CHRONIC COUGH AND SMOKING !!!!
Chronic cough is variously defined as one that lingers for more than three to eight weeks, sometimes lasting for months or even years.
Chronic coughing is common, so frequent that it rates as one of the most common reasons for seeing a doctor.
Smoking is a leading cause. Sooner or later, most cigarette smokers develop a chronic "smoker's cough." Chemical irritation is responsible — but the same noxious chemicals that cause the simple smoker's cough can lead to far more serious conditions, such as bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia, and lung cancer. The chronic cough is always a cause of concern for smokers.
Why Is Omicron So Contagious?
A mere “whiff of infected breath” is enough exposure to Omicron to catch the most transmissible variant of coronavirus, according to a leading scientist tracking the record-setting spread of Covid-19.
Prof Peter Openshaw, a member of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), said the speed of the emergence of Omicron was down to it being "so infectious" to the general public.
Underprivileged children struggle to have access to basic needs like food, clothing and shelter. But there are people who are sensitive enough to look after their needs, and making them able to focus on larger goals, including that of education. Such great initiative have been taken by this institution ( Ramswaroop) However, concepts like dental hygiene remain so far out of their world, that they either treat it as a luxury or not important at all. Looking into all these

COVID 19 AND POOR ORAL HYGIENE ! ARE THEY INTERRELATED????
There does not appear to be much research suggesting that COVID-19 can lead to poor oral health.
However, one 2021 study suggests that poor oral health can play a part in contracting SARS-CoV-2.
The study notes that the mouth can act as an entry point for SARS-CoV-2 because cells in the tongue, gums, and teeth have angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2). This is the protein receptor that allows the virus to enter cells.
In those with poor oral health, the presence of ACE2 receptors appears to be higher.
Hence people should try to practice good personal and oral hygiene as a form of disease prevention.
HIV VACCINE TRIAL STARTS AT OXFORD!!!!
The University of Oxford today started vaccinations of a novel HIV vaccine candidate as part of a Phase I clinical trial in the UK.
The goal of the trial, known as HIV-CORE 0052, is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity of the HIVconsvX vaccine – a mosaic vaccine targeting a broad range of HIV-1 variants, making it potentially applicable for HIV strains in any geographical region.
Thirteen healthy, HIV-negative adults, aged 18-65 and who are considered not to be at high risk of infection, will initially receive one dose of the vaccine followed by a further booster dose at four weeks.
ACNE IN RAINY SEASON !!
Humidity increases during the rainy season, combines with the heat of the summer, and increases the sebum production in the skin leading to a greasy appearance, which become a breeding ground.
The sticky face invites dust, dirt and sweat, which clogs the skin pores leading to acne breakouts. In addition to that, the skin becomes uneven and lifeless. There may be instances, where the person does not have a problem of acne in any other season but it only flares up in the monsoons. Acne in the rainy season can affect the face, back and arms.
Here are a few simple tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing during monsoons:
1) Neem leaves
Take a few neem leaves and make a paste of them with turmeric and milk. Apply the paste on the face and other affected areas. Leave for 10 minutes and then wash with cold water. Your skin will feel smooth and will become blemish-free over time.
2) mix of oils
Mix few drops of neem oil with coconut or almond oil and apply on the affected areas to get rid of pimples
3)Sugar to the rescue
Mix one tablespoon of honey with three tablespoons of brown sugar and lightly scrub your face with this mixture. Wash off after 15 minutes. This will help prevent acne and leave the skin feeling clean and smooth.
4) steam regularly
5) drink lots of water

NATURAL DETOX OF MOUTH ( OIL PULLING ) !!!!
Oil pulling is an ancient practice ( Ayurveda) that involves swishing oil in your mouth to remove bacteria and promote oral hygiene.
While it’s not entirely clear how oil pulling works, it’s claimed to “pull” bacteria from the mouth. It may also help by moisturizing your gums and increasing saliva production, which can reduce bacteria .
