Glad to have spent an exciting month with the Breast And Plastic Surgery teams at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center under the mentorship of Dr. Monica Morrow aided by the UICC - Union for International Cancer Control technical fellowship programme.
Truly an enriching experience not only in the operating rooms but also in the academic sessions and clinics: the streamlining of processes; focus on patient experience, breast cosmetic outcomes and quality of life; technical nuances of conservative mastectomies, whole breast reconstruction and LYMPHA were some of the key takeaways.
Now, back at Max Healthcare armed with this experience and look forward to strengthening our Breast Disease Management Group.
Please join us in this unique effort of depicting the multifaceted aspects of a cancer patient’s journey through the lens of an artist.
All exhibits will be displayed at Museo Camera Centre for the Photographic Arts, Gurgaon on Sunday, 30th October 2022.
Every cancer survivor has a unique story to tell. The story of her journey, her battles, her wins and her scars. There are multitude of emotions which swell and pulsate through this journey.
Max Institute of Cancer Care (MICC) and Max Hospital Gurgaon along with super talented Ayesha Gardner are making one such endeavour to present this journey in art form to bring about breast cancer awareness.
Breast cancer survivors from our support group have come forward to narrate their journeys as Ayesha tries to capture them in art form with each digital art representing a bundle of emotions unique to each survivour.
Resilience in Anguish, below, is portrait of one such survivor where in she describes her anguish and her ability to overcome it with knowledge and strength.
All of these will be exhibited at Museo Camera Centre for the Photographic Arts, Gurgaon on Sunday, 30th October 2022. Do visit and support.

Adding colour to your plate and life by eating more of greens, vegetables and fruits helps in keeping your weight in check and reducing your risk of many cancers including breast cancer. Choose seasonal and locally available vegetables and fruits.
At the same time, try to control the portion of ‘Whites’ on your plate: be it rice, breads or cheese.
You can eat healthy by keeping it simple: no need of following any dietary fad!
PS: Moderation needed in consumption of fruits too: especially for those with Diabetes.
As we have stepped into October which is recognised worldwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here is our effort to spread awareness about ‘Breast Self Examination’ : a simple tool which must be practised by all women to detect breast diseases early.
I had spoken about this a few years ago and had received feedback that a video in Hindi is needed.
Hope this helps: Please Spread the Word!
Early detection Saves Lives.

What to eat? What not to eat?
This is one of the most commonly discussed and researched topics by patients, their families and even the general public.
These frequent discussions pushed us to try and put out some basic ‘must know’ information about diet and cancer.
So let’s begin by talking about ‘Sugar and Cancer’
1. Eating sugar does not cause cancer and a complete sugar free diet doesn’t protect you from this disease. You may have heard that glucose fuels cancer and so, zero sugar should save you. The truth is that glucose fuels all body cells and starving us completely of sugar will have no specific benefit in cancer risk reduction. It’s the amount which is critical.
2. Brown sugar, jaggery, honey etc may have some difference in their nutritional value and added preservatives compared to white sugar but their calorie content is quite similar. When consumed in excess, like white sugar, they will harm anyone and everyone.
3. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame-K have been linked to risk of getting cancer so be wary of all ‘diet’ food and beverages.
The amount of intake is important. Excess sugar intake causes weight gain and which is a major risk factor for a large number of such as breast, uterine, colorectal cancer etc.
We need to remember it’s not only the sugar we visibly add that we need to think of, but that processed and packaged food items contain ‘hidden’ sugars which add on to our daily intake and we may be blind to it. Be cautious about not only desserts but every energy drink, soda, biscuit, breakfast cereal etc. that you consume.
It is recommended that our daily intake of calories from added sugar should be less than 100 calories for women and 150 calories for men which is equivalent to 5-6 teaspoons in a day. It is just that the counting isn’t as easy as you may think because of all the hidden sugars around us.
Instead of going on a very stringent diet with no sugar, keep it to a healthy minimum and always remember: The key is keeping your total calorie content, percentage sugar intake and weight in check!

With the World Cancer Day on 4th February, there have been umpteen talks on cancer awareness this week.
One such talk was the session moderated by Dr. Shalini Bhasin for the staff and students of Isabella Thoburn College (i.t. College ) Lucknow.
It was indeed a pleasure to interact with youngsters from my very own Lucknow-The City of Nawabs and talk to them about myths and facts about cancer, what the youth must know and what they can do to lower their risk.
This World Cancer Care Day, the theme is to attempt and eliminate any disparity in ease of access to quality cancer care.
Cancer care should be available to all irrespective of age, gender, sexuality, residence, economic or education status.
Let us all try and close the cancer care gap!
Most people believe that breast cancer treatment means removal of a woman’s breast. Is that fact or fiction?
It is a MYTH. Breast conservation surgery is possible in a large number of cases especially if cancer is detected early. Even if mastectomy i.e. whole breast removal is needed, reconstruction using either the patient’s own tissues or implants must be discussed.

Every breast clinician would agree that a thorough understanding of breast radiology is a must for optimal patient management. However, often we do have some doubts about interpreting imaging, choosing the right technique and of-course, image guided interventions. And every clinician doesn’t have the luxury of the support of a dedicated expert breast radiologist.
This intensive online course, is directed at all such clinicians managing breast patients and aims to provide them a platform to learn directly from the experts.
Join us and equip yourselves by learning the ‘Essentials of breast imaging for clinicians’
