Join us in the Courthouse Gallery on Monday 6th of November at 8.15 p.m. for the NCHS Talk on Irish Fairies.
Admission is 8€
The North Clare Historical Society continues its current lecture series with a talk on Irish Fairies: A short history of the Irish Sídhe by Michael Houlihan.
For thousands of years, the Irish have believed in ‘the fairies’. In present-day Ireland however, as in so many modern societies, fairies have been retreating, almost to extinction. Nevertheless, the question might still be asked, what if Irish fairies were not created or imagined, but remembered?
Ireland can trace the origins of its fairies to pre-Christian times. The large stone structures and tombs dotting the Irish landscape from the Neolithic Age prompted the immigrant Celts to weave a complex story about the builders, creating a pantheon of early gods. Over time, these evolved into fairy royalty. Their habitations became concentrations of fairy folk in the early medieval landscape that still stand today.
It was generally understood that the fairies, na sídhe, led lives that paralleled human existence, but also stood apart. Living mostly underground, they showed themselves only when they chose to.
They also lived close to the death realms - separate, but only just. In this talk, Michael Houlihan invites us to take another look at our erstwhile neighbours. Every corner of Ireland retains a memory of the fairies - be it a cave, a hill, a tree, a lake or a fort. Their memories are intertwined with so many of our place names. Not long ago, they filled our days with wonder, taught us to respect the land, excused our foibles and made the fringes of our society so much more fascinating by their presence.

The experience of loss has the potential to promote a disintegration of the psyche which may warp familiar feelings of safety and security about the world in which we live. Others may find that grief invites expressive freedoms and new ways of experiencing their changed relationship with the deceased. Whatever the focus of the bereaved, their grief stories can illuminate personal creative abilities that can spark a regeneration of meaning about their own lives.

Hopkins is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in Ireland. She works between video, installation, drawing, collage and sculpture. She explores plants, flowers, folklore and psychology. Recent work and research have been kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland Bursary Award 2021, Platform 31 Development Award 2022, and the Meath County Council Arts Office Artists Award 2022.
Hopkins explores folklore with landscape and the human form, focusing on the female body, menstruation and native plants. The work uses native plants and dyes in its ex*****on and is based on local roads, lands and fields.
Reflecting on the seasonal and cyclical nature of growth and decay that is echoed in the female reproductive organs, I am interested in making abstract, hybrid connections between non-human entities and our human selves. It is a way to explore identity, and empathy for our natural environment & to better understand the human condition.
Hopkins explores a contemporary interpretation of traditional folklore, and the metaphysical gap between humans & plants – and how to view our bodies as extensions of a living landscape.
The found hawthorn tree branch is dotted and pierced with sheepswool stuffed seeds, fruits, breasts and o***s. Cotton material is dyed with hawthorn leaves, blackberries, elderberries, briars, pine cones and bracken ferns.
The Courthouse Gallery & Studios is delighted to invite you to the preview of our next exhibition, Lusus, preview on Friday 11th Aug 2023 at 6 pm. Lusus brings together the work of five artists, , , and . This exhibition aims to explore the robust relationships between materiality, human experiences, and the impact the works have on our experience of spaces. Through a range of multi-faceted installations, encompassing painting, sculpture, video, sound, and various other media, the exhibition invites visitors to delve into the artists' distinct explorations of domesticity, environment, cultural heritage, and the physical and metaphysical connections between humans and the material world.
"Lusus" is a Latin word that can be translated as "play," "game," or "sport." Or a deviation from the norm. It conveys a sense of playful exploration and experimentation. In the context of an art exhibition title, "Lusus" suggests that the artists are engaging in a creative and imaginative exploration of materials, inviting viewers to join in the playful discovery of new sensory experiences.
The concept revolves around the exploration of materials and their ability to evoke experiences with visual art across a variety of ideas and influences driving artistic discovery. Each artist's work delves into unique aspects of materiality, offering unique perspectives on the interplay between the tangible and intangible, physical and metaphysical. From the earth-bound cultural heritage quality of McCaughey's installations to the digital exploration of femininity in Gordon's work, from Spearman's joyous encounters with everyday materials to Sorace's distillation of sentiments, and finally, Hopkins' immersive interventions using native plants and human-made structures – all these perspectives converge to create an exhibition that celebrates the power of materials and their ability to shape our perception of the world.

We are recording the names today feom 12 noon today!! Call in to participate in See Hear, an art project by artist, Michael McLoughlin that endeavours to record the names of everyone living in Ennistymon and present them as part of an exhibition in The Courthouse Gallery & Studios this autumn.
Ennistymon is a continuously changing and diverse place that continues to welcome new arrivals to our community seeking rest, refuge and the love of neighbours, friends, and family. This artwork will celebrate this.
