Yay! Our beloved dobedobedo is back! We have not one but three summer camp options to choose from! See you at the camp!
Thank you Diwija didi for all these months of fun and play! 😊❤️
Diwija is an unschooler who loves working with children. She volunteered with us from January of this year. When asked what did you enjoy doing most with didi, here are the responses we got!
Playing hangman!
Sitting in her lap!
Playing lock and key!
Math operations!
Park time!
Knowing numbers does not mean reciting from 1 to 100. Many a times children can recite 1 to 100, but they don't necessarily understand the quantities and the symbols represented by the numbers they are reciting.
'1' or '१' is a symbol
one or एक is the name of the symbol
and the quantity one (one 🍎 or one 🥭 or one 🚗) is the number of objects signified by the symbol 1 and name one.
For a child to know a number, he or she must know the quantity, name and symbol associated with that number.
The Montessori pedagogy has a rich library of Math materials. Chains and arrows (seen in the image) are one of them. We use chains and arrows for helping the child understand logical progression of numbers, linear and skip counting, for associating symbols with quantities, for getting over the confusion between mirror numbers (36 and 63), among others!
Planets we are planets we move around the sun! 🌍🪐☀️
Learning opportunities! We caught sight of this stone and brick construction on our way back home. The kakas were kind enough to let children observe up close and then patiently answer their questions. 😊
Learning numbers from 1 to ... million!
One day, our Monali Lodha Masi was speaking with a Maths educator about how we are learning. The educator asked her whether we know the significance of 1 vs 10 vs 100 vs 1000, or we were just learning the names and symbols. We work with concrete materials and the unit cube is significantly smaller and lighter than the thousand cube. Also the thousand chain is way longer than the ten bar or the hundred chain. So we do have a perspective. But this got her thinking!
So when we went on from 1,000 to 1,000,000, Masi gave us this exercise. When we say a number, say 1, we also associate it with the real world - I have one nose. The distance between park and school is 1km. 10? I have ten toes. Or the distance between my home and school is 10km. 100? The distance between Nashik and Malegaon is 100km.. and so on..
Can you come up with real life associations for numbers 1000, 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000? Get set go!
One hand in plaster? Never mind.
The love for and will to work is higher than the inconvenience of the plastered hand.
Mint anyone?
The refreshing aroma of mint has been our current favourite. Children - small and old, boys and girls, everyone finds their calm when they do this work. And what do we do with all the plucked mint? Take it home, of course! 🍃
It is happening! We have it for two more days if you missed today.
I have been attending this exhibition for two years now, and everytime, the meaning strikes me differently. I got interested in J. Krishnamurti and his educational philosophy, Krishnamurti Foundation schools in India and abroad.. However with time, I have realised it is so much more - it is relevant to every aspect of our life - family, work, relationships, emotions and more. I have spent hours and hours at the exhibition and am glad that I now get to spend even more time this year! And I am also glad that my children share my excitement for this exhibition. They are not just volunteering on a weekend during their time off from school, but also making sure their parents attend this along with them!
Do make time for it.
Exhibition venue: Radiance Foundation
Time: 10am to 12:30pm, 5pm to 7:30pm on 6th and 7th January
We are studying types of leaf arrangements and strengthening our understanding by drawing what we've observed. Can you name the leaf arrangements you see here?
Studying different types of leaf arrangements helps develop children's observation skills and encourages an early interest in nature. It fosters a connection with the environment, promotes scientific curiosity, and lays a foundation for understanding plant diversity and adaptation.
Drawing and painting the leaves we found outdoors! Our Masi also sat and painted with us 😊 Swipe left to see her work.
The work of the adult can sometimes serve to inspire the children to bring out their best. However, one must balance adult involvement in the work of the child, giving enough time and space for the child to explore and problem solve independently.
Who doesn't love a game of Tetris? 😊
As tiny hands maneuver the wooden tiles, spatial awareness blossoms. Sorting, stacking, and fitting pieces together ignite problem-solving skills, enhancing cognitive abilities in a playful setting.
Every now and then, even our staff members and parents like to indulge in a game of Tetris with our little ones. Fun guaranteed!

In his book ‘Hind Swaraj’, Gandhiji questioned the purpose of learning. ‘I have learned Geography, Astronomy, Algebra, Geometry, etc. What of that? In what way have I benefitted myself or those around me? Why have I learned these things?’
The issues that Gandhiji raised about learning close to 100 years ago continue to stare us in the face. His questions and radical opinions laid the basis for his experiments with Nai Talim.
What is Nai Talim? It is a philosophy of learning and living. Though it was once described as education through handicrafts, it goes much deeper than that. It is the application of truth and love in every variety of human activity. It questions our notions of progress and success, freedom and happiness, among other things.
Let’s come together, read, discuss and create our own actionable definitions and interpretations of Nai Talim.
Reading of selected passages and discussion to dive deeper into Gandhi-Vinoba’s educational philosophy

Inviting all our parents for this one of its kind workshop. Some of you might remember we had hosted Ranjana Tai's session during the pandemic. This is another opportunity for you to learn more about natural learning in growing years and interact with her in person.
Learning is a biological process and it happens without an effort. An infant acquires language effortlessly. Why then, is learning no longer effortless as we grow up? What is our role as parents in our child's natural learning? How may we re-awaken our own natural learning system?
Come, join us as we discuss this and more, with Ranjana Baji. Ranjana Tai is a part of Existential Knowledge Foundation where she researches on natural learning and the role of parents in natural learning. She has worked extensively with parents and children to connect their real life experiences to their learning at school.
Sunday | 30th April | 2:30 to 4:30pm | Kusumagraj Smarak, Nashik
The Indian national flag stands for strength and valour, truth and peace, growth and constant movement. In a way it represents what we as a country want for our citizens. On this we set out to determine the values that are important to us at and created our own flags to depict those. Here are some samples of our flags!
Is there a relationship between 1/3rds and 1/9ths? Let's figure it out! Concrete experience with concrete materials trumps formulae and abstract concepts.
We notice children who are the cusp of 6 years sometimes want a bigger challenge to match their need for big work! So we got out our fractions trays for this not-so-little-one-anymore!
Being able to form the names of family members brings so much joy to children! This little one has spelled out her papa's name, phonetically. You see 'u' instead of 'a' - That is because अ is the prominent or key sound of the letter 'u' in English, and that is what is given to the children at first. Indian names use 'a' for the sound अ, and they will learn that eventually..
