Meningococcemia is caused by a bacteria known as Neisseria meningitides which stays in the upper respiratory tract and is the same bacteria that causes meningitis.

The difference between meningococcemia and meningitis is that when the infection affects the brain and spinal cord it is meningitis, but when it stays in the blood it is meningococcemia.

Children who are under 4 years of age, those who recently moved to a new living situation or have been in contact with someone who has the disease are most likely to develop the condition.

Your doctor may advise you to take prophylactic or get vaccinated.

In the early stage, symptoms include:
1. Fever
2. Small spot rashes
3. Irritability
4. Headache
5. Nausea

As it progresses, serious symptoms may develop that includes blood clots and bleeding patches under the skin

Meningococcemia is diagnosed through blood culture to check if bacteria are present. It can also be diagnosed by cerebrospinal fluid culture through a lumbar puncture.

Other tests include a urine culture, cbc, and clotting factor tests.

Treatment of meningococcemia needs immediate action. You should be hospitalized and kept in isolation room.

Antibiotics are given intravenously to fight the infection. Other treatments depend on the symptoms developed.

Meningococcemia can lead to bleeding disorders, platelet replacement therapy is needed.

Complications include bleeding disorders and meningitis which can be fatal.

To prevent meningococcemia, healthy hygiene which includes washing hands and covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing decreases the risk of infection.

If you are already in contact with a person who is infected, your doctor may give you antibiotics to reduce the risk of acquiring the disease.

Vaccination may also be recommended.

Early ambulation is one of the most crucial things elderly can do after surgery to prevent postoperative complications.

Walking is a low intensity activity which is ideal for elderly who are recovering from a surgery or any other hospitalization, and it doesn't require any special equipment and is not harmful on the joints and back.

Benefits of early ambulation postoperatively:

⁃ Walking promotes blood flow while maintaining normal breathing patterns
⁃ Ambulation stimulates good circulation which helps stop developing stroke causing blood clots
⁃ Walking aids in faster wound healing as it improves blood flow throughout the body
⁃ Walking improves muscle tone and strength especially in the abdomen and ankles
⁃ Ambulation helps seniors with posture and balance
⁃ Early ambulation can help elderly increase appetite after surgery
⁃ Walking improves patients feelings of independence, mood and self esteem
⁃ Patients who practice early ambulation are usually discharged sooner

Problems that can occur when there is no ambulation

⁃ Pressure ulcers are much more common when patients are stationary for a long periods of time
⁃ Patients are more susceptible to urinary incontinence and infection
⁃ When a person's bones doesn't bear weight they lose minerals which can lead to osteoporosis
⁃ Patients who do not walk experience more stress
⁃ They can develop venous stasis and deep vein thrombosis
⁃ Not walking after surgery can lead to higher risk of lung problems and pneumonia to elderly, it can also decreases their ability to fight infections

Elderly patients need to keep moving, it may seem like a simple thing, but a quick walk can help prevent many serious problems.

5 Benefits of Exercise among Elderly

1. Live longer

According to the World Health Organization, living a sedentary lifestyle is one of 10 leading causes of death and disability. Even gentle, regular exercise such as walking or swimming can improve and increase lifespan by around three to five years.

2. Prevent falls

Improving muscle strength and bone density can be helpful in reducing the risk of falls as it can also improve balance. Activities of daily living can be a form of exercise such as walking or jogging which can contribute increasing the strength of bones and reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures. Exercise in the elderly improves functional reach and balance and reduced participants' fear of falling as per the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

3. Reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases

Regular cardiovascular exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling or light housework – anything that raises the heart rate - will increase blood flow to the heart and boost your overall health.

4. Reduced risk of developing dementia that may increase your confidence and independence

The risks of developing dementia, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease are common among elderly who are living a sedentary lifestyle. The study, which analyzed more than 1,600 older adults over five years, found that those who did not exercise were more likely to develop dementia than those who did. In the absence of any deteriorating neurological conditions, like dementia, can promote independence and can even boost your confidence.

5. Prevent or delay disease

Exercise and proper diet are an effective remedy for many chronic conditions. Studies show that people with arthritis, heart disease, or diabetes benefit from regular activity. It can also help in management of high cholesterol, which can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular accident and diseases.

Diabetes is chronic disease that has an impact in millions of people all over the word. It is a metabolic disease that is characterized by an increase in blood glucose (sugar) level. Uncontrolled cases may lead to heart disease, sight- robbing eyes, foot amputation, kidney failure and other major complications. Roughly 70% of people progresses to Type 2 Diabetes (Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) which is the most common type of diabetes that affects adult, this often develop from pre- diabetes state. However, this type of diabetes is highly preventable through lifestyle changes and modification.

