We are shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Edel Geraghty. Edel was instrumental in setting up the Limerick Women’s Caucus in the initial stages, along with her colleague Yvie Murphy. We may not have ever come together as a group of councillors from all parties and none, if it wasn’t for Edel’s support and guidance. Our formation marked the first official local women’s caucus in the country.

Our deepest sympathies to Edel’s husband and daughters, and all her extended family.
Rest in peace.❤️

Happy from the Limerick Women’s Caucus.
The number of women elected to Limerick City & County Council increased from six in 2014, to eight in 2019. A co-option in 2020 brought the current number of female Councillors to 9 out of 40.
The female population of Limerick City & County is 50.15% at the recent census. However, with only 9 female Councillors out of 40, this is just a 22.5% level of representation by female Councillors.
There have been just two female TDs elected for Limerick constituencies:
• Kate O’Callaghan (1921-23)
• Jan O’Sullivan (1998-2020)
Currently there are two Limerick women in the Oireachtas:

I am delighted to allocate €62,000 in funding to support women councillors establish caucuses in their areas.
Today I met the Limerick Women’s Caucus – the first structure of its kind at local level in Ireland and heard first-hand how all parties and none have worked constructively together as members of their Local Authority.
It is imperative that we increase the number of women in Local Government and, as Minister for Planning and Local Government, I am determined to see a marked increase by 2024.
