Lily McAllister was found on the streets of Cavan as a child and she was charged with begging for alms. She was sent to a local orphanage and put to work on a farm. She didn't like working on the farm so she ran back to the orphanage she was in. At this stage she was 16 years old and deemed too old to stay in the orphanage, and so she was sent to the Magdalene Laundry on Forster Street in Galway city.

Hear more of Lily's story and other women's stories on the HerGalway Walking Tour. If you love women's history, this tour is for you. Book your ticket here 👉 https://bit.ly/3wNVeim and booking in advance is essential 🚺

So I took a trip to Inis Mór a couple of weeks ago. Inis Mór is the biggest of the three Aran Islands off the coast of Co. Galway. I love visiting this island. On the recent trip, I came across these two ruined buildings. I love coming across a ruined building, wondering what it was used for, who owned it, what their life like. I can't wait to get back to Inis Mór ☘️

Below is an 1849 advertisement in a Galway paper which tells us that “A truly lucky vessel, the Seabird” would be ready to take passengers on board as soon as the cargo of yellow corn had been unloaded.

The advert tells us that this ship “will be fitted up in a most commodious manner for the accommodation of passengers”, but in truth, the accommodation consisted of hastily improvised bunks, the lower compartments were places of terrible misery, the ships were invariably overloaded, and the conditions were horrendous.

The average journey was not twenty days but more like six weeks, and bad weather could make this twelve. About twenty per cent of those who sailed perished en route, and sometimes the ships were refused permission to land because of the number of cases of fever on board, causing even more suffering 💀