7 Tips on How to Prevent Developing Diabetes

1. Cut off sugar, follow a low calorie diet
- Avoid foods high in refined carbs and sugar as the body breaks these foods easily resulting in an increase in blood sugar level in the bloodstreams instead of being absorbed inside the cell. However eating a variety of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of diabetes. Minimizing intake of carbohydrates results to lesser breakdown of sugar after eating therefore, lesser production of insulin to maintain a healthy blood sugar levels.

2. Water: Primary beverage
- Water is the most natural beverage you can drink; increased amount of water consumption tends to have a controlled blood sugar level. Sugar- sweetened beverages like ready to drink fruit juices and soda that contains artificial flavorings and sweeteners are linked to both obesity and development of diabetes.

3. Lose weight and excess body fat
- An increase in body weight and excess fat deposits predispose an individual from acquiring and developing certain types of diseases such as diabetes. Engaging into portion control or size of foods leads to a healthier well-being.

4. Get more physically active
- Regular exercise does not only reduce risk of developing diabetes but also improves overall health of an individual. This increases insulin secretion therefore keeping blood sugar levels under control. Physical activity or simply allotting spare time moving your body may be beneficial. A change in sedentary way of life can be as basic as walking for a few minutes, standing while doing some stretching, activities that are incorporated on our day to day lives.

5. Avoid stress
- Stress has a major effect on regulating blood sugar level especially on people who already have existing diabetes. It triggers the release of several hormones causing an increase in glucose production that is used by the body to respond on the situation. If this sugar (glucose) is not used or converted to energy it remains in the bloodstream resulting to a rise in glucose level.

6. Quit smoking
- Sedentary behavior is a huge risk factor of developing diabetes which includes smoking. Smoking greatly affects health even those who do not engage to it, this may cause cell damage overtime, increase risk of inflammatory diseases, respiratory infection, cardiovascular problem that may build and worsen symptoms of diabetes.

7. Regular medical appointment
- One way of identifying your risk of developing diabetes is through regular consultation and check- up with your doctor. This may keep you in track of your current health status and may provide a quick medical intervention if problem arises.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis that occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones, commonly in joints of hands, knees, hips and spine, wears down over time.

Despite of irreversible damage on your joints, Osteoarthritis symptoms can usually be managed.

Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

1. Affected joints might be painful during or after movement

2. Joint stiffness that is most noticeable upon waking up in the morning or after being inactive.

3. Joint tenderness when you apply light pressure to or near it.

4. Limited range of motion or loss of flexibility.

5. Grating sensation is present when using the joint, and you might hear popping or crackling.

6. Extra bits of bone might be present around the affected area which feel like hard lumps.

7. Inflammation of soft tissues around the joint might be present.

Main cause of Osteoarthritis is the gradual deterioration of the cartilages that serves as cushion in the end of the bones. These cartilages enable nearly frictionless joint motion. Thus, rubbing of bones occurs when it wears down completely.

Factors that can increase your risk of osteoarthritis:

1. Being overweight contributes to osteoarthritis, the more you weigh, the greater your risk. Extra weight adds stress to weight-bearing joints, such as your hips and knees. Additionally, fat tissue produces proteins that can cause harmful inflammation in and around your joints.

2. Engaging a sport or job that places repetetive stress on a joint might develop to osteoarthritis.

3. Osteoarthritis increases with age.

4. Past joint injuries can increase the risk of osteoarthritis.

5. Women are more likely to develop osteoarthritis.

6. Congenital malformed joints or defective cartilages.

7. Hemochromatosis, a condition where in there is too much iron in the body that caused by metabolic diseases, like Diabetes, can also put you at risk.

8. Genetical factor might also put you at risk of osteoarthritis.

Below are variety of treatments that can reduce pain and help you move better:

1. Pain Medications such as Acetaminophen, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and Duloxetine (Cymbalta).

2. Physical and Occupational therapy sessions can help you do muscle strengthening exercises around your joint that can increase your flexibility and reduce pain and let you discover ways to everyday tasks without further stressing your joints.

3. Gentle exercises such as swimming or walking, that you do on your own regularly might also help you strengthen your joint muscles.

4. Surgery and other procedures like Cortisone and Lubrication injections can be done if conservative treatments doesn't help.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that worsens over time that often leads to chronic pain that can become severe enough to make your daily tasks challenging and even resulting to depression and sleep disturbances.

