A museum in a magnificent heritage building surrounded by a picturesque garden.
Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of British India (1899-1905) conceived the idea of establishing the Victoria Memorial Hall(VMH), Kolkata on death of Queen Victoria in 1901. It was intended to be a period museum in memory of the queen with particular emphasis on Indo-British History. दिसंबर महीने का विशेष वृक्ष :
बोहीनिया ब्लेकियाना - हांगकांग ऑर्किड वृक्ष
यह वृक्ष बोहीनिया परप्यूरिया (पर्पल बोहीनिया) और बोहीनिया वेरिएगाटा के बीच एक संकर वृक्ष है। हांगकांग में इन पेड़ों की होनेवाली खेती का स्रोत केवल एक संकर वृक्ष है। नए पेड़ ग्राफ्टिंग प्रक्रिया द्वारा तैयार होते हैं।
यह पेड़ वैसे तो नपुंसक है, यदि बोहीनिया परप्यूरिया के पराग कणों से इसे परागित (अधिकतर कीड़े-मकोड़े द्वारा प्राकृतिक रूप से) किया जाए तो इसमें बीज बन सकते हैं। विक्टोरिया मेमोरियल हॉल बगीचे का एकमात्र वृक्ष, जो पूर्वी प्रवेश द्वार से उत्तर की ओर लगे मैदान में एक सफेद बोहीनिया परप्यूरिया के पास है। इस पेड़ की शाखाएँ जमीन पर कुछ दूरी तक अधिकतर क्षैतिजाकार पड़ी रहती हैं और जमीन का स्पर्श कर इसे एक अनोखा, विचित्र आकार देती हैं।
इस पेड़ में नवंबर के महीने से फूलों का खिलना शुरू हो जाता है जो जनवरी तक जारी रहता है, जिसमे दिसंबर का महीना शीर्ष पर होता है। इस वृक्ष में फलियाँ लगती हैं। शायद पर्पल बोहीनिया के साथ संकर कराने के कारण, लेकिन अब तक यह जानकारी नहीं है कि इसके बीज किसी प्रकार उपयोगी हैं या नहीं।
पाँच पंखुड़ियों वाले फूलों के अंतर्गत एक मानक पंखुड़ी होती है, जिसमें हल्के बैंगनी रंग के साथ गहरे बैंगनी रंग भी होते हैं। मानक पंखुड़ी के पास की दो पंखुड़ियों पर सफेद रंग की नसनुमा आकृति दिखाई देती है। बाकी दो पंखुड़ियों में भी नसनुमा आकृति मिलती है लेकिन पंखुड़ियों के आधार पर कोई नसनुमा आकृति नहीं मिलती है। इसके खिले हुए आकर्षक फूल मधुमक्खियों को बहुत आकर्षित करते हैं।
Tree of the Month - December 2023
Bauhinia blakeana – Hong Kong Orchid tree
This tree is a hybrid between Bauhinia purpurea (Purple Bauhinia) and Bauhinia variegata. All trees in cultivation owe their existence to the single hybrid tree in Hong Kong. New trees are produced by grafting.
The tree is self-sterile but can form seeds if it is pollinated (usually naturally by insects) with pollen from Bauhinia purpurea. The sole tree in the Victoria Memorial Garden is found in a plot adjacent to and in the north of the east gate very near a white form of Bauhinia purpurea. The trunk of this tree lies almost horizontal to the ground for a length and touches ground giving it a curious, mishappen shape. The tree starts flowering in the month of November and continues till January, December being the peak month. This tree forms pods, perhaps due to the proximity with the Purple Bauhinia, but it has not been ascertained if the seeds are viable.
The five-petalled flowers have a standard petal, light purple with deep purple colours therein. The two petals adjacent to the standard have white markings on the base of the petal and the veins on the petal are marked out in white. In the two remaining petals, the veins are marked with white but there is no white in the base of the petal. The large showy flowers attract bees when in bloom.

Our Story
The Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata, with its sprawling grounds and iconic marble edifice, is the most-visited museum in India in terms of footfall.
The autonomous organization which is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, opened its doors to the public in December 1921. It hosts a rich collection of art and historical artefacts relating mainly to Indian history from the eighteenth century onward.
Over the years the Victoria Memorial Hall has emerged as Kolkata’s most vibrant cultural space, hosting permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as various kinds of creative conversations through lectures, workshops, musical concerts and other performances.
