Most of us are aware that there are a large number of individuals and institutions spread over throughout the country serving their fellowmen, under very difficult conditions in their self chosen task of acting as good Samaritans. About 24th Mahaveer Awardee - In the field of Education
The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation recognised the selfless services done by Mahila Abhivruddhi Matthu Samraksahna Samsthé (MASS), in Belgaum, Karnataka and presented the 24th Mahaveer Awards, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 10 Lakhs, a citation and a memento.
Sitavva Jodatti founded MASS in 1997 to empower Devadasis and provide them with support. The organisation has grown since then and has taken up various projects to help former devadasis, Dalit women, and their families. Today, MASS has 17 permanent staff, 55 part-time volunteers, and over 3,000 members. They have successfully run multiple programmes for Devadasi empowerment as well as education of their children. Their part-time staff provides free tuition for children in various villages in Belgaum district, and also offers guidance for competitive exams. Along with this they also run legal counseling sessions where they try to solve various family disputes outside of court by charging minimal fees. MASS has not only shaped a life of former Devadasis but also the Dalit community in Belgaum district.
Sitavva’s earnest hard work and her irrefutable dedication to the betterment of Devadasi and Dalit women is meritorious. Her strive for reformation has paid off. MASS has accomplished total removal of the Devdasi system from Belgaum district.

About 25th Mahaveer Awardee - In the field of Non-Violence & Vegetarianism - People for Animals, Sirohi
The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation recognised the selfless services done by PFA,Sirohi, in the Thar desert of Rajasthan and presented the 25th Mahaveer Awards. PFA was honoured by presenting a cash prize of Rs. 10 Lakhs, a citation and a memento.
For the past 20 years, People For Animals has been working in Sirohi – 400 kilometres away from the state’s capital, Jaipur – to build a first-of-its-kind camel rescue shelter home in India for camels injured on the streets, and those saved from being sent to the slaughterhouses. Several camels, like many other animals, get smuggled and slaughtered inhumanely and unlawfully. About 544 camels from different areas of Rajasthan that were being transported to Delhi and Hyderabad were saved by the NGO from being slaughtered.
“After the rescue, we found that 90 percent of the camels were sick. They were dehydrated and starved with their ribs showing, and their hooves were damaged due to the long walk of over 800 miles. They were not given enough food or water during the journey. All of the camels were severely injured as a result of resting their massive bodies on hard surfaces rather than the soft sand that they are accustomed to. The unattended wounds had become septic, with maggots eating away at their living tissues. There were also pregnant camels, calves, and lactating ones,” Late Shri Amit Deol, former Secretary of PFA informed Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation during the visit.
Currently, PFA provides regular vaccination against major camel diseases as well as care for injured and abandoned camels. PFA not only treats sick or injured camels, but also educate owners on proper care and install reflectors on camel carts to reduce the risk of nighttime road accidents.
PFA has organised 204 camps, treated over 17,000 animals, conducted 898 surgical procedures, and performed 4,571 cases of fertility treatments and vaccinations. 3.84 lakh animals benefited.

The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation recognised the selfless services done by Dr.Abhay Bang and Dr.Rani Bang in the remote tribal regions of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra and presented the 24th Mahaveer Awards. The couple was honoured by presenting a cash prize of Rs. 10 Lakhs, a citation and a memento.
Having completed a masters in public health in the USA at Johns Hopkins University, Abhay and Rani Bang chose Gadchiroli, one of the poorest and most rural parts of Maharashtra to set up a non-profit organisation called SEARCH (Society For Education, Action and Research In Community Health) in 1985.
They have been providing patient care for tribal patients at SEARCH Hospital with the aim to achieve 'Arogya-Swarajya'. The rates for services and medicines at SEARCH Hospital are lower compared to those of private medical facilities elsewhere. Even rural and tribal patients in need from Gadchiroli district receive medical services at reduced rates. Tribal patients from Dhanora and and Etapalli talukas, patients referred by the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) at SEARCH, and spine patients are also served at significantly reduced rates.
About 25th Mahaveer Awardee - In the field of Education - Shri Sathyanarayanan Mundayoor
Satyanarayan Mundayoor or Uncle Moosa – how children call him – has spent more than 32 years in the North East India helming affordable education to all and reading movements.
In 1979, Kerala-born Uncle Moosa quit his secure government job in the income tax department in Mumbai to foray into a life that’s not just about money. He was keen to build up reading habits among children. He would carry books in trunks using tattered state transport buses to reach the remote areas where tribal families live.
In 2007, in collaboration with the Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children (AWIC) and the Vivekananda Trust, a gift of children’s’ books and magazines became the first library as part of the Lohit Youth Library Movement in the government town of Tezu.
So far, Uncle Moosa has established 13 bamboosa libraries in remote areas like Wakro, Chongkham, Lathaw and Anjaw. These libraries are vast and boast of more than 10,000 books raging from the works of Roald Dahl and Ruskin Bond to Amar Chitra Katha. These libraries turn into a hub of activities that include story-telling, quizzes, booking readings, and enactments.
He started a home library movement entrusting books to volunteers who in turn distribute books to children.
Uncle Moosa has also written a children’s book in Malayalam on folk heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
Uncle Moosa’s extraordinary efforts in reforming education in the northeast were recognised by the government and he has now been conferred with a Padma Shri Award, the fourth highest civilian honour.
