This Thursday 30th May in Dunmore ....
Have your say on Ireland’s first draft spatial plan for offshore wind energy. The South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP) identifies a number of proposed areas for future offshore wind deployment off the south coast.
Come along to the Waterford drop-in events on 30 May in Dunmore East at 11am and An Rinn at 6pm.
Further details available at https://bit.ly/3KjrWLP
Government has plans to place over 330 mountain high turbines off the Waterford and Wexford coastlines (Cork got away free). Within the recently published draft south coast DMAP, the nearest site, and earmarked for earliest development, is site A with 60 turbines planned; the closest just 12.5km off Tramore and the Copper Coast. Before government changed to a 'plan led' approach to offshore renewable energy in March 2023, this site will be more familiar to people in Tramore and coastal communities as the Energia North Celtic Sea windfarm project.
Anyone in the Tramore/ Copper Coast area will remember the survey ship sitting offshore over the summer and autumn of 2022. Geotechnical and geophysical surveys are complete and we believe the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) have procured the survey data. This will allow a fast-track approach and reveals a desperate attempt by our current government to get anything at all in the water before 2030. While this has been openly denied by senior department officials at a recent consultation event, sources revealed that the Energia site was the preferred DECC option ever before any public consultation took place on the south coast DMAP.
There is no need to place turbines so big, so close to shore. We are lucky to have relatively shallow water off the south east coast and we can build windfarms at site B, C and D. Bottom fixed turbines are being placed in water up to 75 meters deep 60km off the Scottish coast so there is no reason why it can't happen here. This is an effort by government to build close to shore, reduce developer capital costs, and support the narrative that offshore wind is cheap. It is not and consumers will most likely see an increase in energy bills due profit demands by energy companies/ pension funds and the massive investment required by the state to upgrade our grid in order to distribute a volatile and unreliable energy source.
Waterford deserves better and we should protect our coastline from exploitation by our own government and international energy companies. Remember that community benefit funds (contribution based on energy generated) will be available no matter how far away turbines are located. That should keep the money grabbers happy.
The attached image shows what turbines will look like at 12.5km, 14.5km and 16.5km from the coast. We are asking for the removal of site A from the draft south coast DMAP and to keep any offshore renewable energy infrastructure at least 22km from our coastline.
Please share this link where you can and support our 22km campaign.
