Queen of Puck Fair unveiled as preparations continue The 12-year-old was chosen following her entry in the annual writing competition, in which she outlined her favourite memory of the festival – watching the Puck Fair Coronation Parade from the window above the diner with her grandfather, who passed away last year.
Congratulations to Alesha Williams, picked to be the Queen of Puck Fair 2022. From a proud Mom, Dad, Nana & Family. Grandad would be delighted to see she has achieved one of her dreams of becoming Queen of puck.
K-Fest Weekend Special
This month 50 years ago (April 1972), Sean and Kathleen opened the Starlite Takeaway, at a premise formally known at the puck bar.
In what has become its own institution and a place of congregation after the pubs down through the years. Sean, the cook, dressed in his V-neck jumper, shirt and tie, Kathleen in her apron serving those hungry patrons at the counter until the early hours. With help from family members who were always on hand when Sean & Kathleen needed, without who, the Starlite wouldn’t be what it is today.
Long working hours were the norm for Sean and Kathleen. Down through the years there was only 2 days in which the takeaway was closed, good Friday and Christmas Day.
Other the years there have been many staff members who would have worked behind the counter and to this day we are eternally thankful for everything you have done. Maria,Billy, Ger, Noreen, Elmarie, Rose, Jackie, Julie, Denise, Theresa, Acy, Stephanie, Patricia, Joanne, Fiona, Anne, Kathleen Spillane, Mary, Emily.... to name a few.
And who remembers the Arcade games & jukebox in the takeaway which provided hours of entertainment to staff and customers that was supplied by Charlie McBride and sons.
Puck fair in particular was its own family reunion for the Murphy brothers and sisters which wasn’t all work at the takeaway. Fueled up on Barry’s tea or Maxwell house, they were ready for the 3 days of the festival.
Fast forward to 2020 which none of us could have expected, a pandemic which brought the world to nearly a standstill. Sean & Kathleen made a decision that now is the time for a change and relocated the business to the top of the square. The location maybe different, but the STARLITE will always be the STARLITE. Opened in October 2020 at the top of the Square. A new chapter for Sean and Kathleen begun.
The people who come through the doors and the chats that were had was one main of the reasons Sean would never retire. He did what he loved. He lived his life to serve the people of Killorglin for 49 years and wanted that to continue.
So as we mark this milestone in business we remember all those who came through the doors. We continue to drive the business. Sean’s commitment to service, quality of product and most importantly the relationship with the customers is the driving force of our business. Here’s to 50 years in business and many more.
Thank you from Kathleen & Family
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous and safe year ahead.