Oil pulling with coconut oil is easy to fit into a regular oral health routine. Coconut oil is available at grocery stores and online, and people do not need any additional ingredients.
Coconut oil is a highly absorbable oil with several health benefits, including reducing inflammation and fighting harmful bacteria. It is also edible, so has few risks for oral use.
Most supporters of oil pulling recommend swishing a tablespoon of oil in the mouth for 15–20 minutes to reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth and on the teeth.
Benefits
Benefits of oil pulling may include:
1) Killing harmful bacteria in the mouth
2) reducing bad breath
3) preventing cavities
4) reducing inflammation and promoting gum health
PPE ( personal protective equipment)in dentistry !!!! ........
The term PPE refers to protective clothing, gloves, face shields, eyewear, facemasks, and/or other equipment designed to protect the wearer from injury or the spread of infection. Most commonly used in health-care settings, PPE in dentistry acts as a barrier between infectious materials and the doctor's skin, mouth, nose, or eyes.
Primary herpetic gingivostomatitis in child.......
It is a common pediatric infection caused in 90% of cases by herpes simplex virus type 1. It is usually seen before 6 years of age.
While most children will be asymptomatic, diagnosis of children with symptoms is made based on clinical presentation of erythematous gingiva, mucosal hemorrhages, and clusters of small erupted vesicles throughout the mouth.
The condition is highly contagious, and complications range from indolent cold sores to dehydration and even life-threatening encephalitis.
Acyclovir is a well established antiviral drug used effectively for the treatment of herpes simplex infections, chickenpox (shortened fever time), and shingles. It is also used frequently for children with immunodeficiency.

COVID is affecting Kids too this time
In sharp contrast to the first phase of COVID in mid-2020 during which few children were affected, the second phase is proving to be different.
Children had constituted less that 10% of cases then. And when affected at all, had been mostly asymptomatic.
During the present 2nd phase, the situation is not quite the same. Hospitals in Mumbai alone have reported over 80,000 cases. Paediatricians, who keep themselves aware of new information in their subspecialty more than their adult counterparts, are indeed recognising and treating many more.
There are two types of illnesses that SARS-CoV-2 virus is causing in kids:
The first is the milder version of usual syndrome it causes in adults: fever, sore throat, dry cough, loss of smell and taste, body aches. When these set of symptoms come on in older children (10-18 years) along with an outbreak at home, there is no missing it. COVID RT-PCR test is usually positive and treatment is along the lines of that for adults. Children usually fare better and recover faster than grown-ups and elderly.
The second presentation can be foxing. It presents usually in younger children with some or most of the symptoms:
1. Fever that lasts for more than a day
2. Rash on the skin.
3. Vomiting
4. Diarrhoea
5. Feeling unusually drowsy—inability to stay awake
6. Red eyes
7. Enlarged lymph nodes
8. Fast heartbeat
9. Rapid breathing
10. Redness or swelling of the lips, tongue, hands, and feet
The child looks toxic and sick, and small children being vulnerable as they usually are, often do not make it if diagnosis and treatment are delayed.
This recently recognised illness called MIS-C (Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome in Children) is caused by an exuberant immunological reaction of the body to COVID antigen. Hence, the COVID-RT PCR test is often negative but antibodies to COVID are strongly positive, indicating that the child had recently suffered from the viral infection. As are other immunoglobulins such as IgG.
Treatment consists of anti-inflammatory agents (corticosteroids), blood thinners, antibiotics and other supportive measures.
Mrs Khushnooma Kapadia, wife of a doctor and mother of two kids who suffered this condition, has recently been campaigning extensively to create awareness on MIS-C so that other children can be diagnosed on time and saved.
Last year, a handful of cases were reported in children and called Kawasaki’s disease: another hyperactive inflammatory response seen in children…that also had enlarged lymph nodes as a prominent feature.