Cesarian Section or C-Section is defined as a surgical procedure involving incision of the walls of the abdomen and uterus for delivery of offspring.

Here are ways to improve your recovery after a Cesarean Section:

1. Taking painkillers
⁃ Pain is normal after C-Section that may last up to two weeks. Your doctor will usually prescribe an anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and even narcotics for severe pain.

2. Taking probiotics
⁃ Probiotics such as lactobacillus when consumed helps you restore or maintains beneficial bacteria in the stomach which prevents diarrhea and improves immunity and overall health. Doctors prefers probiotics rather than antibiotics during surgery as antibiotics can wipeout healthy bacteria in your gut.

3. Caring for the incision
⁃ Most of time, stitches that are used during c-section surgery dissolve on their own but if you have staples, it should be removed after 4 to 5 days depending on how fast your wound heals. Maintain the incision site dry at all times. Observe for any signs of infection like redness, warm to touch and increasing pain. Notify your doctor immediately if any of these are present. Remember to avoid also hot tubs and pools.

4. Start ambulating
⁃ Once your doctor gives you a go signal to walk, you should start walking. Start by taking short walks and build up to 30 minutes after you've been home for few days, as walking increase circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. It also helps with bowel function and increases your body's ability to heal.

5. Eat right
⁃ Focus on eating the right kind of food. Preferrably foods with anti-inflammatory effect and rich in Vitamin C. Examples are Broccoli, Kale and Berries. Vitamin C improves tissue repair which will shorten your wound healing. Substitute red meat to chicken and salmon which contains amino acids that form proteins that makes tissue. Furthermore, due to pregnancy hormones together with painkillers, mother's are also experiencing constipation. To overcome constipation, eat high fiber rich foods, drink plenty of water and ask your doctor about using a stool softener if necessary.

6. Ask for help if necessary
⁃ Ask your partner, a family member or a friend when lifting anything heavy and cleaning so you can focus on your baby and your own health. Remember that for the first two weeks, lifting anything more than 20 pounds can cause your wound to open. When doing breastfeeding, you can sit up in a straight back position on a chair and put a pillow under your arms as a support.

7. Avoid crunches
⁃ There are seven layers of tissue that are disturbed during c-section, any movement that pushes the abdominal muscles forward like crunches without complete healing of abdominal muscles and fascia can lead to hernia. Instead, try exercises like modified planks and bridging. Additionally, instead of using abdominal binder to help ease the pain and to decrease swelling, you can use a graduated compression undergarment as an alternative. This will prevent pressure on the pelvic organs decreasing the risk of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

8. Seek for emotional support
⁃ Nowadays, support groups are available in our communities. Look for an online or in-person support group for new moms or talk to a friend about your feelings. You'll be a better mother when you make yourself and your baby a priority.

Good parenting is a responsibility that plays a crucial role when raising a child. It involves a lot of patience, understanding and even sacrifices. For mothers, it starts as early as during pregnancy.

Some women experience health problems during pregnancy which involves the mother's health, the child's health, or both. Even women who were healthy before getting pregnant can experience complications. In order to help decrease the risk for problems or manage existing conditions before they become serious, you should have an early or regular prenatal care.

Gestational diabetes is one of the most common complication during pregnancy. It is a state in which the body does not produce insulin to regulate sugar level and is usually temporary.

Expectant mothers who have family history of diabetes, or is over 35 years maybe tested more often or frequent or earlier.

Signs and symptoms includes:

⁃ Frequent urination
⁃ Fatigue
⁃ Frequent vaginal and skin infections
⁃ Unusual thirst

Screening for gestational diabetes is between 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy as during this time the placenta produces large amount of hormones which may cause insulin resistance.

During prenatal visit, a sweet liquid drink is given one hour before blood will be drawn, this may cause nausea. The result will indicate if enough insulin is produced or not.

Controlling blood sugar levels is the primary treatment of gestational diabetes

To maintain blood sugar levels, you should monitor your blood levels, proper diet, exercise and if necessary, insulin therapy.

If it is not treated, consequences include:

⁃ Premature delivery
⁃ Macrosomia
⁃ Chance of cesarean delivery
⁃ Fetal death

After delivery, it is important also to watch for signs of diabetes which may include persistent thirst, frequent urination and high sugar level in the blood and urine.

Test of blood sugar levels may be done few months after giving birth, as gestational diabetes may develop to type 2 diabetes later in life.

Having this knowledge about Gestational Diabetes, it is time for you to spread this information by sharing this posts.
