Lumbar Spine Radiculopathy

TESTS AND MEASURES

• Algorithm for examination of the lumbar spine
• FABER test
• Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ)
• Lower extremity neurologic screen (dermatome,myotome, reflexes)
• Lower extremity screening examination
• Lower limb nerve tension test
• Muscle length testing, including the hamstrings, hip flexors, and calf muscles
• Passive physiologic intervertebral mobility (PPIVM) testing
• Patella, Achilles, hamstring reflexes
• Postural examination
• Prone instability test
• Quadrant test
• Radicular pattern
• Repeated movement testing
• Slump test

Rehabilitation :

• Rest
• Joint manipulation to the thoracic and lumbar spine in theabsence of red flags
• Lower-extremity distraction and traction to relieve nerve
compression
• Address pain

FUNCTIONAL GOALS
• Patient will be able to:
○ Sit with neutral lumbar spine posture for > 30 minutes with0/10 pain rating.
○ Sit at work station and perform computer work for 45 minuteswith 0/10 pain rating.
○ Rotate lumbar spine 25 degrees so as to reach into the back
seat in the car with 0/10 pain rating in the lowerextremity.
