|| Ravana Shaking Mount Kailasa ||
700s
Central India, Madhya Pradesh 🇮🇳
Chandela Dynasty, 8th century
DESCRIPTION :
On Mount Kailasa, Shiva lives with his wife Parvati. In this sculpture Shaiva presses down his big toe to quell the ten-armed demon Ravana, who tried to take Mount Kailasa to his island. As Ravana was trying to shake the mountain loose, Parvati turned and clung to Shiva in fear— the moment depicted in this magnificent sculpture, which once formed part of a temple exterior.

VEERABHADRA - VIGOROUS FIGHTER & FIERCE FORM OF SHIVA (வீரபத்திரர்)
Fierce looking monolithic sculpture of AGHORA VEERABHADRA is one of the four colossal sculptures, each measuring about 20 feet high that invite visitors at the entrance of Sanctum of the Nellayappar Temple.
Wielding a sword and shield, he stamps over Daksha. During rule of Vijayanagara dynasty, this style of sculpting was much popular to invoke the spirit of warriors.
This more than life size monolithic sculpture is carved in Granite (much harder to manipulate than soapstone) with richness in ornaments, attire, intricate carvings in the arm & hand, hand holding the sword, standing posture, facial expression, bones in rib cage.
The key highlights of this huge temple covering around 14 acres are the ‘Mani mandapam’ which contains musical pillars that produce sound in various pitches when struck and ‘Pancha Sabha’ (Tamira Sabha / Copper Hall of Dance) - One of the 5 temples where God Shiva performed cosmic dance.

Virupaksha Temple, Pattadakal, Karnataka.
The Virupaksha temple, is the largest and most sophisticated of the monuments at Pattadakal. In inscriptions, it is referred to as "Shri Lokeshvara Mahasila Prasada", after its sponsor Queen Lokmahadevi, and is dated to about 740 CE. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
It was constructed by the Queen to commemorate the successful military campaigns of her husband, King Vikramaditya II of Chalukya dynasty, against the Pallavas (4th-9th centuries CE). The temple inscription also mentions grant to the "musicians of the temple" by the Queen and the identity of the chief architect "Gunda Anivaritacharya" who was given the honorary title of “Perijereppu Patta” by king Vikramaditya II.
The temple is notable for its range, and quality, of construction exemplifying a well developed Dravidian architectural style, as well as the inscribed names of the artists beneath the panels they worked on

A pair of stone elephants stands at the gates to welcome visitors to this temple. The Madhukeshwara Temple is probably the most iconic symbol of Banavasi. This is a temple dedicated to Shiva that dates back to the Kadamba dynasty. As ruling dynasties changed, the temple underwent a number of changes and renovations.
The temple features a very simple structure with minimal wall ornamentation. Under the Chalukyan rulers, a Sankalpa mandapa was added to the temple structure. Similarly, the Hoysala period saw the addition of a Nritya mandapa.
Unlike the rest of the temple, this mandapa has exquisite carvings on the ceiling and pillars. The temple gets its name from the honeyed hue of the Shiva Lingam contained inside it. A monolithic statue of the Nandi Bull can also be seen in the temple's Mahamantapa.
