st, 2003. 20 members of Masamba volunteered to participate in a drumming extravaganza, directed by our good friend Noel Eccles, which sought to represent percussion from the 5 inhabited continents. We played as the Special Olympics flag was brought to the stage, in a truly poignant ceremony, which demonstrated the very best of what Irish people can achieve when they work together to voluntarily host athletes from around the world.
As part of our 30th Birthday celebrations, we have been trawling through some of the remaining archives from the earlier days of the band. We can across this video from the Funnel Club - a venue which operated only down the quays from the City Arts Centre, and where we did many of our first indoor gigs. I am guessing that this is 1996 or 1997, but I'm open to correction. The footage is very rough, but you can kind of make out Aoife Kane, Sarah Walker, Tina Lowe, Niamh Fawl, Colin Kenny, Justin Rami, Paul, Marion O'Toole, Helen Gibb (?), Fiona Galvin (?)- there were other there too, but the footage is simply too rough - any further info is welcome;-)
Another amazing workshop today with Alexandre Garnize. We teamed up with our colleagues Maracatu Ilha Brilhante to organise a day-long journey through the complex and compelling world of Maracatu. There was so much great information and insights from Alexandre, but also so much of what he said tallied with our own experiences in Olinda and Recife over the years. More news about our 30th Birthday celebrations soon, but for now, the drums lie silent.
