Microplastics in Our Blood: New NEJM Study Links Them to Higher Cardiovascular Risk

A groundbreaking study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine sheds new light on the potential health risks posed by microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs). Titled "Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events," the study explores the association between these tiny particles and increased cardiovascular events in humans—a connection previously hypothesized but not confirmed in clinical settings.
The study involved a meticulous examination of carotid artery plaques from patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy, a surgical procedure to remove plaque from the carotid artery to prevent stroke. Researchers utilized advanced techniques such as pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, stable isotope analysis, and electron microscopy to detect and analyze the presence of MNPs within the excised plaques.
The findings are alarming: microplastics, specifically polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride, were detected in a significant proportion of the samples. Polyethylene was present in 58.4% of the patients, while 12.1% had traces of polyvinyl chloride. These particles were not merely passive observers; electron microscopy revealed that they engaged actively within the plaques, often surrounded by inflammation-inducing macrophages.
Most notably, the study established a direct correlation between the presence of MNPs in atheromas and an increased risk of serious cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction, stroke, or death. Patients with MNPs in their plaques were over four times more likely to suffer from these outcomes compared to those without MNPs.
This study marks a significant step forward in understanding how environmental pollutants like microplastics contribute to cardiovascular disease. The implications are profound, suggesting that the pervasive pollution problem is not only an environmental concern but a direct human health hazard as well.
