The Health Benefits of Seeds – Why You Need to Eat Them

Often neglected for their much more glamorous cousins – nuts, seeds need to be a part of everyone’s diet. Dense in nutrients, they provide you with complex carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, and plenty of energy! That’s not all.

Here’s why you should incorporate it in your diet today:

They are a good source of dietary fiber, which slows the rate of digestion and keeps your digestive system on track.
They provide you with good fats, which nourish the blood cells and help maintain brain function.
Along with nuts, they reduce the levels of inflammation in the body, which staves off ageing and reduces the risk of heart disease.
They contain plant sterols, that help keep cholesterol levels in check and reduce the risk of cancer.
They are rich in trace minerals like selenium, magnesium, copper and zinc, which is required by our bodies.
Over time and consumed regularly, seeds can help prevent weight gain.

CHIA SEEDS

This seed that has been around to power Aztec armies is super rich in fiber. The fiber in chia seeds isn’t your regular kind; it swells to form a gel when it mixes with digestive liquids in the gut. This leads to a feeling of satiety and improves blood sugar control. It is high in omega-3 fatty acids and offers strong antioxidant activity.
Nutritional value: One tablespoon has 60 calories with 3 gm protein, 3 gm fat and 5 gm carbs.

What you can do: Sprinkle liberally on your cereal, curd, raita and salads.

PUMPKIN SEEDS

Halloween’s around the corner, but you don’t need to wait for the spooky October fest to add these nutty seeds to your diet. Known as pepitas in Spanish, pumpkin seeds have high levels of unsaturated fats, which keep your body functioning like a well-oiled machine. The seeds contain iron, which helps maintain high energy levels, along with magnesium, testosterone-boosting zinc and vitamin K.

Nutritional Value: One tablespoon has 47 calories with 2 gm protein, 4 gm fat and 1.5 gm carbs.

What you can do: Roasted and sprinkled with spices such as pepper and paprika, pumpkin seeds are perfect for a snack.

H**P SEEDS

H**p seeds provide extremely high quality plant protein to the muscles. They are among the few vegetarian sources of complete protein, containing all 20 amino acids that are vital to build muscle. The seeds are high in vital minerals such as energy-boosting iron, bone-building calcium, and magnesium. They also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Nutritional value: One tablespoon has 57 calories with 3 gm protein, 4 gm fat and 1 gm carbs.

What you can do: Add them to everything – cereals, shakes, soups and salads.

FLAX SEEDS

The nutty flax, one of the first varieties that shone the spotlight on seeds, is one of the best dietary sources of soluble fiber. It helps slow down digestion, translating into satiety and blood sugar regulation. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which reduces inflammation, and lignans, which can help prevent cancer.

Nutritional value: One tablespoon has 37 calories with 1 gm protein, 3 gm fat and 2 gm carbs.

What you can do: apart from adding to soups, salads and raita for some crunch, try replacing one part butter with three parts ground flaxseed in baked goods.

SUNFLOWER SEEDS

The inexpensive sunflower seeds are packed with good fats, selenium, copper and antioxidant-rich vitamin E, all of which promote better heart health and avert inflammation. The high levels of vitamin E can improve recovery after exercise as it reduces training-induced oxidative stress in the body. They are also rich in folate, a nutrient that’s vital for women. Also rich in fiber, it keeps you satiated for longer.

Nutritional value: One tablespoon has 51 calories with 2 gm protein, 4.5 gm fat and 2 gm carbs.

What you can do: Add it to anything, cereal, salad, sandwich fillings or even smoothies.

SESAME SEEDS

Often spotted on burger and hot dog buns, sesame seeds deserve more than a random sprinkling. They are a good dairy-free source of calcium, which is essential for building stronger bones and ensuring healthy muscles function. They also contain copper, which is needed for numerous enzymatic reactions in the body. Black sesame seeds offer greater antioxidant power than the regular off-white kind.

Nutritional value: One tablespoon has 51 calories with 2 gm protein, 4.5 gm fat 4.5 gm fat and 2 gm carbs.

What you can do: Top your salads, soups, and cooked vegetables with it. You can even add it to Dalia and sandwich fillings.

Chia, h**p and flax seeds may have attained superfood status but that’s no reason to neglect the humble pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds. Like with all foods, focusing on only one variant won’t help. Make sure you rotate your seeds, and aim to consume about 42-45 gm or 3 tablespoons of mixed seeds daily.

