Inflammation in the body results in pain, stiffness, depression and weight gain. Many people are totally unaware of the effects trans fats have on the body. Trans fats are lethal to health and performance . Basically, you are poisoning yourself when you eat foods high in trans fats. Crisps , biscuits, buns, pizza, fried foods, milk , processed meats like sausages, popcorn, margarine, fried chicken, battered fish etc, when consumed will inflame and poison your body. So if your regularly suffering from pains, fatigue, stiffness, skin problems, itching and tingling, headaches, irritable bowl , weight gain, depression, start cutting out foods high in toxic trans fats !

Any physical activity that is repeated beyond the bodies capacity to recover adequately will result in damage. This damage will cause muscle adhesions ( knots) , trigger points and stiffness. During immune reactions to flu or cold ( COVID), the muscles hurt due to the inflammation ( cytokines) created by the infection. These muscles can go on hurting for months after infection . Manual therapies like deep massage and acupuncture are awesome to help the muscles recover after a bout of flu.
We live in a world that is proud of its technological advances but there is nothing that compares to the technology of the human being. Each one of us has been given an incredible power and a device to express this power but we don’t get told this. Our world is constantly telling us we are small, weak , vulnerable, victims, etc . Your body is most advanced instrument ever created in the cosmos. The problem is you don’t know how to tune it or play it. Therapies can only assist in helping you understand how to do these two things.When you learn to tune it properly, you can “play”whatever you like. Keep this idea in your awareness today, your body is in your mind, not the other way around. The mind rules . You are not the mind or the body, you are the awareness, the force, the being that operates them. Your are a Devine Spirit. That’s your true identity. What you put into your mind is the most important thing in your life. Positive mind-food will enrich your life, negative mind-food will destroy it. Be careful what beliefs you choose to carry in your mind. The mind is like a parachute, it’s works great when it’s OPEN!
Many therapies use reflex points not unlike acupuncture points to treat pain and dysfunction. Sensitivity or pain in these points can indicate issues in the organs that connect to these reflexes. Chapman’s points are related to the lymphatic system. This system is the bodies immune and drainage mechanism. If the lymphatics get blocked , fluids build up and cause swelling and toxicity. These specific locations can be massaged and /or needled to remove the blockage and restore the body back to health.
Vitamin D deficiency is associated with lower immunity and increases in inflammation. Low immune function and more inflammation is at the root of every health problem. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common. Getting vitamin D into your mouth doesn’t mean it gets absorbed in your body. It might go in one hole and out the other giving you zero benefit! Certain conditions and medications can prevent its absorption. Problems with the liver, gall bladder and intestines can stop you getting the vitamin into your system. The more body fat one has the less vitamin D they will absorb . Alcohol prevents vitamin D absorption!!! Acupuncture can help to increase your chances of using Vitamin D by regulating the proper function of the organs and systems in the body. 💪
Visceral manipulation assesses and treats restrictions within our organ systems. Our organs depend of health movement caused by our breathing to function well. Correcting our breathing and releasing any visceral restrictions can have dramatic effects on out health. Visceral adhesions are a very common cause of back pain, frozen shoulder, knee pain , headaches, neck pain and pelvic problems.
Inflammation is a major component of pain and disease. What you eat determines your levels of inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines are chemicals that are involved in the inflammatory process . We’ve all heard of the term “ cytokine storm” thanks to COVID. Well , the food we eat has a major influence on this mechanism. In fact, an overlooked and extremely important thing to do during this pandemic is to get HEALTHIER and eating better foods while avoiding toxic ones. Your body speaks to you through the sensory nervous system . When something is out of wack it send a signal to get your attention. Most people are in a chronic state of inflammation. It is vital to get your diet right if you suffer from pain, stiffness, depression, anxiety, or any illness.
Head position has dramatic effects on all aspects of health . There are many reasons for forward head syndrome which is why it is so common. Your head is pretty heavy so if it is even a little off center , it’s gonna have negative effects throughout the whole body. It’s obvious that it will cause issues with neck and shoulders but it’s also a major cause of LOW BACK pain. Many people spend countless hours getting therapy for the low back when it’s actually their neck that’s the issue. The body is not a segmented system. It’s a wholistic integrated organism .
