Tennis Tip Friday 🎾

We continue our fortnightly series PLAY WINNING TENNIS, written by Peter Farrell. Peter is a Level 4 coach who works extensively in the Tennis Ireland Coach Education Programme. The series will build into a library of tips that can help make your match play more effective. Today, secrets of success with the drop shot🔥

The drop shot - used to devastating effect by Carlos Alcaraz at this year’s Wimbledon!

WHY?
Use it to tire an opponent, to vary the rhythm of play and to bring a baseliner to the net.

WHEN?
Often played off a short ball (one that lands inside or around the service line area). Playing it off a deep ball is difficult. Even if you play it well, your opponent has lots of time to react, since it is a soft shot travelling a long distance.
Use sparingly for maximum effect.

HOW?
Focus on hitting the ball gently.
Some players make the mistake of attempting to hit it with a lot of slice. To get heavy slice you must swing at the ball, and swinging gives you too much power.
Prepare as you would for a normal groundstroke - “disguise it” – to take your opponent by surprise.

Playing tennis this weekend? Try out a few drop shots! 🎾

Today, the importance of the slice backhand.

SLICE BACKHAND – a crucial shot to master.
The list below of situations where slice is useful might convince you!

RALLY/DEFEND SITUATIONS:
• Incoming ball is very high.
• Incoming ball is very low.
• Incoming ball has a lot of pace.
• Incoming ball is “into the body”.
• Incoming ball is far away.

ATTACK & COUNTERATTACK SITUATIONS:
• Approach shot.
• ‘Changing the pace’ following a fast exchange.
• Drop shot.
• Hitting low bouncing shots to players who like receiving high bouncing shots.
• Hitting slow shots to players who like receiving hard shots.

Notes for this week's local papers:

Finals Days 2023

Lismore Tennis Club recently held our finals day following on from a successful summer of tennis. Although initially a windy afternoon the rain held off and we were treated to some top class tennis. In the Ladies Doubles Finals Grainne & Geraldine faced up to Lisa and Laura. Lisa and Laura stormed to an early lead in the first set taking this set while Grainne & Ger battled back to level the match up by taking the second set. Grainne & Ger went onto win the match but this was a close affair given not one but two sets going to tie breaks! The men's doubles final also proved to be a close affair with Andy & Maurice taking on Eddie & Keith. Andy & Maurice were early out of the blocks taking the first set while Keith and Eddie battled back and took the next two sets and the match with some closely fought games with one deuce lasting nearly 10minutes.
Ahead of the singles finals we held a mixed social tournament for anyone who attended on the day. This proved to be a popular event with Dave & Johanna getting to the final against Maurice & Ger. This was both Maurice & Gers second final of the day and momentum from their previous matches may have stood to them both here as they were worthy winners of the mixed doubles tournament. Refreshments / treats and goodie bags for the kids were the order of the day ahead of the singles finals and these were most welcome treat from - thanks to Andy & Jean for organising along with Avril & Evelyn for collecting and distributing. The Ladies Singles Final saw Ger take on Deirdre - in what must be a club record this was Gers 4th final of the day! There was some great tennis on show from both ladies and conditions weren't straightforward given wind picked up so credit to both. Ger raced into an early lead taking first set but it was to be Deirdres day ultimately as she went on to take the next two sets with a tiebreak again showing how close this final was. The mens final saw Eddie up against Padraig. Eddie raced into an early lead and had a set point against Pádraig however Padraig gallantly battled back from to take the first set. Although Padraig went on to take the second set and the match this was a cracker of a final with the crowd treated to some great rallies. A brief presentation was held with Conor presenting the trophies and prizes. Thanks to Andy & Jean for all their work arranging the day and having courts in tip top shape. Kudos to both
It is worth noting that a lot of the players that got through to this year's finals are recent joiners or "re-joiners" to the game of tennis. This is great to see and each of the participants in the various tournaments held should be proud of your achievements. It is great to see your passion for the game and improvements in your play which will ultimately drive our club forward.

Sponsorship

We were delighted to receive Sponsorship from Cairde Credit Union and we have some new club gear including half zips and polos. In addition we have received funding from Tennis Ireland under their Enioy Tennis for all Grant and have used this towards coaching and our work with the Capeability Group

Juvenile Section

8 of our juveniles headed to the Causeway recently for a battle of West Waterford Tennis finest. Rachel, Eva, Paddy, Jack, Finn, Abby, Fabio & Mar all made the short trip to Abbeyside to represent Lismore. They had a great evening out and were well able to hold their own and more against the best of what Causeway had to offer. Well done to all. Thanks to Andy and Shelly for organising. The juvenile section will be backbone of our club and the recent trip to Causeway following on from successful juvenile coaching and juvenile tournaments held earlier in summer goes to show the strength of the underage section of the club. For a club that is still barely 3 years since reforming this is a remarkable achievement so well done to all juveniles and their parents.
Although the shorter evenings are setting in, given we have lights available at our courts the tennis can continue. For any enquiries on how to use the lights, general membership queries or tour of facilties please get in touch with any committee member or [email protected]
