Donegal Mountain Rescue Team

DMRT provide an emergency response, remote environment and extreme terrain, search and rescue service for the County of Donegal in Ireland.

The team is comprised completely of volunteers who are on 24 hour call, 365 days of the year. We are tasked out by An Garda Síochána so if there is an emergency please call 112 or 999 directly, this is to ensure an appropriate coordinated response.

At 12:36 hours today, DMRT were tasked by the National Ambulance Service to assist a female who had fallen and sustained a lower leg injury on Errigal Mountain. When the team arrived at the Errigal Carpark, Rescue 118 was also on scene along with the Bunbeg Coast Guard. As the weather conditions worsened, Rescue 118 lowered the paramedic to below the casualty, who made his way up with the Coast Guard to the casualty's location. Rescue 118 then waited while the paramedic stabalised the casualty. After a few attempts, the casualty was successfully moved to a better location so as to be winched up and taken to LUH.

DMRT was stood down at 15:28 hours.

Another successful rescue - our thanks to our colleagues at and and we wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

Our training continues here with the DMRT. Our most recent session was another scenario of a missing person. Scenario training allows us to put all our individual training and techniques into practice and allows the team more and more opportunity to work together to complete the task at hand. This has been invaluable for the integration of our most recent members and has proved extremely worthwhile in utilizing all our skills that we continually work hard to improve.

A huge thanks to Killybegs Common Charity Shop for their incredible donation of €2000 to the team. This money is invaluable to us and we would like to express our sincerest gratitude.

DMRT relies almost exclusively on donations from the public. It's what keeps us equipped with the most advanced equipment, allows us to extend and advance our training and keeps our vehicles on the road. Without these donations we could not exist.

All of us here at Donegal Mountain Rescue are devastated to hear the news from our colleagues in . We wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the family and to all members of the SLMRT at this immeasurably sad and difficult time.

https://www.facebook.com/share/CnbMaV1dF6p7cDNv/

On Tuesday 2nd July 2024 Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team were tasked to the Benbulben forest walk area, where a climber had sustained a serious injury.
Two local climbers were out climbing a gully above the Benbulben Forest Walk when the accident occurred.
The climber, a local man in his forties, slipped while climbing the gully, sustaining a serious head injury. Both climbers were active members of Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team.
15 Mountain Rescue volunteers responded to the call and rushed to the scene. They were accompanied by two ambulances from the National ambulance Service and Members of An Garda Siochána. Irish Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 118 was dispatched from Strandhill to assist in the operation.
A helicopter rescue from the mountain could not be attempted due to the location and prevailing winds but was able to provide extra illumination from the helicopter as the light began to fade. Four paramedics attended the scene alongside mountain rescue personnel and despite their best efforts they could not revive our colleague.
He was lifted onto a stretcher to be lowered off the mountain. The operation to retrieve our colleague was very precarious as the terrain was very steep and the weather started to deteriorate, making conditions very difficult underfoot. A brake rope was deployed on the stretcher to assist with extraction off the mountain. Despite the worsening conditions there was a concerted effort by all team members to bring our friend home.
As a team we are all devastated at the loss of our friend and colleague, for almost decade he was a dedicated member of the team coming to assist those in need. He was compassionate, professional, friendly and always had a big smile wherever you would meet him. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family at what is a very difficult time. We would also like to reassure the public that as we go through this period of mourning that the team is fully operational and ready to respond to anyone who may get into difficulty in the upland areas of Sligo and Leitrim.
Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team wish to thank An Garda Siochána, the National Ambulance Service and Coast Guard Rescue 118 for their assistance in the operation.

To all our dedicated DMRT followers and supporters, as of July 1st of this year, all avenues to donate to the team via Facebook and Instagram will cease.

As we are a voluntary organization who rely almost exclusively on the donations from the public, this is very unfortunate. As such, we would like to bring your attention once again to our iDonate page, the link for which is below and will be available on both our Instagram and pages.

If you do wish to donate to the team, please go to

Our sincerest thanks for all your support, we would not be here without it.

A very warm welcome to our new recruits!

We started on January of this year with a call to anyone who wished to join our team. Over the past 5 months, we have answered emails, organized induction days, spoken on the phone and answered messages to everyone who responded. We saw the result of our efforts on Sunday with our first training session with those that proceeded at our base on Glenveagh National Park .

