Let's know about AMH......

AMH ( anti mullerian hormone) is a gold standard BLOOD test in assessing FERTILITY ( ovarian reserve) of a female.
- also known as MIS ( Mullerian inhibiting substance)
- Normal AMH level is 1-4 ng/ml
-AMH tells us about the NUMBER of EGGS ( quantity) but not about the quality of eggs of a female.
- AMH DOES NOT alter with phases of menstrual cycle, hence can be done at any time in a menstrual cycle
- HIGH AMH is seen in PCOS and s*x cord stromal tumour patients
- LOW AMH indicates a low ovarian reserve ( LOW EGG COUNT) Which means a patient has a shorter fertility period left. Needs to conceive soon or freeze the eggs soon whichever is suitable
- factors DECREASING AMH
1. Increasing age
2. Drugs like OCP ( contraceptive pills), metformin, clomiphene citrate decreases AMH
Drugs like GNRH agonist increases AMH initially later decreases AMH
3. Any OVARIAN SURGERY
4. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy
- Drugs increasing AMH DHEA and Vitamin D

The picture below shows clinical implications of AMH
