😕Can all Dental Gaps be closed by Dental Braces(Orthodontic treatment)?
Answer is 'mostly yes, but sometimes NO'--. "Do you have gaps between your teeth? In many patients this can be closed with But did you know there are five common situations where closing the gap with dental braces is not possible or dental braces alone will not be enough to close the space.
Here are five( and one bonus) common cases where in Dental Braces may not be the only answer. -
1- Missing permanent Teeth- if you have one or more missing permanent Teeth. Closing the gaps will not resolve your dental gaps. As there is something called as Bolton's tooth material harmony. Presence of Missing teeth hampers this dental balance resulting in imbalance of tooth material. Replacing of missing teeth may be needed along with orthodontic treatment.
2- Skeletal imbalance- if you jaws are also in imbalance. Then mere closing of the gaps can result in improper dental contacts leading to damage to the tooth or gum health. A surgical and Orthodontic combination or tooth removal and Orthodontic treatment combination approach may be needed.
3- Deep overbite . - overclosure of teeth. Some amount of vertical distance is needed between your upper and lower teeth. Lack of this can result in Deep bite. This can traumatize the teeth.
4- Other Dental habits- habits like tongue thrusting can lead to reopening of gaps. And unstable results( reopening of gaps). This means first the habit needs correction. .
5- Protruding upper and lower teeth if both upper and lower teeth are jetting out, both the jaws will need treatment , only one jaw cannot be treated. Based on the the jaw relation and clinical examination your Orthodontist decides what's best for you. .
6-Poor Gum health- would mean the teeth done have good gum and bone support this can cause dental loosening. To start the treatment first you need healthy gums. 🤷Why does Orthodontic treatment take time ? 6 reasons as to why :
"Most dental treatments are completed in one or two appointments. In cases of dental implants it can take longer. But Orthodontic treatment takes longer than all.
Why is that? Let's learn why -
1-Movement of teeth is not as simple as moving an object from point a to point b . Although physics and mechanics is at the core of the orthodontic tooth movement.
2- We are dealing with living organs . The parts of our body that hav life in them.
3- So abrupt movement can lead to damage to the blood supply leading to situations like discolored black teeth( nonvital teeth) , tooth with excess bone loss , in rare cases hollowing of teeth on the inside. All these hamper the final results. These unpleasant situation may occur even when moderate forces are applied!
4-Movement of teeth from one place to another requires simultaneous bone deposition and resorption. Without which teeth cannot be moved. This happens in cycles and a little everyday. That takes a while to be clinically visible.
5-excess force is not synonymous to fast Orthodontic treatment. Infact forces more than optimal will lead to something called as undermining resorption of bone. Which infact lead sto slowing of tooth movement.
6- movement of all of the tooth, teeth have different parts the ones we see are called crowns the ones in the gums and the bones are referred to as roots. The tooth needs to move in the root area along with the crown only then a tooth is said to have bodily moved. So next time you ask your Orthodontist how many more months of Braceswear do I need.