Oxygen deprivation is closely related to chronic pain, fibromyalgia, low immune function, reduced sports performance, anxiety, poor sleep quality and host of other health issues. Proper breathing is not that common nowadays. No matter what your health issue , the first physiological assessment has to be your breathing pattern. It is shocking how little people out there are breathing correctly. Your nose is for breathing yet it is rarely used by many. To make matters worse, the current requirement to wear masks is having a terrible effect on people’s breathing patterns. More than ever it is vital to really exercise nasal breathing. You can actually use the mask to your advantage if you keep it off the nose and just cover your mouth. Breathing through the nose boosts immune function , kills bacteria and microbes so there is no need to fear having the mask below the nose. If your a chronic mouth breather then I suggest you tape the mouth at night for a few weeks until the habit of nose breathing is reestablished. When your exercising or training , keep your mouth closed as much as possible. Keep the intensity of your exercise at a level where you can keep your mouth closed. It will take time to get used to it but the benefits are worth the effort. Without proper breathing there can be NO HEALTH.
Pain can be triggered without tissue damage. That’s right, you can have pain without any injury or issue in the site of the symptom. Conversely, you can have significant tissue damage and experience zero pain . Talk about a conundrum! The most common cause of pain is overwhelming negative emotions. If emotions are not addressed and expressed in a healthy way the result can be pain. We can all understand how anger and frustration can lead to a headache or a “ pain in the neck”!. Pain can be triggered the same way we get goosebumps, or when we’re nervous we need to p*e, or excessive sweating when we are stressed. Emotions are governed by our organs in TCM , not the brain. This makes sense when we see how the organs and brain are linked up through the vagus nerve. 80% of the information traveling in the vagus nerve goes to the brain from the organs. 20 % goes from brain to the organs . This 20% takes over when we are in danger. A signal is sent from the brain to the body to get ready for FIGHT or FLIGHT in a moment of danger. Unfortunately, most people are living in the “ danger mode” and don’t even know it. In a way , the organs cannot communicate with the brain as it’s preoccupied with the belief there is a threat happening and so these organs find expression in their related joints and tissues. The liver uses the tendons and ligaments, the kidneys use the knees and low back, the stomach weakens the muscles and makes them ache , the lungs tighten the chest and so on. Each organ governs a positive and negative emotion. In order to process negative emotions that lead to negative thoughts that feed negative behaviors, the first step is to calm the brain down and create a state of safety. This is the ultimate objective of therapy. Only when one feels safe and supported can healing really take place.
The biggest issue to health is our inner emotional state. Our emotions are the root of our wellbeing and physiological health. Negative emotions feed negative thinking which feeds more negative emotions and around we go in an endless cycle of feel like crap until our body gets ill. Negative feelings are responsible for many negative behaviors like addictions and self harming. Negative emotions disrupt sleep and hormone balance. You cannot heal with poor sleep! The key to thinking positive is not by trying to think, it’s choosing to FEEL positive emotions like gratitude. Gratitude , joy, peace and happiness are the most powerful medicines on the planet. You have them at your disposal in every minute. You have the power to choose to be grateful. It’s the easiest state to create within yourself. Chinese medicine has known for centuries that negative feelings cause disease. There are many points to help the body return to a place of peace and harmony .
Fear and pain are very closely related. The brain decides whether to expose your conscious mind to the experience of pain. When the brain decides you are in danger, it causes the body to respond through fight, flee or freeze. This reaction is awesome short term but when it becomes a long term event, then the body starts to crash. This is when we start to feel pain and stiffness. So every time you feel pain , your brain has been triggered by a threat that you may not even be aware of. Weird I know but that’s how it works. The brain uses pain to PROTECT you. We can all understand how the brain pulls our hand away from something extremely hot to protect us but what most don’t know is it will also produce pain to protect you from overwhelming negative emotions like grief, rage, rejection, disapproval, guilt, shame , fear, dread, frustration etc. all emotions have physical effects on the body. Positive emotions have healthy effects , so it’s only common sense that negative emotions are harmful to our health.