We are delighted to welcome on to the team a fantastic bunch of people and we look forward to many a training session in the months to come.

Welcome to the Team.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Search Management Training course last weekend. Members from each MRT team, including Donegal Mountain Rescue Team, attended to learn and upskill on topics and actions surrounding the initial response and search tactics.

Well done to everyone involved and another great example of each team continuing to improve and advance the skills involved in being a part of Mountain Rescue.

On Saturday 20th April 2024, DMRT were tasked at 13:24 hours by AGS Galway to Poison Glenn and were put on full stand-by. Once more information was obtained, it was established that there had been a catastrophic accident involving two climbers, one of which had not survived.

Rescue 118 was tasked to the scene as the DMRT hasty team made their way to the rendezvous point. As members of the team approached the casualty's location, Rescue 118 was already on scene and, after a difficult and technical extraction, airlifted the second casualty to Letterkenny Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The team's rope technicians proceeded to set up two complex rope systems in order to recover the remaining casualty. They maneuvered the stretcher back to the RV point where AGS and NAS were waiting.

The team was stood down at 22:59 hours.

Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased.

We wish to express our sincerest thanks to everyone involved in this difficult and hugely technical incident, including Rescue 118 , An Garda Síochána and National Ambulance Service (NAS) .

The following day , Sunday 21st April, the National Ambulance Service tasked DMRT at 18:25 hours to Slieve League to assist a walker who had sustained a lower leg injury.

The casualty in question was swiftly airlifted off the hill and transported to LUH for further treatment. The team were stood down at 19:08 hours.

A very well done and sincere thanks to Killybegs Coast Guard , Rescue 118 and National Ambulance Service (NAS) .

At 13:19 hours on Saturday 13th April, DMRT were tasked by An Garda Siochana to assist a walker who had sustained a lower leg injury on Lough Salt. Using location technology through mobile phone, a hasty team made their way to the casualty's location after meeting some of the walking group at the base of the mountain, where they were waiting for DMRT to arrive. Once on the scene, the hasty team stabilized the leg and sent the remainder of the walking group down the mountain as the weather deteriorated. As the second team made their way to meet and assist the hasty team, they were caught in heavy hail. However, they were able to secure the casualty in the stretcher and proceed to descend the hill. As the weather continued to worsen, the team were forced off the path as it was unsuitable for transporting the stretcher, and had to take several detours to safely transport the casualty down. Callout coordinators at the base of the mountain requested an ambulance and, about 500m from the pump house, the team were met by Pathfinder Paramedic from HSE who was able to administer stronger pain relief to the casualty. The casualty was successfully transported off the hill and taken to hospital for further treatment.

The team stood down at 17:50 .

Our thanks to An Garda Síochána , National Ambulance Service (NAS) and the HSE as always.

The very best of luck to you Amay who is in the Donegal finals of The Rose of Tralee tomorrow! 🌹🌹

31/03/2024

As the bank holiday weekend gets underway, we ask you to take care on our mountains.

A walk and a hike are two very different things. When we head to our mountains (Errigal, Muckish, Sleive League, Lough Salt) we are embarking on a hike for which we need to be prepared.

Correct footwear and waterproofs are essential, as are extra layers, food, water, a hat and gloves, a head torch and a fully charged mobile phone. These things may seem extreme for some, for what seems like a few hours of a walk, but it can be very easy to be caught out and find yourself in a situation you didn't predict. It is better looking at it all than needing it!

There are a huge volume of visitors to our beautiful county this holiday season. Please can we ask that you be very careful on the roads, especially parking around popular hiking areas. Can we also ask you to leave room for emergency vehicles, particularly at Errigal Mountain.

If you do decide to ascend the peaks this Easter break, please think ahead, plan your route, check the weather and leave plenty of the before sunset.

Enjoy our peaks responsibly. They will always be there, so never be afraid to change your mind and turn back if weather conditions deteriorate. We wish you all a very lovely and safe bank holiday.

We will miss them greatly. They were both an asset and an essential part of the group, as well as hugely dedicated to what we do and to the team as a whole.

However, we hope they have an incredible time on their travels and we will keep our fingers crossed that they will come back to us in the future.