Seeds: Seeds are loaded with Fiber and proteins being low in calories and rich in multiple nutrients such as vitamins, iron, and omega 3 essential fatty acids. Few seeds that can be included in the diet include Pumpkin Seeds, flaxseeds, Quinoa Seeds, chia seeds, and sesame seeds that actually help in burning the fat and provide a feeling of fullness for longer hours of time. Fruits: Fruits are Nature’s low caloric readymade snacks packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and many other nutrients. They help in burning fat, improving medical issues, such as constipation, diabetes, hypertension, and heart diseases. Fruits such as grapefruit, plums, apples, berries, apricots, kiwi, melons, banana, and avocados. Many people trying to lose weight avoid bananas due to its high sugar and calorie content whereas bananas are also more nutrient-dense and rich in potassium, magnesium, manganese, fiber, vitamin A, Vitamin B6, vitamin C, and various antioxidants.
Fat burning foods & fruitsVegetables: There are some healthy vegetables that have natural belly fat burning abilities and consuming them can help you melt away that fat from your abdomen and achieve your goals naturally. Animal Protein: Eggs are an excellent source of protein and can help control appetite thus a very good fat burner, also they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients important to health. Fish is another healthy animal protein that helps you to burn fat and contains omega -3 fatty acids. Salmon, sardines are a few healthy types of fish that one can consume.

Natural Herbs and Juices: Turmeric – An orange root is a powerful fat fighter because it’s more difficult for your body to lose weight when you are fighting off the inflammation, thus adding turmeric to your diet helps to achieve your weight loss goals. Cinnamon is another powerful antioxidant herb that improves metabolism and stabilizes blood sugars and thus curbs the hunger cravings. A pinch of cinnamon powder can be added to smoothies, shakes, and milk with cereals. Apple cider vinegar also is often seen to be added for enhanced fat loss in the diet.

Herbal Tea: Green Tea has been seen to boost metabolism, block the creation of new fat cells and speed the release of fat from the cells, basically due to their catechin levels, therefore 2-3 cups of green tea per day are recommended for effective fat loss.

Certain foods can help us burn fat and lose weight, however, it is also important to remember that fat burning foods must be a part of a healthy diet overall. Also, it is important to indulge oneself in any kind of physical activity to burn fat that also helps to boost the metabolic rate of the body.

A healthy person is not only someone who is disease-free but also who is physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially active or healthy. If we talk about health, it is important to maintain all these four aspects and healthy body weight. Maintaining healthy body weight is not a short term goal but it is a long term goal, which can be achieved by not only controlling the diet but also by making lifestyle changes at the same time. While considering the diet lose weight, we should not be doing these mistakes. Keeping in mind that more and more people are getting involved in diet and lifestyle changes, many options are available to achieve the same. One needs to keep in mind that we need to choose wisely from the options available, which is not only feasible but also can be done in the long run and helps to sustain a healthy weight.

There are certain things that we need to keep in mind while trying to lose weight, you must avoid these mistakes during weight loss:

EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT: No individual is the same in terms of body composition, therefore we need to choose what is best for us. One should not do something only because his/her friend or family member is doing it. Different bodies respond to different diet patterns.

MAKE A PLAN OF ACTION: Before starting a regime, one should look for both pros and cons and should rule out things which are practically impossible and opt for the feasible one.

CONSULT AN EXPERT: One should always consult with an Expert to get guidance in losing weight as it is a safe way to lose weight. One should not follow anything and everything blindly as there are little things that need to be taken during a weight loss journey.

KEEP IN MIND YOUR MEDICAL CONDITION: In order to lose weight, one should never compromise on medical conditions. Take both the things hand in hand for better outcomes. Whenever you are consulting a healthcare coach, one should always discuss all the medical conditions in detail, get the all required blood test done, and should never hide anything.

DO NOT STARVE: One should never starve in order to lose weight. In order to lose weight, manage your food intake instead of starving yourself as it can slow down your metabolism.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Nothing alone works wonders, if you will plan a diet and do a physical activity together, you will get better results. Choose whatever suits you and what you can continue in the long run. You can choose from cycling, aerobics, brisk walk, yoga, swimming, etc, whatever is feasible for you and do it for at least 30-45 minutes 5 days a week.

