Appreciating the work of Manu Parekh.

Vivid colours and prominent lines are an integral part of Parekh’s work and each exudes the energy that he attempts to capture. He admits to being very strongly influenced by his surroundings.
Banaras as a city came to play an integral role in his work after his first visit there following his father’s death. This holy city of hope, of faith, of tourists offered him a vast number of contradictions in one location.
Works from Manu Parekh's Banaras series are characterised by his intuitive use of colour, bold brushstrokes, and prominent lines. He has experimented with colourful abstractions, sexual imagery, and figuration, responding as much to nature as to daily life and social issues. The women in his works are represented as nature spirits, plant forms, germinating seeds and allegorical figures, recalling mythological traditions.

Avani Tandon Vieira is a researcher, curator, and archivist. She recently completed a PhD in Criticism and Culture from the University of Cambridge. Prior to her doctorate, she received a bachelor’s degree in English at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and a Master’s in World Literatures at the University of Oxford. Her practice is focused on the intersections of cultural production and political life. This exhibition explores how we may find new ways of seeing and being in space. The works in this exhibition are by young creatives from across India who look with sensitivity and thoughtfulness at questions of location, mobility, and mapping. Many of them are collaboratively produced, in recognition of the value of - and need for - a collectively imagined approach to the crises of the contemporary world. By bringing them together, she hopes to create a space for considered engagement with questions that concern us all, and for the visitor to be an equal participant in this process.

Vaidehi Gohil has a background in Art History from M.S. University Baroda. She’s worked as a writer and researcher with various organisations and currently works at Tarq Mumbai. ‘Yesterday Came Suddenly’ invites the viewer to embrace the ordinary and resist overlooking the seemingly mundane. In today’s fast-paced culture, where trends come and go in the blink of an eye, it aims to create a space for contemplation, where artworks serve as triggers for personal memories and reflections. Drawing from Vaidehi’s experiences engaging with gallery audiences, it ruminates on the connection between viewers and artworks, urging us to slow down and explore the emotions they evoke. The process of curating the works went beyond conceptual considerations, exploring the artist’s practice, visual language, philosophical underpinnings, and conversations around the reception of their work. While some works are inseparable from the artist’s discipline of painting as a way of being and as a means to connect with themselves, others build on spaces of fictionalisation that furthers viewers inspections. Materials also become a space for reflection in both still and moving images, contributing to their interaction within the space.

Aayushi Majithia and Rohit Murmu are 1st year Masters students, currently enrolled at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda pursuing a post-graduation in Art History & Aesthetics.

Their Curatorial postulations are premised on the contemporary discourses around indigenous communities. There is an urgency to discuss these ideas and further conversations, around these objects as their relevance will soon cease to exist. Apart from their innate academic involvement in the subject of indigenous art and practices, Rohit is also personally connected to this project and the community, as he himself is a member of the same.

Akshata, a textile artist, passionately adorns her craft with cutting-edge tapestries, weaving intricate designs that reflect her deep connection to nature. Her journey began with a BFA in Textile Design from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, followed by an MA in Fashion and Textiles from Heriot Watt University, Scotland. Drawing inspiration from landscapes and observational drawings of nature, Akshata found her artistic expression through tapestry weaving.

Rejecting the conformity of textiles to mere utility, Akshata explores tapestry as a means of self-expression and introspection. She pushes the boundaries of traditional weaving by seeking non-traditional surfaces, imbuing her works with textures and tactile qualities that evoke tranquility and therapy. Her inclusive approach considers visually impaired individuals, integrating sensory elements into her compositions.

Akshata’s compositions draw inspiration from the natural world, juxtaposing it with human interventions. Her intuitive process flows with the medium, resulting in tapestries that reflect the ebb and flow of life, particularly evident in her recent exploration of rivers and urban landscapes’ ecological implications. She embeds multiple layers of visuality and meaning into her works, creating rich tapestries that resonate with viewers.

Having worked as a designer and researcher at esteemed institutions like Peepul Tree and Live History India in Mumbai, as well as Journeys in Design and Revier Embroidery in Scotland, Akshata brings a wealth of experience to her practice. She has participated in workshops and projects focused on inclusive textiles, such as Tactile Artworks for MAP in Bangalore and Warp and Woof at CSMVS, Mumbai. Akshata’s work has been showcased at renowned galleries and exhibitions globally, earning her accolades such as the All India Gold Medal for Tapestry and the Award in 2017.
