In our modern times of increasing musculoskeletal ailments and undiscerned decisions for orthopaedic surgeries, it’s critical to explore how Ayurveda can play a role in deep healing for short and long term vitality and quality of life. Ghrita/ghee is “snehothama,” a most desired lipid to support the functional quality of joints and musculature of the human system. Ghee can prevent/cure degenerative changes in the joints, bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and other connective tissues in various conditions such as inflammation, osteoarthritis, spondylitis, spine diseases and acute/chronic sports injuries. Additionally, in this session, we will learn how Kalarippayat - “the mother of martial arts” - with its legacy of using ghee to enhance performance and treat various musculoskeletal ailments, proves the time tested efficacy of Ghrita.

Speakers:

Dr. Lal Krishnan is an Ayurvedic doctor based in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. He specializes in Orthopedic and sports injury management, also known as Kalari Marma therapy, non-healing wound management, chiropractic adjustment therapy, TCM, exercise therapy and more.

Radhika Gurukkal is a Kalari Master, born and bred in the lineage of the Hindustan Kalari Sangam, an ancestral Kalarippayattu training center and Ayurvedic healing praxis established during the year of 1950, under the patronage of Guru Veerasree Sami Gurukkal.

We are grateful that and his son have come to our home, our temple and have enamoured with his experiences and conversations as he undertakes the traditional ancient treatment practises of Kalari. We wish him health, peace and prosperity.

On 6th June 2023, the Kalari community as a whole lost one of the renowned and astute practitioner of the Kalari artform. Hailing from a family (Mudavangattil) of commanders who led a war for the erstwhile King of Malabar, Shri Sankara Narayan Menon, reverentially known as Unni Gurukkal thought Kalari martial art at Vallabhatta Kalari in Chavakkad even at the age of 93. With his departure an era in Kalari comes to an end. In memory and recognition of his contributions to Kalari, we express our deepest condolences with a heavy heart.
