Sean Keating’s classic work ‘Men of the South’ is currently on display at IMMA as part of ‘Self-Determination; A Global Perspective’, depicting a group IRA men lying in wait during the Irish War of Independence.

On loan from our friends at , this is one of ten artworks from the Crawfords Collection currently exhibited at IMMA, others including ‘Samoan Scene’ (1924) by Mary Swanzy, Margaret Clarke’s ‘The Dressmaker’ (1924), and ‘A Race in Hy Brazil’ (1937) by Jack B. Yeats.

Irish realist painter Sean Keating studied under William Orpen at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin. His paintings of the west, the Irish War of Independence and the industrialization of the nation, became synonymous with the artistic representation of Irish identity and the Free State.
