It was a very fulfilling and fun filled weekend. We conducted a successful free medical camp on Sunday, 29th May 2022 at village Oze, Nasik. A last minute switched from Degaon, Ratnagiri due to some unforeseen circumstances. We thank people for Oze, Nasik who agreed to let group of strangers conduct a medical camp in their village. Our host family welcomed us with open hearts and made comfortable. We were treated as family members.
Oze village is ~200Km from Navi Mumbai. We could not find an easier route due to last minute travel plans. This ended up being an 8-hour epic journey with 2 trains, 2 share taxis, and 2 state buses in 35 C degree weather. Oze is a village with population of less than 1500 and is a farming community. Even though its less than 50Km from nearby city of Nashik, it was a world away from hustle and bustle of the city. Only traffic we saw was the tractors and bullock carts!
On the day of the camp, we were not sure how our efforts will be received and how many people we will be able to see. Our team had pharmacists, engineer, nurse, and a doctor driven by a common cause of bringing quality care to remote locations. Being allowed to use the village temple was a sign of acceptance and respect. That's the reason you will see everyone without the footwear including us.
People lined up starting at 8 am, which was a surprise. I am sure this has a lot to do the efforts of villagers and volunteers. We started at 9 am, from registration to checking vitals and then to me, the doctor. We must have seen close to 100 people till 3pm without a break. From 6 y/o kid to 95 y/o great great grand mother, we served and treated everyone.
During these 6 hours, I was a doctor, an adviser, a guide, a trusted elder, and a counselor. I was diagnosing and treating people with diabetes, high blood pressure, next moment I was a pediatrician going through a thick file of medical records of a 9 y/o girl with cerebral palsy and seizures. I was a dentist telling kids to brush twice a day, I was an orthopedic doctor advising on knee and back pain. I was a trusted source for women of all ages who wanted to discuss menstrual problems, breast lump, stress of work and relationships.
We were all tired after 15 hours of travel in 2 days but happy that we again made a difference. We will continue to serve the underserved area. We want to do more, but we need more volunteers who are passionate about helping a fellow human being and trying to spread kindness in this world.

People of Oze were kind and accommodating. We will return for another camp in the future.

I practice medicine ethically and honestly. This means doing what is right for my patients every single time. I try to make a difference one patient at a time now. But not everyone can afford my consultation fees or can come to my clinic in Navi Mumbai. So once a month I travel to rural or underserved areas with group of dedicated volunteers to serve these communities.
On May 29th 2022, we will be in Degaon, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. Its a small village where we will be conducting a free health camp. Degaon residents live in medically underserved area, that means a long travel for even basic medical needs. We will all be working hard all day no matter what role you are assigned in the camp. We will do the best we can together for people of Degaon and neighboring villages. We do not carry fancy equipment or charge anyone a single penny, and we still manage to make a difference. I understand this does not answer long term need of affordable and quality healthcare but its a step in right direction.

Every camp, we focus on patient education. We spend time to educated patients about their body, their illness and their medications. I believe an informed patient would be able to navigate the complex and expensive Indian Healthcare System much better by asking all the right questions. Patient educations has always been my way of making a difference. I have made efforts every single time to make sure my patient and their loved ones never left the clinic or hospital with just the prescription but with a clear understanding about their medical problems. I understand a single day health camp is not going to make a sea of change but not doing anything is not an option either. I have a strong belief that Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right.

We are always in search of volunteers for camps and initiatives like these. So, next time you want to do something different, something really fulfilling, please think about volunteering at a Medical camp with us. Your time and efforts will be well worth it. You will see the side of India most of you do not know exist, an humbling experience. You will meet people from different background, you will interact with people which you may not otherwise. We treat everyone with respect and kindness. You will see the anxiety, sorrows and pain of patients and you will always experience their smile in the end. Listening to patient's hardship can be emotionally taxing but we take solace in making sure they are put on path to recovery with right advise.

Please spread the word, we need volunteers for future health camps whether you are in the medical profession or not. Simply spreading the message would also be benevolence - an act of kindness. Your help will be kindly appreciated.

This was the first step towards understanding and fulfilling the need of underserved community in Western India. I am fortunate to have met few like minded people like Pallavi. L Patil and Sharmila Sutar. We share a common goal of providing quality healthcare to underserved community. We are well on our journey by successfully implementing a Free Health Camp focused on Diabetes and High blood pressure.
This community is situated at the outskirts of Mumbai Metropolis but lacks dependable and trustworthy healthcare resources including doctors and hospitals. Our goal was to simply understand the community's healthcare needs by listening to them. We provided free Sugar & Blood pressure check up.
As we listened carefully to everyone who participated, it was clear the area lacks a trustworthy medical facility and provider. People are travelling far and wide to access care, even if it means it may take hours to get to hospital or clinic. We focused on healthcare literacy of this community. We were able to find many misconceptions about diseases, medications, treatment modalities and healthcare facilities. This was evident in inadequate treatment regimes, poor sugar and BP controls and many complications like strokes and amputations. We spent significant time is helping everyone understand the basic knowledge about diabetes and high blood pressure, different treatment modalities and how to take care of themselves in the home.
Our intervention may have been a small step but I believe its impact will be greater. A patient empowered with correct information will be better able to navigate the healthcare system. We are planning monthly health camps in surrounding areas to keep focusing on helping patients understand their health better and guiding them in the right directions.

Every patient gets dedicated time to talk to the doctor during every visit. This helps patient explain their symptoms which aids the doctor to make a better treatment plan. Dedicated time for each clinic visit means you will have all your health questions answered.

These fees include tests done in clinic, e.g. ECG for heart patient, Lung Function test for Asthma/COPD patient, Sugar check for diabetic patient.

As a patient, you have right choose to any pharmacy for medications or laboratory for additional testing.