Low back pain is one of the biggest health problems in the world and it’s getting worse even though we’ve never had more therapies, surgeries, injections, exercises, ergonomics and so on! The spine is RARELY the problem. MRI scans diagnosing normal aging as degenerative disc disease is fueling an epidemic of chronic pain resulting in procedures with dismal results.
Specific acupuncture points on the back of the body and the front are indicating a problem in the organ associated. When the organ is dysfunctional, these points become painful. This is how our bodies communicate with us . It is extremely common that patients present with back pain that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the back itself. The back is sending the message for the organs inside the body but ends up getting the blame for the pain.
The vagus nerve connects the brain to every organ in your body. This connection is vital for the healthy function of all the internal systems. The organs are literally “talking” to the brain constantly, hence 80% of information is carried up. This is one of the big mechanisms behind acupuncture and manual therapies. The vagus controls inflammation levels and hormone balance in the body. If it is on the fight/flight mode and the brain takes over by reducing the function of the organs for a short term survival mode that goes on too long, then the system starts crashing! We can stimulate and enhance the activity of the vagus to improve, promote and sp*ed up healing.
Acupuncture and manual therapies assist and stimulate the bodies natural way to heal. Therapies can actually revitalize and enhance the mechanisms involved in reducing inflammation, releasing toxins and ramping up the immune system. Treatments can also boost growth hormone while decreasing stress hormones. The effects of regular therapy actually accumulate with each session. Patients can be classified into one of four categories for the amount of treatments that will be needed to get the optimum result. The least amount of session in category A is between 1 and 4, while category D is between 12 and 16. When clients tell me they tried acupuncture before and it didn’t work, it’s usually because they didn’t get the correct amount of sessions for their category to achieve a success.
A healthy spine is essential for the function of the organs and tissues of the entire system. The cord is the connection the brain has to the systems and operating mechanisms. Dysfunction in any organ or tissue will sensitize an area of your spine, which if ignored, can lead to pain. Spinal adjustments, acupuncture and massage not only help the back itself but have massive benefits to the organs as well.

The liver is ESSENTIAL for energy production, recovery from injuries and a thousand other bodily functions. Liver dysfunction is extremely common. Acupuncture and manual medicine are brilliant for boosting function and health of the liver. Problems with your liver manifest in the tendons and ligaments of the body. Fatigue and depression are associated with liver function. The liver controls histamine. Histamine is involved in allergies and immune reactions. The liver controls the inflammatory pathways of the body. Acupuncture has amazing points to boost liver function.
Acupuncture and manual therapies promote and increase the bodies natural healing power. Time frames for recovery depend on many factors like nutrition, sleep quality, hormone balance, and so on. Therapies are also great to increase performance and injury prevention.
The primary dysfunction I see in the clinic is a breathing pattern disorder. Almost everyone I see breaths wrong. They are totally unaware this is happening. As a result , their bodies are in a state of stress. The whole body is controlled by how you breathe. This is especially pertinent these days with mask wearing becoming a normal way of life. Manual therapies and TCM can improve breathing and remove restrictions that prevent proper breath. Breathing correctly is the foundation of health.
Diagnosis determines the results. The more methods the therapist can use for diagnosis and cross referencing, the better the outcome for the client. Manual therapies and TCM use the tongue, pulse, tone of voice, posture, meridian palpation , muscle testing, range of motion tests and organ mobility to make as precise a diagnosis as possible. The tongue is imperative to know what points to needle as well as the patients constitution.
The location of pain is not always where the problem is! Just because your knee hurts or you have a sore back, doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong in those s areas. Ultimately, pain is determined by the brain 100% of the time. Where it decides to “EXPRESS “ it on the body is determined by many factors ! Manual therapists work with pain everyday. Don’t waste time trying to figure it out yourself. The longer you wait to see a therapist , the longer it takes to rectify the problem.
All forms of stress drive up cortisol. Stress accumulates in the body . It can come in the form of physical stress, emotional, mental, chemical, toxins, deficiencies, etc. Most people are either in denial or totally oblivious that their bodies are actually under colossal stress. The body will use pain as it’s first indicator that it’s stressed out. Manual therapies and acupuncture are awesome to help in the recovery from stress.
