University of Limerick students slam college for refusing to reimburse them for cancelled international trip Students at the University of Limerick are outraged over the college’s refusal to refund them "thousands of euro" after an international trip was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Lough Gur is situated between the towns of Herbertstown and Bruff Co.Limerick. It is one of Ireland’s most important archaeological sites. Humans have lived near Lough Gur since 3000 BC and there are many megalithic remains there including Grange Stone Circle (the largest in Ireland), the remains of three Crannogs and a number of ring forts.

Bourchiers castle can also be seen at the lough as well as the ruins of an early Christian church, and the ruins of a Norman castle.

Lough Gur visitor center offers a variety of guided tours showing you some of the most historical sites in the area.

We remember our murdered mayors 100 years on

100 years ago today, the Mayor of Limerick, George Clancy and his predecessor Michael O’Callaghan were both killed by British security forces on March 6th 1921, during the War of Independence.

The Mayor George Clancy, was shot at his home in front of his wife in Castleview Gardens, close to the River Shannon and the city’s famous Treaty stone, by a group of three Royal Irish Constabulary Auxiliaries.

At around the same time, his predecessor as mayor, Michael O'Callaghan, was also shot dead at his home nearby.

Their deaths are attributed to an auxiliary 'death squad', led by an acting Inspector George Montague Nathan, who had been harassing leading political figures and running raids on their homes at that time.

Both men were aged in their early 40s, firm nationalists, Irish speakers, volunteers, and GAA members.

It is unfortunate that because of Covid restrictions, we cannot hold a traditional commeration for these great men, but the Council and Limerick GAA are hosting an online commendation tonight at 8pm on the LimerickGAA page.

I hope that a significant commeration of their sacrifice for Irish freedom will take place at a later date.

Since the end of the Brexit transition period, social media has been flooded with images of empty shelves in British supermarket chains on the island of Ireland.

Many shoppers have struggled to obtain basic produce, as the impact of the UK’s exit from the EU on the Irish consumer has become clear. However, Irish supermarket chains across the island are experiencing no such shortages.

The continued presence of the North in the single market provides a unique opportunity to expand our all-Ireland supply chains. Not only do these result in less red tape and keep profits on the island of Ireland, they are much better for the environment.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of long time party member Michael Parkes, who died unexpectedly earlier today. Michael served as a director of elections, constituency organiser and was a great supporter of Ógra. He will be fondly remembered.
