We are back open tonight!!

Katie Byrne travels to the hillside town in the Lazio region to celebrate its annual Irish Fest — including fish and chips al fresco and an Irish breakfast for 1,000 people.

It’s early morning in the Italian town of Atina. At home in her kitchen, Maria Fusco is pouring out three creamy shots of espresso while arguing with her cousin, Loreto Borza, about who it was that invented the batter burger.

Maria has it on good authority that it was her mother, Concetta. Loreto thinks Maria needs to be careful perpetuating family legends, especially when there’s a journalist in the room…

Family history takes on a deeper significance the week I visit as hundreds of Italians with Irish chipper connections arrive back to the area from which their parents and grandparents emigrated.

Almost 95pc of the chippers we know and love — Fusco’s, Borza’s, Macari’s, Marsella’s and more — descend from the nearby hilltop village of Casalattico in the Lazio region of Italy.

During the year, Casalattico has a population of 524 people. Every year in August, the population swells by thousands as those with a connection to the village travel from all over the world to attend the annual Irish Fest.

Bit of an announcement to make everyone!! 📣

Due to extreme staff shortages there has to be some changes here in the Penguin 🐧

The Moto Grill will be remaining closed for the foreseeable future. It’s very disappointing but we don’t have any other options.

There have been some items taken off our menu. This is due to demand/staff availability and by taking some items away, it makes the rest quicker to prepare. We do apologise if any of your favourites are gone! It’s not forever, just until we get people to cook them again!! 🥲

Finally, our opening hours are going to reduce slightly.

Monday we are closed as usual.
Tuesday- Thursday: 5pm - 10:30pm
Friday & Saturday: 4pm- 10:30pm
Sunday: 5pm - 10:30pm

The only way we can return to our regular service is if we get more staff. If you know anybody looking for work, with experience in a fast paced, food environment let them know!! Send in your cv!