Call it by any name you wish, but as long as doctors are aware and can recognise this special presentation in small children, and provide TIMELY appropriate care, Mrs Kapadia’s work would have been well done.
And scientists are talking loudly about the impending 3rd wave of COVID that is feared to affect kids far more. So let us be prepared.
Dental management prior to radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer ............
Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) describes the process where irradiated bone undergoes necrosis and becomes exposed through soft-tissue. The first report of ORN of the jaws after radiation therapy was published in 1992 by Regaurd.
A dental check up prior to radiation therapy is mandatory for all patients , because any surgical procedure done post radiation therapy increases the chances of ORN. A dentist will do a panoramic scan and thorough check up of the teeth prior to Radiation therapy and all teeth having unfavourable prognosis are extracted and others requiring restoration are restored. Oral hygiene instructions given and scaling is also done.
That is why a dental check up is so important in these cases so as to eliminate the chances of OSTEORADIONECROSIS .

Sputnik V, Covishield, Covaxin: All About Vaccines Approved In India
The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approved the Sputnik V vaccine for emergency use in India on Tuesday. After Covishield and Covaxin, the Russian drug is the third vaccine to be approved in the country. India is the 60th country to have approved Sputnik V.
Sputnik has an efficacy of 91.6%, next only to Pfizer and Moderna. Clinical trials showed that Pfizer and Moderna shots had shown an efficacy of about 95% against symptomatic COVID-19 in lab settings, and Sputnik V is only the third to have registered such a high efficacy rate.
Coronavirus: Apart From Loss Of Taste, Look Out For These 4 Oral Symptoms Of COVID-19
According to a new study conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH), which has been published in the scientific journal, Nature Medicine, nearly half of COVID victims suffer from oral symptoms during the course of the infection.
Since only the classic signs are visibly seen, experts now point that a lot of these oral symptoms, which may come up days prior to the other signs may go unnoticed.
1) Dry mouth
Dry mouth is usually connected to a lot of viral infections, autoimmune disorders and now, COVID-19 as well.
2) Lesions
When you go through a viral infection like COVID-19, one of the typical sensations you could experience is widespread inflammation. For some people, a viral infection in the mouth could also come up in the form of ulcers, irritations and allergies.
3) COVID tongue
Patients experience a burning sensation and inflammation on the surface of the tongue.
4) Changes to the colour/ sensation of the tongue
Unlike a normal, healthy pink tongue, unusual redness, white patches, or dark-coloured tongue could be witnessed when the virus strikes.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I DID NOT GET MY SECOND DOSE OF COVID VACCINE ON TIME ?
In the Pfizer-BioNTech clinical trials, participants received their shots 21 days apart; Moderna participants received theirs 28 days apart. When the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted these vaccines emergency use authorization, it did so prescribing those exact intervals for each, since that’s what they had data for.
The FDA has since acknowledged that spacing doses a little farther apart may not hurt. And on Jan. 21, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it’s okay to receive a second vaccine dose as many as four days early, or 42 days after the first dose. Neither agency has much data on what extra time between shots does to the vaccines’ effectiveness, but the CDC considers it a “permissible risk.” What is important is that both doses come from the same manufacturer.
HOW TO TREAT VIRAL FEVER AT HOME
1) Drink fluids
A viral fever makes your body much warmer than usual. This causes your body to sweat in an effort to cool down. But this leads to fluid loss, which can cause dehydration.
Try to drink as much as you can when you have a viral fever to replenish lost fluids. It doesn’t have to be just water, either. Any of the following can provide hydration:
juice
sports drinks
broths
soups
decaffeinated tea
2) Get plenty of rest
A viral fever is a sign that your body is working hard to fight off an infection. Cut yourself some slack by resting as much as possible. Even if you can’t spend the day in bed, try to avoid as much physical activity as possible. Aim for eight to nine hours or more of sleep per night. During the day, take it easy.
