Grace VanderWaal - Florets (Live on the Honda Stage at Brooklyn Art Library) 28/10/2018

This girl is just too cute! She's infectious. And a great little singer. I love that she's smack-bang in the eye of stardom, rising along the path of a classic wee pop siren, tv talent shows, tagged for disney and all that nonsense, and yet she's so much herself, it just pours off the screen, she sings like an original, and writes songs like one too. I've obviously been hanging out with kids again- nothing like listening to quirky, passionate, talented teenagers sing :-)

This fella - Eric Avery - is an amazing musician, with such finesse and delicacy in his playing, and such raw simplicity and cultural power in his voice. Tis a strange and gorgeous combination. And what an ambassador for Aboriginal culture!

Lovely cover of this golden oldie :-) Happy Monday folks!

The Good Vibrations of Quantum Field Theories - The Nature of Reality — The Nature of Reality | PBS 10/10/2018

Carrying on from the yoga poem on my wee blog, written for a chant workshop in beautiful catalunya, I found this. See - even the scientists are saying : we are literally made of music!
"The entire universe is made of fields playing a vast, subatomic symphony. Physicists are trying to understand the melody." Happy Wednesday people :-)

Agnes Obel - Aventine (Official Video) 07/10/2018

I love this artist - Agnes Obel - she has a delicate, passionate voice, simple, authentic, and spot on - with lovely harmonies, built in such subtle layers that sometimes you almost miss them. She writes haunting songs, and always weaves a luscious palette of strings and vocals on her records. Well worth a listen! Perfect for a stormy Autumn day on the wild west coast of Europe :-)

Neuroscience and the 'Sanskrit Effect' 06/10/2018

Interesting article on the power of song! It's worth a read :-)

"The power of sound and chanting is becoming widely documented, and even short chants have an energising and healing effect on the body and mind... Interestingly, fifty years ago, a French scientist noted that Christian monks who chanted the Gregorian Chants have exceptional memories"

Neuroscience and the 'Sanskrit Effect' Science shows that chanting improves our brains in unimaginable ways.

Grace VanderWaal performs "I Don't Know My Name" 13/09/2018

A WEE RAMBLE on the TV TALENT SHOW PHENOMENON that GRACES POP MUSIC TODAY: I'm not a huge fan of the whole televised talent show phenomenon, and as a young songwriter and aspiring, 19 year old pop artist, even wrote protest songs in the early days of the 'televised audition.' I remember we used to laugh in the band I was in and refer to the show Pop Stars as 'Pop Tarts.' We wrote a track called 'Pop Music's Dead' in the band - which was a bit epic, with loads of multi - track-laying, stacks of vocals, sampled strings and even a bit of Elvis spun in over it... It sounds normal nowadays for home recording, but this was 20 plus years ago, and all on a 4-Track believe it or not! The band had great potential, and we were 'in talks' with all sorts of record execs in London, but no publishing or records companies would touch us, as we were too 'out there.' I have little interest these days in the dance of the mainstream music business; the business of production companies and TV shows and overly-polished, flash-in-the-pan singing stars. From time to time however, I watch an odd bit of these audition based shows, and even more occasionally, a performance sets me alight in all the ways that music can. This wee video of 12 year old Grace Vanderwaal from New York, playing and singing a song she wrote herself, on a Highfalutin Tv Talent Show blew my ears, and heart wide open. She's vibrant, and talented (of course), but the real wonder is how effortlessly 'in it,' she is. She's star struck and awe struck, and she's still right there IN the song, with all her quirky vocal strengths and vulnerabilities, and all the playful rough edges and vitality of youth, that - in singers today - are so often ironed out before we ever hear of them. I hope they don't polish it out of her! Okay, I'll get off my soap box now! From the wild and windy singing studio, over and out xxM
