Biddy Early, the Witch of the West

Biddy Early was born in 1798 in Co. Clare.
Her father was a poor farmer. Her mother was known for her herbal cures and thought Biddy everything about them.

As a child, Biddy would often be heard talking to herself. When her mother questioned her about this, she would say that she was talking with the fairies.

Unfortunately, when Biddy was sixteen years old, her mother died of malnutrition. Less than six months after this, her father died of typhus.
Unable to afford the rent, she was forced to leave home. She spent the next couple of years living and working in a poorhouse.
She was often mistreated because of her aloof personality (This does not mean she was not intelligent. She was actually very intelligent).

During her time in the poorhouse, she would frequently walk in to town on market days. It was here that she met her first husband, Pat Malley.

Pat was twice her age and already had a son, Biddy could not provide a dowry, but they made it work.
They lived in a three-room cottage in Feakle, Co. Clare.

Biddy became a widow at twenty-five when Pat died.
As her marriages bare little relevance to the story, I will quickly recount them here.
Biddy's second marriage was to her step-son, John Malley.
He died in 1840 from a liver ailment. Leaving Biddy widowed again at forty-two.

She then married a labourer named Tom Flannery. As usual, Tom eventually died.
At the age of seventy-one, she would marry for the fourth time.
This time to a man in his thirties named Thomas Meaney.
He died a year later of over-consumption of alcohol.

During her lifetime, Biddy became well known for providing cures.
It was said that the line of people waiting outside her house could stretch a quarter of a mile back.

She was a true healing woman, as she did not charge for her services.
(It was said back then that a 7th son of a 7th son, or 7th daughter of a 7th daughter, was born with the ability to cure one type of ailment. This power was unique to them, another 7th son of a,etc. would be born with "the cure" for a different ailment.
But, if they ever charged someone for their help, they would instantly lose their ability.

Biddy was exceedingly more powerful than said people, but it is believed that she adhered to this rule.
If the person that was helped chose by their own free will to reward you, that was ok.

Her main clientele were the poor farmers and peasants.
As they had no money, the gifts they provided would mainly consist of poitín (Irish moonshine) and various agricultural produce such as eggs, milk and bread.

If you came to Biddy looking for help, she would already know who you were and why you came to her.
Speaking was only a formality to put you at ease.
If you mocked her on the way to see her, she would tell you exactly what you said, word for word, and then refuse to help you.

She had a strange bottle filled with a dark liquid which see would look into when someone asked her for advice, or the location of a missing person, etc.

It was said that this bottle was given to her by the faeries. (I have heard a theory that the bottle had no power, it was simply there to put people at ease. Presumably it would have been easier for people to think she had to look in the bottle to know everything about them. The prospect of her being able to tell what they were doing all the time, would have been too terrifying)

When the police came to raid her house, she was waiting outside for them.
As they approached she simply said "wait there" and the men were frozen to the spot, unable to move.
She went about her day leaving the men there for hours.
At the end of the day she said "leave, and never come back here again".
The men ran at full speed away and never returned.

A new young priest came into the parish. He was hell-bent on weeding out herasy.
He preached from the alter about Biddy, condemning her, and warned the parishioners to not go to her seeking help.
When everything continued as normal, the priest decided to take matters into his own hands.
He saddled his horse, and made angrily for Biddy's cottage.
When he was within a few miles of her house, his horse ran into a shallow river and froze in place. He wiped the horse viciously, but it would not move.
When he attempted to dismount, he realised that he was stuck to the saddle.
He remained there all day. He was embarrassed when people asked him what he was doing in the river.

After helping her last client for the night, she told him to tell the priest, as he was passing, that he would be freed if he apologized.

The priest was told this, but refused to apologize.
As the night drew on, he became very cold and uncomfortable.
Finally broken, he called out "I'm sorry, Biddy". In that instant the horse moved again and he was back to normal.

When Biddy was on her death bed, the bishop came to see her.
He offered to forgive her sins and administer last rites, in exchange for her famous bottle.
The bishop told her that he wanted to destroy the bottle, so as to destroy it's evil power.
Biddy laughed and gave it to him freely.

A large crow, high on a tree outside the window, was cawing loudly.

Biddy uttered a few indiscernible words and the crow stopped.
She uttered a few more words, and it died instantly, falling from the tree.

"Can you do that?" she asked the bishop jokingly.

"Of course not!, That is the work of the devil, to hurt and kill."

Biddy uttered a few more words and the crow came back to life instantly, and flew back to its spot on the tree.

There are far more stories about Biddy Early. She helped people everyday for over fifty years.