It’s also best to put your exercise routine on a temporary hold. Exerting yourself can further raise your temperature
3) Stay cool
You can help cool down your body by surrounding it with cooler temperatures. Make sure you don’t overdo it. If you start to shiver, stop immediately. Shivering can cause your fever to rise.
Things you can do to safely cool off include the following:
Sit in a bath of lukewarm water, which will feel cool when you have a fever. (Cold water will actually cause your body to warm up instead of cool down.)
Wear light pajamas or clothing.
Try to avoid using too many extra blankets when you have chills.
Drink plenty of cool or room-temperature water.
Use a fan to keep air circulating.
COVID-19 strain: As cases increase, here are new symptoms you should know !!!!!
Scientists suspect that the new coronavirus strains can attack the body in a different manner and bring forth a new host of symptoms. The experts in the United Kingdom (UK) reported that these newer strains can cause weakness in the patients apart from just a sore throat. The body can feel tired and lethargic as it tries to fight off the coronavirus infection.
According to reports, the new COVID-19 symptoms that have been identified are muscle aches and joint pain, headache, skin rash, sore throat, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, and even discolouration of fingers or toes.

Can vitamin C and zinc help you fight off Covid-19?
No, not even at high doses, according to the first randomized clinical trial to test the two supplements under medical supervision.
Despite the popular use of vitamin C and zinc to fight off or lessen the severity of viral colds and flu, the new study, published in JAMA Network Open, found the two supplements were of no benefit to people isolating at home with Covid-19.

HOW CO- WIN APP WILL LET U SELF REGISTER FOR COVID VACCINATION !!
With the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) granting a restricted emergency use authorisation to two COVID-19 vaccines – Serum Institute of India (SII)'s Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin – the focus has shifted to the mass vaccination drive against the novel coronavirus infection.
The Centre is hoping to vaccinate 25-30 crore people by July, with priority being given to healthcare and frontline workers. This is likely to be followed by senior citizens and individuals with comorbidities. Thus, vaccination of the remaining general population is still some time away.
However, when the time comes, citizens will be able to self-register on the purpose-built Co-WIN application. The platform has been created by the government to help coordinate the massive inoculation process. It will also help health authorities monitoring of coronavirus vaccines in real-time. It is to be noted that the application has not been deployed for use by citizens and the modalities of the process may change.
New Covid-19 variant does not cause illness more severe than others - study
A British variant of Covid-19 does not appear to cause more severe illness than other variants, according to a matched study.
"Preliminary results from the cohort study found no statistically significant difference in hospitalisation and 28-day case fatality between cases with the variant and wild-type comparator cases," the study said.
Six UK returnees have tested positive for the new coronavirus strain that spreads at a much faster pace. As per a government statement, a total of 6 samples of 6 UK returnees have been found to be positive with the new UK variant genome.
Three 3 samples in NIMHANS of Bengaluru, 2 in CCMB, Hyderabad and 1 in NIV, Pune tested positive for the new variant of coronavirus.
New Coronavirus Strain: VUI-202012/0 identified in Britain.
A report has also surfaced from a research done in an American University that in extreme cold weather the coronovirus remains viable for a longer time on surface. So chances of infection of coronovirus from fomites increases in cold weather.
EFFECT OF CALCIUM DEFICIENCY ON DENTAL HEALTH !!!!
When the levels of calcium in the body diminish, the body uses calcium from the teeth leading to tooth decay or tooth loss.
One of the main diseases that comes out of a long-term calcium deficiency is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis does not just affect your bones. It can also affect your teeth, as it can cause the jaw bone to weaken. Your jaw bone is the anchor for your teeth, so if it becomes damaged or weak; it is more likely your teeth will loosen and possibly fall out.
Along with osteoporosis, a deficient level of calcium can increase your risk of periodontal, or gum disease. If you start noticing an increase in cavities or chipped teeth, it is time reach out to a dentist.
