Journey of 18 years...and beyond

It was the evening of 1st February 2002 when Prof. Siddiqi and Sutapa Biswas were talking cancer over dinner. Not an exciting topic to be discussed over dinner! But both were affected by it at the same time, one by a personal loss in the family due to cancer and the other by seeing cancer deaths every day as the Director of a premier cancer hospital in Kolkata. Having had a lifetime in cancer research Prof. Siddiqi had seen cancer rather closely and did feel that it was not just about treating cancer it was saving the life. This brought both these minds to the idea of working for cancer prevention and early detection. One was a powerhouse of experience and knowledge while the other had unlimited energy to realise that dream. All the thoughts and ideas of an organisation was stored in a blue file that exchanged hands on that very evening “take my dream” said Prof. Siddiqi. CFI was formally registered as an NGO on June 11, 2002.

Cancer Foundation of India or CFI as is known to many was conceived as a platform for multidisciplinary activities on cancer which lent it a unique structure that many felt was not relevant for India at that time. It went beyond the service delivery model followed by most conventional charities yet continued to break grounds. Over the past 15 years CFI has broken several boundaries that many thought a small NGO would not. It has made a name for itself as an organisation with strong values and totally dedicated to cancer public health in India, strictly guided by its four objectives of information, research, training, screening and support. Despite the limitation of financial and human resources, CFI forayed into community activities in 6 districts of Bengal and 6 states of Northeastern India. More than 200 doctors have been specially trained in the capacity building workshops on cancer prevention, over 9,500 women have been screened for cancers, 1,000 young girls have been safely vaccinated with HPV vaccine and thousands sensitised on ways to understand cancers early. Having hosted two celebrated Nobel laureates in Kolkata and several eminent scientists CFI has conducted several national-level symposia and seminars. Being DSIR (Govt. of India) recognised SIRO for the past 9 years, and invited full member of UICC and with active involvement in policy making at national and state-level committees and international groups empowered CFI to tread boldly into the future.

Prof. Maqsood Siddiqi continues to lead CFI actively as its Chairman and motivate the younger workers to retain the uniqueness and objectivity of CFI under the leadership of Sutapa Biswas as its Executive Director and co-Founder.
