O’Hart new Chairman of Connacht Council,
Lynch new secretary & Kilroe new Treasurer
Sligo’s Ronan O’Hart is the new chair of Connacht Athletics after his election at a well attended AGM on Zoom on Thursday night.
O’Hart comes from an athletics blue blood family as his father Michael is a well known starter and national technical official lecturer and served as Secretary of the Connacht Council in the mid 1990s, while his sister Keara is a former multiple national sprints champion.
The Sligo man was an international referee at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA and refereed the Pole Vault final where Mondo Duplantis set the current world record.
He has also been appointed for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in 2023 and the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul in March.
O’Hart replaces Brian Bruton (GCH) who has served in the role since 2017.
Well known Galway jumps coach and former top class athlete Seamus Lynch (GCH) was elected as the new secretary replacing Amanda Hynes (Swinford) who steps down from the role she has served in since 2011.
Lynch too comes from good stock as his mother Susan was a former Secretary of Kerry Co Board in the 1990s.
Siobhan Kilroe (Suck Valley) was elected as the new Treasurer replacing Ann McHugh (Sligo) who has served in the role since 2019.
Kilroe, mother of International 400m runner Hollie who placed in the top 8 in the 400m at the European Youth Olympics in Slovakia last August, is a highly successful business woman and was one of the organisers of the successful Connacht Cross Country Championships in Roscommon Race Course in October.
Pierce O’Callaghan (Tuam) was returned as PRO as was Mary Barret (Loughrea) as vice chair and Denise Roddy (Castlebar) was elected assistant secretary.
Mary Barrett and Iain Shaw (Athenry) were appointed Child Welfare Officers.
Nearly 40 clubs were represented at the AGM and recognition was given to the athletes of the province who reigned supreme at so many National Championships throughout the 2022 season.

Motions passed:
That the Western Region Children's Games for under 9's, 10's and 11's be expanded to include an individual competition and that the first three competitors in county championships be allowed to compete in the Western Region Games, whether or not they have partners.
If approved the proposal would encourage good athletes who do not have partners, to persevere in the sport. There is a precedent for such an approach as cross country championships cover team and individual competitions.
Proposed by Castlebar
That the Connacht Council recognise the authority of the Mayo County Board competition secretary over Mayo County club secretaries regarding entries from Mayo into the Connacht Championships when requested to do so.
Motion from Mayo County Board:
Where more than eight athletes are entered for a Connacht Cross Country Championships, Club A & B Teams do not have to be declared in advance
Medals to be awarded to first 12 athletes in Connacht CC Championships
From U14 upwards, a club with eight athletes finishing constitutes two teams
All from Tuam AC