EAT A BALANCED DIET: When on a diet plan, one should always include micro as well as macronutrients in a balanced amount to achieve a healthy weight loss and which should not result in malnutrition. Sometimes a deficiency of micronutrients like Omega 3, Omega 6, Vitamin B12, etc can also make losing weight a tough task. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. Also, eat whole grains like quinoa, barley, oats, whole wheat, etc in your diet. Are you following a Personalised Balanced Diet as per your Body type? If not start this from today for better weight loss results.

EAT SMALL FREQUENT MEALS: To achieve weight loss, divide your meals through 5-6 times in a day instead of having 3 large meals. Eating small frequent meals not only improves your digestion but also helps in improving your metabolism. Avoid taking late dinners, in case you have to take a late dinner always take care of your portion size.

SLEEP WELL: It is important to have 6-8 hours of sleep every day as it helps to boost up the metabolism which in turn helps in weight loss and also manages your stress levels.

KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED: Not only eating well is important but keeping yourself hydrated and having 10-12 glasses throughout the day is also important. It is also important to have liquids throughout the day and to avoid having it in one go as it can lead to water retention and gastric discomfort.
Along with these things, you should also keep in mind that all fats are not bad, the one in nuts and seeds is healthy if consumed in the right amount. Sugar or sweeteners should also be taken into consideration, if somebody cannot avoid sugars completely you can use sweeteners like natural stevia that can be taken in moderation. You must avoid sugars during weight loss.

Portion size is very important, always control your portion size and you should include variety in your plates. Never suppress your cravings, in case you are craving for any specific food item always look for a healthy choice and have it in a small quantity. You need to make a balance between everything and enjoy whatever you are eating. Eating healthy is not always boring.

Losing weight is no magic pill especially with Medical issues, it is a tedious task that requires both hard work and patience. Whenever somebody decides to lose weight it can be because of the physical appearance or body image and sometimes if a person is passionate about health he/she wants to remain fit.

Weight loss requires a balance between diet plan and physical activity. At times despite hard work weight loss is slow or not as per one’s desire, in such cases, it is important to analyze the factors which result in the same.

Sometimes one doesn’t have any medical history but you cannot neglect the fact that because of some underlying medical condition the results may vary. There are certain medical issues that can make losing weight a tough nut to crack.

HORMONAL IMBALANCE: If there is a hormonal imbalance in the body, it can lead to weight gain and if not taken care of losing weight is very difficult then a normal healthy individual. Like in the case of PCOS, hypothyroidism, etc. Hormonal imbalance majorly affects women as throughout their lifespan be it during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, they go through major hormonal changes.

INSULIN RESISTANCE: If a person has insulin resistance in the body, it affects glucose metabolism in the body which in turn makes it difficult to shed the extra kilos from the body. Like in the case of Diabetes.

SLOW METABOLISM: Metabolism influences one’s basic need for the energy required to digest food, water, physical activity which in turn can affect losing weight with medical issues. If the metabolism is slow there is slow or no weight loss.

HIGH CHOLESTEROL LEVELS/FATTY LIVER: High cholesterol levels such as LDL i.e., the bad cholesterol, triglycerides can lead to heart diseases and fatty liver also affects fat metabolism which in turn can lead to many underlying conditions which inturn affects weight loss.

STRESS: Stress, anxiety can increase the production of the hormone cortisol which can lead to fat deposition around the waist and abdomen. In cases where stress is constant, losing inches is a challenge.

EMOTIONAL EATING: Due to emotional disturbance and mood swings some people tend to do emotional eating, which in turn results in weight gain. If you would crib over the diet plan you can never get the desired results.
Manage your medical issues with a Personalized Diet Plan, customized as per your body type.

At times there are many other factors that can ruin your hard work like anxiety or depression pills, insulin injections, painkiller medicines, etc. These are some underlying factors or medical issues that make weight loss difficult.

Many times we are giving our best, following the diet plan, doing physical exercises as well but weight loss becomes tough, in such cases, there can be an underlying medical issue which we need to identify and work on. Sometimes the problems are small and we don’t even notice it like stress both physical and mental. Always enjoy your weight loss journey and take the guidance of a healthcare professional to make the journey fruitful and sustainable.
